There’s so much more to Slavic folklore than Baba Yaga and Russia. Why do authors always focus only on those? So many gods, creatures, demons, myths and countries to choose from.
If the main character was Polish, Chicago would make sense, since there is a big Polonia there. Maybe some of the monsters migrated with people? That would actually be cool, similar premise to American Gods. But Dimitry is a russian name.
@Belladonna_Q I was lucky enough to get an ARC, and that is the plot. The main characters (one of whom is a folklore creature) are children of Polish immigrants (so is Veronica Roth). It's really interesting so far!
I agree with you 💯 especially when russia is only like 10% Slavic. But the book in discussion seems to focus on Polish folklore (thanks God) so I will happily give it a try. I would love to read more books based on Polish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian or Belarusian experiences instead of supporting imperialism and cultural appropriations committed by russians
It would be nice to see more of straight up Slavic mythology and not just Slavic folklore. I want to see more stories inspired by the Slavic and proto-Slavic people before there were the modern Slavic countries of Russia, Poland, Ukraine, etc. Most people know so little about those deities and that lore. It deserves more attention.
“Can’t spell tea…” was previously published. I loved it so much, it was very cozy and just a slice of life fantasy. ( the second book was also previously published).
@@woodlandlady7011 I found it to be cozy and cute. And had the same kinda of feel as legends and lattes. I would say read it. And if you don’t like it then that’s why there are second hand book stores.
I can't do time loops right now because *Mother of Learning* was too good and has kinda broken the concept for me, otherwise I'd find the Demon Lord one really intriguing. *Can't spell treason without Tea* and *Dragonfruit* sound really good though.
Thank you for putting Dragonfruit on my radar, I'm definitely going to check it out. Also I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons is from Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn, and I'm really intriguied to see read this new whimsical tale.
You Can’t Spell Treason without Tea sounds amazing!! It was published originally in 2022 so I just ordered it, can’t wait to start. Spin of Fate the ARC was fabulous but nothing like the comp titles, if I’m not mistaken a couple people (including the author?) have talked about how the comps are misleading. I forget what the actual comps the author used were. Also Goddess of the River, got the ARC, it wasn’t Kaikeyi levels of phenomenal since I really adored that book but it was great nonetheless, well worth the read and very interested to see how the author structured the book to mimic a river.
agh i have an arc of both how to become the dark lord & die trying & goddess of the river. i tried how to become the dark lord but the dialogue is way too sarcastic & snappy which i love but its like EVERY SINGLE LINE which kinda got old fast for me. ill prilly give it another try but im not sure yet. super excited for most of these!
I loved Can't Spell Treason Without Tea! Rebecca Thorne has become one of my favorite authors. She's been self-published for a while but now Can't Spell Treason Without Tea and it's sequel are going to be traditionally published 😊
Super excited for I’m Afraid You’ve Got Dragons and How To Become The Dark Lord, though they all sound great! Yeah the Chicago underground threw me as well lol
May has a ton of good-looking books! From your list, I'm also interested in "How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying"; that seems really fun & my friend who read an ARC really liked it. I am also looking forward to these other May books: - "Keepers of the Stones and Stars" by Michael Barakiva (YA fantasy, queer kids found family + magic gemstone powers!) - "Beastly Beauty" by Jennifer Donnelly (YA fantasy romance, a genderflipped fairy tale retelling) - "The Garden of Delights" by Amal Singh (Adult fantasy, a magical garden that's rotting) - "Looking for Love in All the Haunted Places" by Claire Kann (Adult paranormal romance, a haunted house falls in love with a paranormal investigator and tries to cockblock her budding romance) - "Dreadful" by Caitlin Rozakis (Adult fantasy, a guy wakes up in the Dark Lord's lair with no memories-only oops turns out *he's* the Dark Lord) - "Evocation" by S.T. Gibson (Adult fantasy poly romance, a psychic has to go back to his ex (and the ex's wife) for help in fending off the devil coming to collect his soul)
I hope you enjoy spin of fate I just watched a really cool author interview and review and it seems so promising! Same for River Goddess because I don’t know if you read Keikeyi but its fantastic
Really looking forward to Goddess of the River also - the wife was a fan of Kaikeyi, put me to read it and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it! Will look forward to what your thoughts are on it.
I won an ARC of the Fireborne Blade. I really enjoyed that novella...I really liked the narrative structure, and the characters were compelling. There was a climactic twist that I didn't see coming. I recommend!
I got so excited to see Wicked Fox pop up lol. It was one of my favorites from last year and I read the sequel this year. I feel like a lot of people don’t talk about Korean literature nearly enough but I’m probably just not following the people who do. I just read Snowglobe by Park Soyoung and really loved it, can’t wait for the sequel 😩 Also finally got Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White from the library yesterday 😩😩😩 I’d been waiting for it since early January, didn’t even realize when the library got it, and immediately put it on hold when I saw it on their online catalog in mid March and person finally returned it (it was due back March 18 but wasn’t returned until April 2) but very excited and very scared at what’s gonna happen lol

Because the writers are generally American with a very loose connection to their antecedents culture.

@kbskibum Was it cosy and cute? Should I read it?

Just ordered
I follow the author on Tiktok. I ordered the Waterstones edition the moment she posted about it
Peter S Beagle wrote The Last Unicorn, which is one my absolute favorite books. I’m so excited for his new book.

Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea was such a wonderful read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it. ❤
Out of all the booktubers I watch your recommendations are always the best. Thank you!!
I picked Dragonfruit! It was on my anticipated releases list for April anyway so very glad it was a pick. 😄
Yea the Chicago underworld part caught me off guard too. It doesn't seem to go with the rest of the synopsis and the cover art.
Well it is autumn going into winter in the southern hemisphere so yay for cosy fantasy.

I was thinking medieval setting... Then you pop off with Chicago. Lol.
The Final Fantasy t-shirt and the background music were already enough to stay and watch the video 😂😂

I live in Chicago, so fantasy set in Chicago always perks my ears. XD Definitely putting The Sword Defiant on hold, too, sounds interesting!
Definitely want to read Can’t spell Treason without Tea! Love your videos ❤
Loove your shirt. I like Veronica Roth's new book quite a bit

Yeah, the Chicago thing threw me for a loop, lol
Has Elliot read any Tad Williams?
Definitely looking forward to How to Become the Dark Lord. I just started the audio for Can't Spell Treason and I'm enjoying it so far!

I have an earc of spin of fate! 🤗

Thank you Elliot for these cosy fantasy releases in May😎
How about Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland May 10 and
Heaven Breaker by Sara Wolf May 21
Just curious if you heard of them.
Great group of books. I pre-ordered Spin of Fate a couple of months ago. I don't remember my reason. I'm glad you think it will be good
these videos make me so happy

Do you know if Book of the Month is available overseas too? specifically the audiobook versions? Because I would be sooo interested in that!
Great Video!
I picked dragonfruit and Abby Jimenez for mine
The Fireborne Blade looks so good - but looking it up, it's only 176 pages?! Is it a novella?
I hate when Book of the Month sponsors you, because I so want it for multiple reason but they are not available in my country :')
Clicked cuz of the FF7 Rebirth T-shirt (I want one soooo bad), stayed for the dragons recommendations ❤
This was a great video. Making my list!
Excuse me ma'am, but I absolutely love your t-shirt!❤
As regard that last book, I find it hard to believe anyone male or female can go up against a dragon by themselves. 😮
That's why it's called fantasy 😊
I just watch these videos with my Kobo Store page open 😂
What is Kobo?
@@maceanglin it's an e-reader, like a Kindle but not affiliated with Amazon 😁
