FYI, if you have a tex-coat and want to match it.
You must look at the sand in your text coat and match it.
Or it could be Perlight sold in the garden areas of hardware stores, as it is lighter than sand.
Perlite is made from mined volcanic glass and is used in tex-coating and acrylic paint. I used a La Habra color coat in this video, or you can shoot any Portland stucco.
What’s that? Don’t have a hopper or a dash brush?
I have used a whisk broom, a paintbrush, and even a tall kitchen house broom to apply a dash finish. We must learn to improvise when plastering.
BTW, you can purchase a hand Hopper or a dash brush at Home Depot or Lowes and all plastering years, such as Westside Building Materials.
Need to find a plastering yard in your area.
No problem, Google, plastering yards in my area.
• Stucco knockdown dash ... Cement plaster knockdown dash finish.
• Pebble dash stucco fin... Plastering a pebble Dash finish for a stucco turret.
• Stucco dash brush for ... Stucco Dash brush for cement wall textures.
thanks! i need to do this today
Howdy Joe, you can depend on us for accurate information. 🥳
Hey Mike, this is just regular Portland stucco mixed with sand. You can mix 3 to 1 or more. Meaning for every 100 pounds of Portland you add 300 pounds of sand. I usually do this mix, but not always. Depends on what I am trying to achieve.
Best wishes,

I enjoy so much your videos. Very educational, instructional and fun. I have a house in Florida which seems to have Tex Coat because even the soffit vents and the door frame has some of this stuff on. Anyways, it’s peeling like hell and I cannot find a company that will match what I already have. Any advice? Don’t know if this is a job I can take on myself.
Good morning, indeed I do have advice with a narrative video of how to. You’re watching it. Cheers
what air compressor are you using? Like what are the specs of the compressor? Is it oil based or not?
Morning bluekeet, man, I have so many it's hard to keep track, Emglows, Dewalts and so on,Yes, they do require oil. Some new one's don't I have tried these and found them worthless as they break in less than 40 hours use.
That's not important, whichever one you use, your hand hopper will have an air valve, most compressors for contractors kicks out 120 pounds, when the air goes down to about 80 pounds it should kick back on to bring this level again back to 120 pounds, Again not important.
Your Hand hoppers have a valve that lets you control the amount of air you want to use, too much air the stucco or plaster hits the wall and bounces off all over you, too little it simple pours out the hopper like water onto your shoes.
A persons figures out how much pressure you need depending on what material your shooting.
In other words you'll have to cross that bridge when you get there.

i love this type of finish but here in australia people only like one finish which is a sponge very smooth
thanks Mr Kirk, great work! thanks for all your videos
What mix ratio and additives do you use for this finish?
I saw you commented that this is not a color coat, just a dash coat. Is a dash coat the same as a skim coat with stucco mix? So many terminologies! Thank you.
Anybody knows what type of cement he is using?
It's portland cement plaster, like quikrete or sakrete sold at HD.🕵🏼
Would you be able to shoot a la habra sand finish through a hopper if you wet it down enough?
Hi Noah Kelchner, yes, all three la Habra color coating finishes blow out well through these hand hoppers, from the fine, medium to the coarse sand.
The portland cement plaster I am shooting through this hopper sometimes has rocks, leaves cat shit, heavy or large grains of sand and or dried stucco clumps (this stuff is in the sand in the back of my truck) all of which clogs the orifice.
Best wishes

kirk what is the name of the texture that looks like if little grains of sand are scattered on a semi smooth wall
Howdy frank, could be, as it is just sand,

Kirk,I have an existing fine sand finish block house in Florida. The question is do I have to do a scratch coat before TEX spraying or can I just do weld crete over the cleaned surface and then tex spray? There are some holes and cracks that need taped also. Thanks,John
Good Morning John, if your bolk wall is not painted you can pressure wash well and shoot your finish on directly with no bonding agent, I as a rule will apply a bonding agent also.
Remember your wall has to be clean enough to eat off, as nothing adheres to a dusty surface.
Also fix any holes first as a dsh is a finish coat it will not hide any defects in the wall.

Where did you buy that hand hopper set. I live in Ont and i would really like one. Can you spray a traditional 3:1 portland sand mix through that hopper. Make foundations a lot faster than my typical trowel. Great work
Evening Matthew, some of them are used for that, they have orifice's that you change to adapt to whatever you are spraying.
In the description of all our videos, we have a link on Amazon that shows all the tools we use at the best possible price, Including these air hand hoppers.

Hey Kirk, like the home in this video, certain parts of my home built in the 70s have about 1/8" of tex coat applied directly onto exterior plywood, but every source says to never spray directly onto wood as it will rot. How do I go about repairing a large exterior hole in this case? Spread thin finish coat of ready-mix stucco directly onto plywood or add paper, wire, then do the 2-3 coat system? Any help is greatly appreciated, not to mention the great catalog you've provided here for everyone to learn. Cheers! 🤙🏼
Howdy Javier, if it were me, I'd add some sand to a good primer and either blow it on or throw it on.
Especially if it's a patch about 5 feet by 10 feet.
This way, you're still preserving the waterproofness of the plywood.
You have to look at the sand that's in your text coat and match it.
Or it could be Perlight sold in the garden areas of hardware stores, as it's much lighter than sand.
Perlite is made from mined volcanic glass and is used in tex-coating along with acrylic paint.
FYI, You only paper and attach stucco netting if you're going to re-stucco that whole wall or the whole house.😉
@@StuccoPlastering Perfect. That sounds like the way to go & makes a lot more sense. I was going crazy trying to figure out how they managed to get away with such a thin, single coat of "stucco" directly on wood without the entire wall rotting over the years. Perlite will mimic the surrounding texture perfectly. Now on to get my hands dirty on this project. Thank you again Mr. Kirk, your wisdom is greatly appreciated 📝👍🏼
Is there a minimum psi requirement for spraying stucco?
Howdy Breant, I usually go by the hand fitting on the guns, if it won't spray the stucco, I allow more air, if more air causes the stucco to hit the wall with too much force that it bounces off while making a huge mess, I cut some of the pressure until I find what I am after.
Spraying stucco take's a variety of different pressures such as is your stucco mixed tight or hard to is it mixed watery or runny, don't go by gage but instead by eye and your hand on the pressure knob.
Cheers,
kirk giordano plastering
Hello again Kirk. What type of hopper are you using? I bought a texture hopper which looks similar to yours from HD for about $70. I loaded it with 3:1 Silica Silver Sand#20/Plastic Cement and nothing would spray out. I even made it soupy with no luck. Should I buy a stucco specific Hopper or try the lahabra finish coat with the same hopper, since all I'm doing is adding texture? Also my compressor is 8gallons 6SCFM. Thanks again for all of your wisdom!
Evening Ronnie, most of these hoppers sell from 70 dollars to 170 dollars all have orifice's that you can change so that lite to heavy sand will blow through, adjust your hole in the front, or the part that allows the cement stucco to blow out.

Hey Guys,
Your videos are really useful, I've learned a lot. I'm wondering if I could add 1/2 part lime and color to your mix and have that be the final coat?
Would I have to add water reducer or a superplasticizer to be able to get the mix to flow in the hopper without exceeding the maximum water to cement ratio?
Morning WL Huyler, there are hundred of different ways and material a person can blow through a han hopper.
I usually shoot or blow on the cementitious bags or acrylics finishes from buckets.
But in this video I am watering down the cement plaster.
All these applications create big messes, but with the pre bagged sand or in the buckets you eliminate the guesswork.
As far as pressure I cross that bridge when I get to it, as again there are hundreds of materials, you may need to adjust the compressor and or the hand hopper air.
Thanks for watching and have a wonderful New Year!
kirk giordano’s DIY plastering tip
Wow quick response!
About the water volume, When I add enough water to make the mix soupy enough to be sprayed with a hopper, will efflorescence become an issue?
Another thing, none of the suppliers here carry water reducer so I'm thinking about using concrete bonder in the mix to act as a reducer. I couldn't find any info on this so it's probably a bad idea, What do you think?
Hey WL Huyler, efflorescence is only usually, caused by salt in the sand.
30 years ago I went to the beach for a couple of buckets as I was working across the street,
I had some efflorescences in my finished work as a result, I am not aware of any of my past jobs That this has occurred on.
That's how we learn by our mistake, or the smart way like you, by asking.
A bonding agent into stucco mixer or hopper is like, Tits On A Boar, a complete waste of time, yes, some sections will adhere for awhile while other area's will come loose in less than a year no matter how much is used.
Apply the bonding agent to the wall, yes it's more work but will save the time of redoing it the proper way in the future,
You can do it!
Cheers and have a fantastic New Year, Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering techniques
Oh I plan to do as you recommend. I'm using Lanco CB-610 50% solution on the whole building (putting a couple extra coats on all of the patch work). The Bonder in the mix is in an effort to make the mix flow without using too much water.
I'm in Nassau, Bahamas and the ground water is higher in salt than normal. I guess instead of Bonder I could use a mix of ground water & bottled water to cut down on salt.
Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips
Hi Kirk, still working on the same project. Since we communicated my foreman convinced me that it would be better to trowel on a coat with a mix of 1:1/2:4. He didn't charge me any extra so I said ok. He floated the coat but left it a bit rough because he said that I'd be tempted to just paint it.
The finish I'm using will be white cement, lime & sand with a little Plastol 5000 and a bit of liquid cement colorant. I'm trying to decide between 1:1:6 and 1:2:9, I understand that the 1:2:9 is susceptible to fading so if I go that rout I'd likely leave out the colorant and stick with a white cement finish.
My questions are:
1. How long should we leave it before we spray on the finish
2. Should we put on another layer of bonder
3. I would prefer to add a little color, if I go with the 1:2:9 and we add just enough color to create an off white or maybe a light grey, Will it fade?
👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿
Thank you
Thanks for the video

Hi, is it possible to do the same on a shipping container side?
I'm a stucco contractor if say you can paint prime for acrylic stucco and then spray texture with acrylic stucco,
Greetings Ahmed, sure it's possible, you would first have to pressure wash very well, apply a bonding agent such as Weld Crete, then stucco away.😉

Hey Kirk what kind of cement i need to use the hopper? Because i think my house have the same texture wich you apply at this videos and my wall are of eifes stucco??
Answer me Kirk i saw all your videos !!
Heyy? xxx
You can use,
Gray Concentrate,
"western 1 Kote"
It's comes with fiber, just mix it with mortar sand but real fine, (and water) 24 shovels with one bag of 80 Lb
If your going onto eifs spray acrylic stucco on top ,
Do not spray cement onto eifs use acrylic stucco or primus, polymer modified cement,
Mr. Krick... do I have to use mesh on a blocks before sprying the c ment or if I start with light coat then another until it's filled in will give a good result ? thanks for your answer.
Evening Asmar, most cinder or cement blocks are porous, so they dont benefit at all by mesh, in fact, this will mess up your mechanical bond.
TIP, moist or wet the blocks before you apply stucco to them, not soaking wet but moist this way the cement really adheres well.

Kirk, I was trying to figure out what was on my house and seen this video. showed the video to Parex Rep along with A fist full of chunks from my house. After they looked at your video here and saw what I placed on the counter. Parex reps decided to come to my house for further evaluation. After chipping off some more house texture along with some Parex sample texture sprays the Reps brought along; they came to a definite answer. What was on my house was Perlite ! (Spray on Volcanic Glass) with latex paint from the 80's over the stucco. one of there reps said he used to spray that stuff. Parex Rep, told me to grind it off re-stucco or paint it. I bought me 6 inch grinder, black grind marks all over the house. 3 months off and on work and stucco repair. 2300 sqft house.
Followed some other tips cool tips on your videos high pressure spray clean, etc. oh and some acrylic base for bonding a new normal stucco finish , rep said it would help. next week is stucco finish time. I haven't did a stucco finish myself in years. Can send a photo of what this Perlite stuff looks like close up. it was hard for me to tell, I never seen Perlite before. Your video really helped in comparing this stuff. Parex reps really liked your liked your video work also.
Good evening Steven, thank you,
I would have suggested you pressure wash your house as grinding makes a mess a long way away and is unhealthy.
Anyhow, I have never heard of perlite being sprayed or applied to a home.
Perlite can is often used as an additive for a text-coat system, as it's much lighter than sand and can go through the hand hopper spray gun orifice without settling to the bottom to fast. So to clarify, a company takes their paint and adds perlite and or other aggregates and sprays this as they would paint on one's home. The added perlite gives the home the sandy look which is necessary to cover cracks and other defects that paint alone can't cover.

@@StuccoPlastering thanks for the reply, tried 4000 psi pressure wash it kocked off some material, then I made a 4' scrapper that had very good results, then washed again at 4000 psi, grinded off what was left and pressure washed again twice. I had indrustial PPE suit and mask on it was hot. The perlite texture was sprayed on like you said. After it was all off the stucco was in very good shape for being done in 1950. Found a brass plate under the perlite texture that said " Finished Febuary 1950" Amazing that the Original stucco hardley no cracks at all , and about 2 1/4 inch thick very dense material.
thanks for the mention on the book im going to get it.
I meant the mention on the videos . thanks again for the the advise Kirk and the videos .
Hey Kirk I've been looking though your videos and can't find one of you using a hopper like this for color touch ups and now I'm curious. Would you recommend using one of these hand hoppers / compressor set up to fog coat a decades old stucco home attached to a new addition that used the original color? We were told to use the same color against our better judgement and the new addition is much more vibrant for obvious reasons. Your input would be much appreciated.
I've seen the pump spray used but this is an OLD color coat that is faded and super blochy. Feel like a heavier fog is necessary to match the new addition but the texture is a fine skim coat that almost looks like a dash finish.
Happy New Year A R Diaz, I find it twice as fast to apply by hand unless its a color dash finish.
I then use the hopper to spray on color finishes.
Keep in mind the amount of time to cover every detail is incredible.

Kirk didn't know the answer but I do, so when you mix a 25 pound sack of fog coat it will take 10 gallons of cold potable water obviously you can't pour fog coat of your preference on the top of your two five gallon buckets so that's when your third bucket comes in ,so take water already measured even with the other bucket and pour about half in your empty spare bucket then add your powdered fog coat till empty, you don't even need a drill and paddle a large stir stick works even better,so use stir stick to mix clean cold water from one of your two original buckets until a slurry starts to develop after this you will box all your remaining clean water all together thoroughly, now here's the trade secret (typically I don't reveal trade secrets) if you pour your freshly mixed slurry of fog coat through your screen or filter prior which is necessary, and into your Hudson sprayer immediately after boxing and start fogging lids and walls it will dry blotchy, so the secret is to let the mixed fog coat SLACK its a nice word for wait 30 to 40 minutes before you add your slurry to your Hudson sprayer if not you will be sorry like I say it will look blotchy, so remember to allow yourfog coat Slack up before administering kinda like when I get ready to color coat over a conventional brown I will saturate the wall with my water hose and wait for it to STRIKE meaning once the moisture dissipates while standing there with a full mudboard the wall will let me know when to start slinging mud, by the way the wall waits for no man you wait on it!!!!! Why couldn't my dad and his father become lawyers or doctors instead of plasterers? I hope that explains more for you ,good day and God bless.
