2:06 When he changes the lyric to, "never seen the Sox go, 15 and 0," he is referring to the Minnesota Twins, who had just prior to this concert won 15 consecutive games. Essentially giving shit to the Twins' rival Chicago White Sox, and their fans, at a show in Chicago. That's classic.
Speaking as a school librarian: this is such an absolute treasure to share with today's students. Whoever cut this all together into one track deserves the kind of credit George Martin got when he put together those two versions of "Strawberry Fields Forever" that were recorded a semi-tone apart. It's such a gift to the world. Thanks so much. I can think of a number of students who love music, and will now know why these guys were so great. I love how this song demonstrates what Bob Mould said about good music in "Spin" magazine thirty years ago: the best music is the kind that comes to you from a bad speaker from a block away. Even now, The Replacements sound great on a bad speaker from a block away, as do Fugazi, Big Black, and all those other bands in Michael Azzerad's "Our Band Could Be Your Life." Again: thanks so much for this. And again....it's a priceless gift.
I only discovered them a couple years ago and they've become my obsession. Wish I knew about them ten years ago so I coulda seen the reunion tour... if only I had a time machine...
Housepainters, It was really hot and humid that day. I remember looking at Paul when he came out on stage and he was wearing long sleeves. Summer in Chicago is as brutal as the winter can be.
I had a word with Paul & Tommy backstage before the Grant Park show - no hint that this was their Final Exit...i taped if off XRT on my little boom box and went back to pick that up and noticed Paul left a couple of cassettes behind: Atlantic R&B comp & R.Stones - Steel Wheels...Ha. Still got 'em if you want, Paul! :)
Fantastic! I have this concert on a bootleg CD but this video (never knew any existed) of their "swan song" really hits home. It's sad, beautiful, and ever so Replacement like. I would've liked Chris Mars to make it to the final end, but the in-fighting apparently took a toll on him.
@Kdny1 I'm pretty sure that was from the 'Shit, Shower & Shave' bootleg (released on Kiss The Stone), which was compiled from various slots when they were opening for Tom Petty. According to Discogs, that particular track was from a set recorded live at Lake Compounce, Bristol Connecticut 31-08-1989.
Ya know, I watched this video and wasn't impressed at all, then later in the day and into the next I couldn't stop thinking about it. So, here I am again.
@misfitsboy123 @misfitsboy123 what book said it was the only time they played it? judging from the archive list of replacements setlists at theskyway (.com), it looks like they played it on almost every tour...
What show was it where WYR had the heavy reverb on Paul's voice and he sang the line "I never seen no mountain- except on a 6 pack of beer" I thought that was the final Grant Park July 4 show- XRK recorded it - Anyone know?
There was a buzz before the show that it was possibly their last. So no one knew quite what to expect. Thing is they came out on FIRE. And there was a palpable "HELL YES!" running through the crowd. But then as quickly as it it started it fizzled. Apropos I suppose but a shame all the same (which is in and of itSELF apropos ....)
Paul's voice so under-rated.
Yes, he’s also a phenomenal songwriter/lyricist
Best band of the 1980s.
Yup, I’m only 24, just discovered them about half a year ago. They’re easily the best band I’ve heard from their time period.
The Suburbs are pretty good too
@@t-man5196 Any time period. Amazed to hear that . And Paul's 14 Songs is pretty good.
@oppothumbs1 what are you amazed to hear? I'm confused
@@t-man5196 just that you wrote they are easily the best band of their time period.
Makes me want to cry. Minnesota rocks........
So sadly .. beautiful.

Amazing catch, did a double-take on that while I was listening
“Say anything!”
“I can live without so much, I could die without a clue.” ❤
Perfect Song, means So Much ❤😊
So footage of their 'last' performance before their 'breakup' does exist! I'd love to see all of it someday.
It's my understanding that Paul is sitting on a lot of unreleased songs and videos. I hope they sometime find the light of day

Coolest librarian ever!📚
Yeps. Big yeps.
God I love the replacements, always will love there songs, shits timeless
The greatest and sadest thing I've ever seen. Greatest band EVER!!!!!!!!! Mats forever.
This is kinda like an unofficial music video, but deserving of being the music video for this song.
jimbo 2346 Arguably deserving, depending on how you look at it.
My favorite American band .... since 1988. I got on-board a bit late, but I’ve caught up.
I only discovered them a couple years ago and they've become my obsession. Wish I knew about them ten years ago so I coulda seen the reunion tour... if only I had a time machine...
@@rdrrrThey were amazing, man.
A mate of mine saw them in Paris in April 1991 during their Farewell tour and as he told me: "it was one of my favorite gigs of that year!"
o my, what i wouldn't do to watch this whole performance. God Bless The Replacements!
"I've never seen the Sox go, 15 and 0..." Love you Paul.
@@ericjensen9091yes but they're in Chicago so I'm guessing it's a white Sox reference
@@RobertTaylor87 Thanks man.
Greatest bands of the 90s80s
Saw them 50% of the time greatest band in history the other 50% wish you d save your money
Hahaha - just like a Van Morrison concert - but a lot more fun when Chris would get his drum kit bashed to fuck .
Excellent editing work on this. Tommy looks relaxed. Paul looks kinda tired.
Housepainters, It was really hot and humid that day. I remember looking at Paul when he came out on stage and he was wearing long sleeves. Summer in Chicago is as brutal as the winter can be.
lovely. stunning. the greatest band ever and one of their best songs :) kudos.

And I thought I was content with the album version...OMFG
the best live Mats video I have ever seen!
Wow. That was really cool. Thank god for the Replacements
Twins won 15 straight in '91, Nice rib Paul
WOW. Great video mashup and a spot-on illustration of the end of the band.
This is AMAZING to finally watch. Thanks so much for posting. You hear about record companies finding randomness in their archives. Here's hoping...
Somebody must've videotaped it somewhere; camcorders were common enough then
Camcorder? Did you just watch? It was pro-shot and shelved!
@@rookiecard i know but someone else must've been filming too
I think we filmed the whole show, but original negs apparently lost by record co.
Too bad this song was never recorded properly. This gives me the shivers.
?? It's on Hootenanny
Drum machine demo
Paul played all the instruments
Wrong in every way possible except shivers is correct.
Scott, if Paul had wanted it recorded by the full band he would have done so. Get information.
@@scottraycraft1885 Paul tried it with Chris on drums and thought it didn't sound right so he re-recorded it with a drum machine.
Really dig this. The recorded radio broadcast is great- Nice to get a visual companion to at least 1 tune.

I was at the April '91shows at the Marquee Club in London both nights. Slugged back beers chatting with Tommy at one point post-show...
This is great. Thank you!
color me impressed
Enjoy Every Sandwich? Love it! Can't we start a secret club of mats fans that meet at bars around the country every 5th Friday of the month?
💜
Long live the mats

Great shirts.
🥰
@epsteinsmutha1 I saws both lineups, and I can tell you it was 2 different bands. Nobody could replace Bob.
@machbaby Yeah but man, he put out a great album, "Horseshoes and hand grenades" after the split. And what a painter!
Aww man
There has to film of the entire last concert somewhere
3:03 what is the name of the blond guitarist with the big hair?
Thats Tommy Stinson ....of bang and pop
@@RnREnglands Of Bash & Pop, and the Replacements.
That's Tommy Stinson, and that's a bass guitar for the record
the audio sounds like it is from the replacements' last performance at taste of chicago, july 4 1991. (the video is a mix.)
Great video, but it would be much better if audio came out of more than just one channel.
Paul gave the film crew the boot a few songs in...I believe it's in the broadcast...
Ya know, I watched this video and wasn't impressed at all, then later in the day and into the next I couldn't stop thinking about it. So, here I am again.
@perryfilmsinc That's such a bummer... Would have made such a great DVD.
Never saw no mountains...except on a six pack of beer. The band died live on XRT.....and music hasn't been nearly as good since.
Why is it only coming out of 1 speaker?
Classic! Lol!!
thats the way paul would want it
Darron Nelson wrong.
@mattaki It more than likely is. I think that's the only time the Mats played this song live. At least that's what I read in the book about them.
wicked

IIRC that was on the 'Shit Shower and Shave' bootleg, which had portions of 3 shows from 1989.
Never seen the Sox go 15 and 0
@perryfilmsinc So any luck on finding any more of the footage from the final show? I'd kill for a copy of it!
@perryfilmsinc Isn't that typical. Looks like the makings of something fantastic here... what happened to the project?
Wow! I've got the audio of the Chicago show, but have never seen any of the video. Thanks! Was the whole show filmed?
Wasn't the Taste of Chicago show their last show??
Help me out what is this black and white footage???
Live drums on this one, eh? Quality!
Is there any way that the rest of the film could be recovered?

You know the rest
That's a sandwich analogy I think we can all get behind.

@perryfilmsinc tragic!
Tempo's sped up on this one.
@13Xanadu Nah, Paul left in a taxi after a minute and a huff.
Lloyd Dobbler.
