Hello Sir, is there any way to put some symbols into the leather armor after it is dyed? for example, a tree on the chest or any symbol in the arms protectors?
Got lots of Fiebings dyes and never once got a dauber included. I usually use a sponge applicator anyway 😊 Been experimenting with fountain pen ink as I have lots and in some amazing colors including shimmer inks.
Thanks for the tip on diluting alcohol dyes with ISO! I've only ever used Eco-Flo from my local craft store. Where do you purchase the larger alcohol based dyes?
+turbomonkeyexpress Tandy leather is where I get my dyes and other supplies, I like to buy my leather in person so I have to drive 40 miles to the nearest store. You can order online, there is a link in the info section above. Hobby stores, shoe repair shops and even Wal mart in the shoe dept sell the Fiebings in the 4 oz bottles, remember not to dilute the black only the colors.
First off thank you soo much for all of your videos. They have helped me immensely with some of my projects. do you have any suggestions on where to get 13-15oz leather? Tandy doesn't have any listed and the prices I'm seeing seem to high. also what are your thoughts on wax hardening/ finishing?
Hello! So if I were to paint a metallic (silver) border on the face of the leather, would the finishing seal shine compete with the metallic sheen or even dull it? Or would the paint still shimmer through the seal? Thanks!
Hey, thanks for subbing. I dye the entire piece of armor then before I seal it I paint on several coats of watered down metallic paint until it covers the dye underneath. Apply your sealer to the whole piece, let it cure for a while and then paint on a final coat of metallic not watered down. There are varied degrees of coating I use to get different effects but this is my typical process of application. I hope this helps and have fun with your project.
what kind of armor specifically are you trying to make? also try looking up metal patterns, they work just as well with leather. try this site out. www.armourarchive.org/patterns/
so. is 13-15 oz leather able to be formed in this way. and will it keep its shape for heavy combat? I'm apart of the sca and they have very strict regulations on armor. also is there a way to reharden if it looses it's shape?
Hey, thanks for subbing. Yes you can wet form 13 to 15 oz leather. It does not bend easily but with some extra elbow grease and pressure you can shape it into a helmet, breastplate, bracers whatever. If you don't seal the back of the leather you can soak it and reform it to your desired shape.

HI Gratings from Berlin Germany. I have watched all your videos and i must say: The Quality That You Have For Getting The Point Across Is SUPERB! Thank You so much. ps could you show us how do you paint metallic color on your work..maybe with the spray ''bottle'' you showed on your video? and ThanKs Again for sharing your knowledge
+Szymon Wańda Thanks for subscribing. I have tried the cuir bouilli on veg and chrome tanned leather for comparison purposes. For all the extra trouble and supplies, I don't believe it was any harder than water hardened leather. Historically, I dont think it was used except for waterproofing
In your video you said that you didn't much like the two dies from Tandy, but you didn't say what it was about them that you didn't like. What was it about them that you didn't like, and what is it that you like better about the other kind?
Yes, I would recommend that and use a 1 to 1 ratio for a brown that isn't so dark and penetrating. Don't go over one area too much and apply it with a sheepskin piece loaded up and I like brush it on on from top to bottom slightly overlapping each stroke until you cover the piece.
Thanks! This was very helpful for my cosplay of a Half-elf bard from D&D.
Excellent video, please make more
Lots of great info, thanks!

Is it possible to make your own dyes like coffee or something for the dark colors? Dyes are pretty expensive.

is there any disadvantage to not dying the back of the leather also?
I only dye the back if it will be showing. If you don't seal the dye well it will bleed onto to your skin or clothes.

Great Video! Thank you!

would you recommend mixing alcohol with medium and dark brown dyes? Good video btw!
