  • Acrylic stucco over retaining wall.
    Stucco over a retaining wall.

Hello, in this video, we are going over an old tired, beat-up, stained cementitious color coat finish applied over a retaining wall.
We are pressure washing with at least 3,500 PSI to remove all the dust, dirt, and grime.
Note: After the wall is immaculate, “this means absolutely, No dust, dirt, grime or moss.”
Then it’s time to roll or brush on the stucco acrylic primer with your choice of acrylic stucco primer.
After the wall or home is primed, you are ready to apply the stucco acrylic finish coat.
We used Stucco-Flex, in this video, or as they call themselves, Stuc-O-Flex.
Another quality stucco is Dry-Vit and or BMI.
What is an Acrylic color finish that’s used for resurfacing stucco walls?
Good question. It’s like rubber mixed with sand and color pigments.
Remember that acrylic stucco sticks to everything, so you must cover the ground well; however, no stucco acrylic stucco will adhere to a dusty surface, at least not forever. I mention this often as I get many calls saying that Kirk, the plastering company that applied my stucco finish less than a year ago, is now coming off help.
There is much prep work involved in acrylic refinishing over stucco walls. Allow this video to be your guild.
This video demonstrates and explains how to apply acrylic stucco by hand. These are maintenance-free colored finishes over an existing stuccoed retaining wall.
Not only does this application require extreme troweling on pressure, but as I was floating, I had to push as hard as I could to fill all the voids with this glue-like acrylic because the existing finish was a heavy dash finish.
At the end of this video, my own wrist and forearms were tight as a drum and a bit tired, which is indeed rare.
My daughter Madeline had to use both hands towards the end of this wall as the strength needed was a bit too much. She has been teaching English in Spain for the last year and lost some wrist strength.
Use it or lose it, we used to have fun here, plus the owner was a nice fella.

Sponge floats make it look wavy. Plastic floats and a trial for a scraper is best method in my opinion. And I learned how to float pretty damn good in under a year

      @StuccoPlastering  2 роки тому +3

Howdy, my friend, under a year, you learned all this!
I say cool beans to you, Daddieo.
I also say more power to you, but the actual fact is, all can and should do as they wish.
I do not demonstrate what we do to say, do as I do, but show how we do it. For example, there are many ways to skin a cat.
My 40 years as an expert, not because of the years in, but the passion or love of what I do, is why I do things the way I do.
Thus don't do as I say, but do as you wish.

i'm rendering a smooth brick wall and sometimes at the bottom of the area i have rendered big blobs of render will drip down and come off the wall.
I thought it was too much water in the mix but even when i try a really stiff mix it can still happen, any advise why this is happening and how to avoid it would be greatly appreciated thanks Kirk

Great video guys! Learning so much!
Question: if I want to redo my house that has currently a sand float finish stucco into a smooth finish (santa Barbara, etc), can I diamond grind/etch off the float finish and apply weldcrete and apply the new smooth finish? Or just go over the existing finish like u did in this video with the new finish? Is sandblasting the preferred method? Thx guys!

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  6 років тому +3

Howdy Dan Dude, sand blasting is no longer allowed in my area for at least the last 20 years, this is O.K.with me as I prefer the water blast myself.
If your going to change a heavy finish to smooth, you will need to apply two coats, depending on the existing finish, I sometimes will spread the first finish with a heavier sand such as 20/30, (medium) or even 16/20, (heavy) to fill in depths, then apply a finish coat with smooth stucco which is basically (30/30,) "very fine sand"

Evening Larry, no, I learned when I answered an ad for a hod carrier paying 5 dollars an hour for this position, I was about 18.
After the first week i thought wow, I'm getting paid to work out, can't beat that!
Hod carrying got boring as I was young strong and too fast for the plasterers, so I plastered too.
I'd sound conceited if I said I plastered faster and better than most journeymen plasterers in as little as two weeks, but i'd be a liar if I said I didn't.
The rest you see, well a tiny bit anyways as my son Jason started videoing a few of our projects in the last 5 years.

This is just a guess, as it's not something I have done before that makes perfect sense. The idea is to not remove the finish or texture.🍾

hey Kirk what is the average life for "the stucco" wall and is there a way to keep it looking good. oh and does weather and the quality of material play a part? thank you

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  7 років тому +1

Howdy Jnixongo, the average life of a stucco wall is thousands of years depending on the render used.
The pyramids, castles, roman churches and the great wall of china just to name a few are still standing today more than 5,000 years later, these great structures were created from lime based mortars.
As far as the dirt going up and over the side of the wall which happened in this case, note the owner dug a great trench that should not allow the water to drain into the french drain system and not over for many years.
When I originally looked at this retaining wall the level of the dirt was even to the top of the wall.
If this material or a cementitious finish does get dirty, use of a garden hose can wash it off if done properly.
Lastly Acrylic's are not created equal, there are some that I would not use if they were given to me, but I stay away from crappy products we show and use the quality products.
      Best wishes,
      kirk giordano Rendering

Good morning Edgar dude, excellent question. That means there air traps under the finish. In the future, then pressure was the walls very well, then apply whatever primer the acrylic stucco recommends. This should stop that bubbling or small holes from happening.

Good morning Victor Vu dude. When you say wash, you are referring to pressure washing to remove all dust, dirt, and grime, then yes, your ready to apply any acrylic. It's advisable to first apply the primer that is sold with all acrylics.
If your referring to the team, "a Wash," or "a lime wash," with stucco, this is a term from a different era or time and place and has nothing to do with what we're doing in this video.

Howdy Dawn Patrol, not really, as the grout lines would crack like an egg plus the depth needed would not hold it own weight, anything more that 1/8 of an inch would slide plus a depth of say all the way up to 1/4 inch would severely checker crack.
You could however skim coat the brick first with stucco to get an even surface then apply an acrylic finish.

Hi Kirk and family.I have recently started watching your videos and wow!! Very explanatory and what you say makes complete sense. We live in Scotland in the UK and we are building a house. We have 2 fireplaces that we are going to be installing log burning stoves in and the fireplace insides are lined with fire resistant plasterboard (gyproc). I know you're a busy guy but I wondered how you would recommend finishing the insides as a log burner gives off a lot of heat and I'm worried it could crack as we just want a paintable finish.I have had a look to see if you cover anything like that in your videos but cant find anything. It doesn't look as if you have much call for a log burner where you live :)You would probably see the fireplaces in some of my videos or I could send a photo.Any help would be great but I appreciate you're a busy man. Thanks Ian

Sand and cement can work great with a floated / sponged finish can add fire clay and or lime as some think lime is better to resist the heat but no matter what it can still always crack

I’ve seen such mold in more than a few houses in Israel. Mainly in joint areas after stormy weather .
I think. At times. The reason is more simple for that as We had some surprisingly big storm in recent years that revealed , sooner rather than later, the poor work standard of applying this material in here.
Sadly , in Israel, there is yet to be a proper training standard as a guide rule for stucco and such guys.
Simply put. It’s like you said. You need to be a real pro working with that stuff. And sadly we can’t afford flying your ginger squad of epic ness off shore .. yet.
I could just, in a case like that, do a regular stucco over cinder blocks and then , after a few weeks use one of these new flexible paints instead . Right?

Howdy Adr1, my daughter Madeline has been in Spain teaching English for about a year and fly's back this Wednesday (3 days from now) for another year, she has a degree in Marine BIology and has taken on part time work waiting for an opening for her chosen profession, she plasters on the side, since she lost some wrist strength due to a year off at the end of this video she had to use both hands as the strength needed was a bit too much, heck I even had problems with spreading and floating this acrylic render as we had to push each trowle full hard to embed, I wishes we could have filmed how she used the trowel as I found it ingenious.
I will say this about spreading this course acrylic sand render over a dash finish, I felt my my own wrist and forearm were about to pop, as what we did appears easy however the pressure needed to spread this acrylic was incredible. Use it or lose it.
We will be doing a family video tomorrow as a goodby to my baby for yet another year, I miss her already.
