As a Bills fan, I see nothing wrong with what Steve Smith Sr. said. He gave his critique. Said where he thinks what Coleman can work on. Where the coaches can utilize him so he can thrive. It’s an unbiased opinion. Maybe the coaches can take some of his ideas, and incorporate it.
I was going to say something, but you already did. I love Keon Coleman though! I believe he's going to be a quality NFL player. He doesn't need to be Stefon Diggs.
Most of his critiques were constructive and fine but they both had an under tone of “this guy is having a bad rookie year and didn’t warrant a second round pick .” Which is factually incorrect. That’s where my beef is. If you are watching the games you’d realize he’s having a nice year and has played his role well for a kid who is this young and is in the second best offense in the NFL and which has the deepest collection of weapons in the NFL currently. So, hes in a loaded offense , a second round pick (not an early 1st) , and the Bills don’t utilize Coleman a ton not because he can’t play but because of the offense Brady is running. They don’t throw a lot of balls to the outside or deep vertically. They are low percentage throws and Josh isn’t as accurate on those plays. That’s why Cooper and Coleman’s numbers are down. They aren’t getting crazy separation, this is true, but Josh also gets rid of it quickly underneath (or to back) or just pulls down and runs a lot. A lot if the underneath stuff goes to Shakir, Kincaid/ Knox, and then the three backs and Samuel. As they play elite d’s in the playoffs, there will be more teams capable of stopping the run game and the short passing game. This is where we will see Coleman , Cooper, and Hollins more again. Even with all this working against Coleman he’s such a home run hitter , he’d have 700-800 yards this year had he not get injured as the 5th or 6th weapon in the offense.
I am a Bills fan too since 1990. SSS's assessment is pretty good. Everybody knew or at least should know that Coleman was a project WR. It will probably take him another year to fully develop and show better hands, better route movement.
We used to give receivers 3 years to develop. He’s 21 years old in a crowded receiver room on a team with high expectations. No one in tune with the Bills situation is surprised with his performance in Year 1.
Steve Smith had 10 receptions for 154 yards his rookie year and 54 receptions for 872 his second year. Both over 15 games. He's proof it takes time even when people didn't think he was the guy.
Keon's 21 years old, needs some development, and he's playing on a very very good football team that isn't in evaluation mode. He plays exclusively outside due to a glut of decent talent inside and he's out of position clearly, to a large extent. They are killing dudes on the ground right now too with Allen and Cook and they just don't need Keon to be the guy this year. Right now he has a 15.4 aDOT which is 9th overall in the league. It's tough to get consistent production when you're not getting easy or designed stuff. 1.89 yards per route run tho, which is ahead of JSN, Diggs, DK, Sutton, Ridley, Aiyuk, Deebo, Kirk, Nuk, Tyreek, Meyers, Bateman, Waddle, G-Will, Doubs, Diontae, Marvin Harrison, Pittman, Tank Dell, Keenan Allen and Amari Coop. And he's playing out of position! We'll see. He's averaging a pretty hefty 20.8 yards per catch with a 108.1 passer rating when targeted. Maybe in a year or two he will be ready to ascend to a key receiving role for them that plays to his strengths. I'm not super duper high on Keon, but I can definitely see how he will figure it out to a large extent at some point down the road. I could see him evolving into some variation between Tee Higgins and Michael Thomas. Certainly you COULD knock him for his poor contested catch rate, which was something of an issue in college too, but he's only had 13 opportunities in that regard and he's caught 5. That's basically the same as Brian Thomas (5 of 12 contested targets caught). He needs to improve here still, and I think he will, certainly if he sees more targets in the red zone (Sup, Tariq Woolen). At age 21, playing out of position, and coming into a team ready to win a Super Bowl now with a ton of established veterans all around him, it makes sense his development would be muted somewhat. But as time goes by, I think we will start to see more consistency with his production as his familiarity with Josh Allen develops and his role expands. I'm encouraged.
Nice take. Shakir, Cooper, Kincaid, Cook, Allen, and any other mix of Hollins/Davis/Johnson/Knox/Coleman. The offense is truly everybody eats. I'm glad Coleman can just make plays when he needs to and ease into the league. Fuck Miami Jordan Poyer btw for his dirty hit that injured Coleman.

No one ever expected Coleman to replace Diggs. Anyone that said otherwise was insane. If he's a replacement for anyone (he's not), it would have been Gabe Davis.
Steve, you are so right on all your analysis. I’m a bills fan, but you hit that right on the bull’s-eye. Hopefully he could do something in the playoffs…
He’s been great at YAC and Josh always looks his way in scramble drill situations. He’s at his floor right now and that’s still a really useful player to have in the Bills balanced offense. He’s has a long ways to go if he’s going to become a high volume guy, but he was expected to be a developmental project. He grinds in the offseason too, he’s cousins with Ceedee they work out together and he was working out with Ja’Marr Chase last offseason. He’s been better than Gabe Davis, nobody expected him to replace Diggs.
I will say this. He is very athletic. Getting jammed on the line to me is about technique and learning how to get off the jam, especially when you aren't the fastest. He did miss 4 games right when he was getting hot. He definitely needs to work on his route running. Had he not been hurt, he probably would be at 700, maybe 800 yds. That isn't great, but it's good for a rookie. To say that he hasn't made an impact is disingenuous, and no one in billsmafia, which I am a member of, thought he would replace diggs. Him and Diggs have totally different skill sets, so we never thought that. Keon is a Gabe Davis upgrade, right out of the draft, and will suppose Gabe in time. The kid gives the bills something they have never had, which is a body control high point catch guy. We have never had that. He has shown that a few times. Kinda disappointed that you didn't show any of them. Probably because you didn't see them or look for them, but I digress. #gobills
i agree his route running does need to be cleaned up to sell it since he doesn't have the separation speed but majority of the incompletion has been holding on the DB. i hope KC hears their criticism that he's not the guy and comes back hungrier next season.
I thought all along he could become a legit #2. He didnt have the speed to matchup with other teams #1 CB. I hope he puts in some serious work this off season
While I agree with Steve Smith assessment as a Bills fan. He’s hard on today’s player. This kid does have a lot of development he’s a rookie who can grow into being a good player.
Good Assessment, He'll fill out his body and become a physical presence in the near future. He's had his moments, especially against Seattle . It's only his Rookie year that was compromised a lil bit by an injury..
The Bills had a chance to trade up with Philly for BTJ for a 2nd round pick but Beane didn't want to part with his precious mid draft picks. BTJ would've made this offense unstoppable and would've solved the #1 WR spot for years. Instead we had to give up a 3rd round pick for Cooper anyway so what did they really save out of it?
Bills mafia here & I have zero problem with the c+ grade and think it’s pretty accurate. I hope Keon watches this video and learns from it. It’s not so easy to use him at the slot when you’ve got shakir killing it and the bills offense leaning heavy on the running backs. I think he’s been adequate for a rookie. 2nd rd pick Cole Bishop is barely playing and it looks like the 1st round pick from three seasons ago CB Elam was a wasted & total bust of a pick.
Bills fan here. Steve, your take is 100% accurate. I apologize for my fellow fans, a lot have a weird version of Stockholm syndrome. I think there is definitely upside to Keon with his great attitude. I see him as a really solid WR3, or WR2 who specializes in the red zone. The Bills need separation. Keon didn’t separate in college, no reason to think he’d separate in the NFL. Watching the weapons on Baltimore and Cincinnati blows my mind. It also highlights how crazy what Josh Allen is doing this year. Brandon Beane…draft a WR1! No rebuild years with Allen at QB.
He is never open. Every catch I have seen Colman catch he had a Corner on him... Sure there was some that the Corner wasn't around but that's mostly due to the corner missing his assignment. The one time Josh looks for him is when Josh is scrambling. For some reason when Josh is scrambling Colman finds a way to make the play. In contested catches Colman is elite. In everything else he is OK. Can he become better... Sure... Will he??? Who knows.
He feels like Auden Tate as a receiver probably more athletic but about the same. What would be nice is if Steve Smith could get certain players at the NFL level and just compare tapes to guys that are similar.
He's been good, he missed 5 games with a wrist injury. Hes been a big play machine for the Bills and has had some great contested catches as well as a few great YAC plays, if he didnt miss 5 games he would have had around 800 yards as a 2nd round raw 20 year old rookie. He will be a good WR2 for the Bills going foward.
I have no problem with the grade cause i see the same things myself. I do like the competitivness and physicality he plays with though I see thats not an area they judged him from in this critique. Games like seattle and a few others before the injury you really see it. But he does have to work on alot more with refinement in his route running I see that as a big area of concern with him imo.
10:48 Ya but that's not a bad route, if anything it just shows that him and Josh aren't on the same page where Josh knows he can freestyle like that and still get open
@keshavr8231 never said he was good, did I? If you look at Steve's "scouting reports" he continually brings up second-hand stats anyone can find and passes them off as his own. He tries to sound smart (on multiple different shows) giving alignment statistics when a quick Google search can bring up almost everything he says. I think Keon is very raw and will take multiple years for him to start being an impact player - just like your boi Steve.
Hmm I know steve knows ball better than my but keons hands have been more of a problem than his athleticism. I think he's just a rook getting used to the game I mean he absolutely roasted jalen ramsey off the line but the ball went off his hands for a pick. His releases are inconsistent but his best ones are absolutely pro level.
Bro u must dont watch bills games. The stats is not t Everything. He has made amazing catches when we needed him. And he been injured. He has a bright future you'll see.
24 catches in 11 games. Hes had moments, but he needs to develop, and to one commentors point, hes young and has time. Dont need to get defensive and throwout meaningless stats or KPIs. 24 catches in 11 games. Room to grow for sure, and has the talent to get to another level. Chill every one. A little constructive criticism is okay 👍
Yeah i would agree with this. I like coleman but if he was as great as some people think josh would give him more then 2 targets a game. If your good josh will find you. A lot of his catches are agter josh scrambled for 7 seconds
I think Josh gotta put it up n the air for him to go get it!!... He has caught alot of good balls that were called back, that showed his ability!!.. He got sine work to do, but he gonna b ight!... Watchin ur tape made realize that we neede Coop, bc he cant create separation, But Josh gotta let him make a play on the ball and let him use his hops to go get it!!.. Bc dude got hops and good size to make it make it shake!!..
Gotta disagree. And I loved your game as a smaller receiver growing up. But Coleman is colston today and what made colston great was ball placement and his ability too know when too body catch / extend his hands. That’s what Coleman needs too work on and Josh Allen as well. If I could tell them both something it’s look at the film on them and try to implement that into their game. I seen him early not beating press but he learned that his best weapon against press is blocking in the running game. Because he put hands on dbs and they don’t be as quick to press him.
I cant wait to come back to this video on keon coleman in 3 years, complete discredit of a lot of keons talent and ability and didnt look at any positive play that he made this year, alot of great catches and great traits and growth as a rookie physical receiver. Describing as “just a guy” is not true. Acting as if he does more talking thank hard work is insane lol keon will cook this lazy evaluation in the future
I get wat Steve is saying and he is right as far as getting better but I think they criticizing seeing him to soon sometimes players forget that sometimes u need to learn from somebody else to teach u things we got shakur and cooper so he will be fine
C+ is fine; bills spread the ball around so his stats are meh; it’s also cold up here so, run game is key; he does run with high pad level tho, leaving his chest exposed for jams and furthering his inability to get out of his breaks; I do agree, to many jab steps, not enough striding on defenders toes, breaking cushion and snapping out of his route; again, his inability to drive out of the breaks from his routes, is likely due to poor running posture; if Coleman can get a bit stronger and faster this off season, improving his running mechanics with some track n field drills, with his ability to catch the ball; should be a problem 1v1, he’s only 21, he’ll be a real good player 📈
Good analysis, but some real truth: 1. He wasn’t expected to replace Diggs. He was meant to replace Davis. 2. He’s already better than Davis 3. Do a redraft and I’d still take him over Worthy, Legette and Ladd.
I dont care what kinda all around good wr he is we got other guys. We just need a dude who can track a deep ball and catch it or win 1 on 1 i the endzone
Well isn’t Shakir technically the Z? Ain’t no way he’s coming off the field for Coleman! Also this is an equal opportunity offense. I don’t think there’s been many 100 yard games from any Bills wide receivers.

Like your analysis!
Sure... Will he??? Who knows.
Steve is 100% right but he just turned 21, if he works hard in a couple years I think he can be a very solid #2
Sunday December 29th 3:30 PM.... Comment has aged well 😊
has shown some flashes down the stretch since injury, but agree with him looking overmatched at times as an outside WR.
Has made an impact in 50/50 balls. Not sure what you talking bout.
To bad this was before the last game against the jets, he had an amazing sideline catch that got called back & a nice high point TD catch
He feels like Auden Tate as a receiver probably more athletic but about the same. What would be nice is if Steve Smith could get certain players at the NFL level and just compare tapes to guys that are similar.
Coleman as a rookie is playing better than Diggs pre injury
Huh? You must have a fever.
He has lived lower than expected…
Allen’s accuracy will be the issue if the bills will get to the show …
His WR’s do not create space , this is accuracy had to be there ..
10:48 Ya but that's not a bad route, if anything it just shows that him and Josh aren't on the same page where Josh knows he can freestyle like that and still get open
100% accurate from Steve
Seems more & more like you don't actually watch the games Steve-O
we can all see that Bills logo. Keon isn't good, at least not yet
@@tjsumigray22 Steve was a pro bowler his first year and an impact starter his second
@keshavr8231 liarrrrr go check his rookie stats you 🤡
There some games where he flashes for sure but alot of duds, im excited for em honestly
Steve is the goat at breaking down wrs
Hes made some pretty big time catches dude has great hands just put it up Steve smith sr was that dude tough as they come pound for pound
The stats is not t
Everything. He has made amazing catches when we needed him. And he been injured. He has a bright future you'll see.
He would’ve easily had a 800 yard season if not injured he had a okay season
Good assessment
A. He fights for the ball.
Critiques are a great, cant improve when everyone says you're doing incredible
Steve hates on everyone. Keon is a good WR
1st-round draft pick for the Panthers, Xavier Legette gets a D while undrafted WR Jalen Coker for the Panthers receives a C+.
This is a great idea to grade the receivers
Can you review X Worthy’s season
I was hoping for Ladd mcconkey but keon can be pretty good if he puts his head down and works on his craft
11:36 funny asl😂😂
No he's not a true num1 but still better than anyone josh had at this point lol.
We definitely should draft a wr 1st or 2nd.
Before watching the grade should be a C-
500 yards on 27 rec Idk wtf steve talking about on this one
I get wat Steve is saying and he is right as far as getting better but I think they criticizing seeing him to soon sometimes players forget that sometimes u need to learn from somebody else to teach u things we got shakur and cooper so he will be fine
Does Steve understand putting him in the slot would be stupid considering they have Shakir?
I honestly think the data lying to you Steve
Yeah, corny. He was playing VERY WELL before he got hurt. Don't agree with this.
Cry
@JuwanAnderson58 Good one. You got me!
He is a just another guy. Nothing he did was special or worth gawking over.
A lot of emotional people in the Comments over a fair assessment
Coleman will be a #3 wr at best, dude can't get open or create space
It’s almost like Allen does’t have a lot of talent in the WR room. Yet, 31+ points a game. 🤔
He doesn’t tho… only Amari Cooper. Shakir is on the rise though. After them 2 it’s very Ehhh…
Good analysis, but some real truth: 1. He wasn’t expected to replace Diggs. He was meant to replace Davis. 2. He’s already better than Davis 3. Do a redraft and I’d still take him over Worthy, Legette and Ladd.
over Ladd? I mean over the other two is bad as well but Ladd is egregious
@@keshavr8231if Keon didn’t get injured he would be right with Ladd statistically
@@keshavr8231 Not really when you already have Shakir and Curtis Samuel.
Steve should work with these guys
Ice 🧊 up camp
The boy very athletic you wrong bro
I dont care what kinda all around good wr he is we got other guys. We just need a dude who can track a deep ball and catch it or win 1 on 1 i the endzone
You quite literally can’t grade his rookie season he barely had one
I have said the same thing, he won't resign with buffalo
Can’t put him inside we NEED him at outside. We have Cooper and career special team Hollins outside that’s it!
Well isn’t Shakir technically the Z? Ain’t no way he’s coming off the field for Coleman! Also this is an equal opportunity offense. I don’t think there’s been many 100 yard games from any Bills wide receivers.
Mack Hollins is more reliable than Keon right now.
Why not take a Worthy or McConkey?
Keon's rookie season is better than Smith's at this point if we're talking receiver... What was Steve's excuse during his rookie season 🤷🏾♂️..
Keon Coleman is exactly who he was in college so far. Jump ball specialist no sepration. Steve Smith is not a great evaluator either.
