What if Korean Math Teacher From SNU Try UPCAT

- Hello I'm Seungha from Korea.
I tried to solve some UPCAT for the first time.
It was very different from Korea and the most difficult part was
Actually understanding the English. Lots of words I had to guess the meaning..
Anyway I really enjoyed solving this problems and would like to try similar contents again someday!
Thanks for watching po :)
His English is way better then before. Daily conversation with random people is a good way of learning it.

Your English is better than Ryan.
I took the UPCAT exam in August 2009. I failed the exam. It took time for me to move on. But, now I'm all good. I just graduated from my Masters in a Business School here in Paris, France last March. It became my motivation to be better with whatever I do. Thanks for this vlog, Seungha 😊
Amazing
@@savagekruger77 merci beaucoup 🙏
Kwang kwang kwang hahahaha
So all upcat passer could do the same? Or better.
Yeah for sure. Everybody can do the same thing. Just an update. I took another Master and just graduated again last 29 February. Now, heading to new challenges ahead of me. Good luck to your plans! @@akosibrothercoolpzzle123
Exam is around 4 hours with around 400+ questions. You’re allowed to eat snacks while taking the test. Aside from your UPCAT test exam results (right minus wrong), they take into consideration your high school grades’ weighted average.
I can easily understand your english, its better than before
As a recent UPCAT taker I appreciate how he takes the test even with the language barrier, and how he gives honest feedback
You can speak English well, Mr. Seungha. Don't be conscious about your English communication skills, we Filipinos will always respect and support you.
This content is refreshing… entrance exam review. Gosh! Brings back memories when I was applying for college.
Seungha ang tagal mong wala sa u tube, youre one of the few that i like kasi totoo ka.
You are getting better. (I am an English grammar and literature, teacher.) Keep practicing. Upcat, in my days, was about 150-200 items, mostly English, Science, Math. Took one test, qualified for two bachelor degree applications. I miss taking the same test 😊
Your English has improved a lot. I can tell by how comfortably you speak.
I passed UPCAT, ACET, and DLSUCET around 10 years ago. Compared to ACET and DLSUCET, UPCAT has the most number of questions in Filipino (math word problems in Tagalog, questions about Filipino popular culture, etc). The reading comprehension part of the UPCAT is quite practical, it tests your ability to read and infer information from different kinds of sources (newspaper articles, flight schedules, short stories, charts, maps, etc). Personally, in terms of difficulty: ACET was the hardest, DLSUCET was the easiest.
its called DCAT now
whats ACET btw?
@@taniesaz2230 Ateneo College Entrance Test
the Tagalog questions in math are usually just offerend to a very small percentage of exam takers (5-15%?). mine didn't have any. my husband's did, i think in his case a lot of his questionnaire was actually in Tagalog, which is a bummer cause he grew up in Cebu and barely knew any Tagalog 😂
I agree with this. I took those three tests and passed all three 25 years ago. DLSU was easiest and Ateneo is the hardest.
I'm impressed! I watched some of your videos when you just arrived. You're much better now. In fact, you hardly spoke English before. Good job! Congrats!
Your English really improved a lot and I'm so proud of being able to follow your journey here in the Philippines. Thank you for this video! Reminded me of how nervous I was when I took the UPCAT. It is right-minus wrong so I was so conscious about avoiding mistakes and ultimately failed it. 😅 It's okay cause I passed 2 other known universities in the Philippines and graduated with no problems so I guess UP was really not meant for me.
Wow! I didn't notice that it's been 1 yr na pala since I first watch ur videos & subscribed.🎉🎉🎉😊😂😮!!Looking back, as I recall,u saw President BBM in motorcade campaigning.
You should do more content like this. It's very interesting for a genius like you to solve these exams 😂
I took UPCAT 20 yrs ago. The exam is 4 hours. We have 4 subjects (Language Proficiency, Math, Science and Reading comprehension). Half of the questions is in English and Half in Filipino. The test scores is just part of the requirements to be admitted. When we get our results, we are given a University Predicted Grade (UPG), which based on our UPCAT test score and our grades in high school. The UPG will tell if you will be addmitted to your choice of campus (UP has 9 campuses to choose from) and the degree program of your choice in that campus. Passing rate is about 10-15%.
This is probably why I passed because my high school grades were very good. I had a bit difficulty in the Math part but I breezed through English Proficiency and Comprehension. English was my favourite subject in high school. I don't remember the Science part.
Amazing how you still remember the details. I couldn't. All I remember was my dad who also graduated from UP telling me, "you'll know you passed if your mail feels thick." (yes, it was still slow mail notification back then). "Thin, if you failed." Thick because the letter comes with a scholarship offer that needs signing. It felt thick. And that's all I remembered. Nice to know I join the 15% club. :)
If the passing rate is between 10-15%, UP qualifies as a very selective university here in the US. I took UPCAT in the mid-70s and passed. I graduated from the UPSE in 1979 (I know, a very long time ago). I look at my UP days with fond memories and extraordinary and undiluted pleasures!
Your english really improved very well, I have been following you quite long, i think your second come back in the Philippines, I enjoy your videos , stay healthy and enjoy while staying in Philippines, stay healthy as well
Seungha, you must be a very good teacher because you figured out right away that the reason why it can be a struggle to learn math is because English is not our primary language. Filipinos are taught Math in English and all our standardized Math tests are in English too. That's been a huge problem for the Philippines since time immemorial. And the scoring for the UPCAT is right minus wrong. I hope you continue improving your English and Tagalog so you can teach here in the Philippines. That will be a huge help for us! :-)
thats a myth. singaporeans are taught in maths and science in english aswell, and they are also taught their mother tongues, the native language of their race. filipinos treat english not as a language but as a subject that is learned in school when in fact it should be treated as a living language and used in daily life. its the reason why upper middle class schools perform better in standardized tests in the philippines. not because they are wealthy but because they use english as a part of their daily life. hilahan sana pataas, wag yung palusot.
I agree with Eno. I am good at Math. I took engineering in college. But math was difficult for me when there is english question. I only understand numbers back then. But since I started to work and watched British tv series, I use english most of the time. I can now understand Math with English question 😂
I even passed the Civil Service Exam without review because English is easier now.
@@enoshima6699 siguro yan ung dahilan kung bakit, AYAW Ng guro ko sa English na magsalita Ng Tagalog sa loob or labas Ng paaralan. We were taught all out english in elementary, high school and college. Tagalog was only used in filipino subject.
I was born in the 60's and majority of the filipinos back in the days speaks fluent english. Why? becoz educators back then went to a rigid schooling, exams and trainings. Our school calendar was from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4p.m. Saturday was half day for our extra curricular activities adding that I don't remember Dept. Of Education back then hired teachers especially at english language who have tongue deficiency or accentuated tongue. Those days teachers must be born in Manila whereas their tagalog is straight unlike these past years that everybody can teach even if they are not qualified and not a BSE course graduate. Brilliance and pride of the students must've start and finished at school and to be able to do that educators have to be best of the best where we have in the 60's to 80's. So saddened at this time around that many has a difficulty to construct an english grammar.

Only a small percentage (around 10 to 15%) of applicants pass the UPCAT which is administered nationwide. It's fun to study at the University of the Philippines! Your video made me miss my alma mater. Thanks for this. Enjoyed your video! ❤
The key in speaking good english is do not be afraid to speak the language.. keep up the good work..
Correct. His English is okay. He will get better the longer he stays in the Phil.
Hi Seungha, I agree with your own observation with your English-speaking skills. I reckon you definitely are speaking even better now compared to when you first came to the PHilippines. The best way to improve on your English-speaking is to keep on using the English language, watch and listen to English programs, news, and music. By the way, I hope you can collaborate with Jessica Lee as well. She lived in Bacolod when she and her family came to the Philippines. Her English is really good. You might want to ask her for tips :)
I am a regular follower op ur vlog, n I can say dat ur English has improved considerably.
Keep using English n don’t pay attention 2 wat u think u r doing wrong. U r doing just fine. Listen 2 how others use d language n adjust ur usage of oral English.
At d same time, familiarize urself wid Tagalog.
You are right Boo...yourEnglish is way way better than last year or from the 1st time I subscribed to you.
I’m glad to see you back. Yeah it’s over a year now and never heard of you since then.
This video is 1 year old
I'm glad you have improved a lot...It's amazing!!! Your teacher is really good ...Korean math is really hard but you can easily answer those question if you get familiarized with the terms or meaning of the word. After that, you can be a math teacher. You can share your knowledge and technique on how to solve the problem in the easiest way...
Wow Boo, your English is good. Pinay here in USA. I’m a big fan of yours. I love all your vlogs. I’m not good in Math but I’m very fond of Science & History.
Your english is good! it is getting better and better over time. Kudos!
Keep it up Seungha! Learning a new language is fun good as well for the mind. I am currently learning as well my 5th language. Have fun!
U'r just aiming for 10k subscriber but now it's more than what u expected. More subscribers for u Singa😅😅 este Seungha😊😊😊
Youre getting better and better seung ha,I watch all your videos and your improving 🎉
I subscribed because you were humble enough to admit that you committed mistakes. ❤
Your English is definitely improving. I like this content very much.
UPCAT... during my time, it is somewhat difficult to pass the exam, aside from the cut-off score, you also have keep in mind that it is "right-minus-wrong", meaning all of your wrong answers will be deducted from your right answers... e.g. in a 100-item test with the passing score of 75, if your score is 80, your final score for that exam is 60, thus failing the exam 😅
It is still right-minus-wrong. My brother just took the exam last Sunday.
To be precise, Right minus 1/4 Wrong
The right-minus-wrong adds pressure to test takers and discourages them from guessing the answer. Also shading the circles perfectly was cumbersome . I used to mark all my answers first then shade it afterwards.
oh!
when I took the exam, I was unaware that it was right-minus-wrong so I blindly answered/guessed some. 🥲🥲🥲
You're doing really well! Your english is pretty impressive 👍 We appreciate your effort in speaking english on your vlogs 😊
Do you know Filipino boo I passed the civil service exam here in the Philippines without review because it's easier when you are exposed to those questions than reviewing or studying? Experience is still the best teacher for me.
My daughter passed the UPCAT in 1990 and graduated in 1995 from UPManila..and she said it is hard...
What I've noticed is that Philippines and South Korea has different system and students have different study habits too. Students in Korea are too tired everyday. They're very exhausted. If the body is tired you can't concentrate in your class so you will spend more time studying your lessons. While the students in the Philippines can have a little bit of fun while studying in their school. And also enjoying the company of their teachers while in Korea student and teacher relationship is very different.
Agreed
I'm watching your blog new subscriber I really enjoyed it
Hello from Orange Park, Florida, USA. I am following your blog about taking the entrance examination for admission to UP.
In the early 60s when I took it, there were no review materials available. It was truly just what knowledge you gained from elementary and high school. It was a five hour long process in the university theater in Diliman. There was only one way to get the result. UP will send you a card congratulating you of your acceptance with enrollment dates and whether to take English A class subject or English I. The difference between the English classes is your test score in the English portion of the entrance exam. I didn't know how I did until I received the card/letter in the mail. Test scores? No idea.
Having review materials available now should help tremendously especially for slow readers like me. The review materials provide test takers the familiarity especially for time constrained examinations.
Hello @filipinoboo … I happen to see this video. I like the content. Thank you for being honest with your thoughts about it. I also work as a high school Math teacher here in Philippines. I also got the chance to teach for 3 months at Seoul Technical High School in your beautiful country, Korea as an exchange teacher under the Korea-Philippines Teacher Exchange Programme of UNESCO-APCEIU. Having been an exchange teacher, I get to see that there really is a comparison between Korea and Philippine education system. I enjoyed this content. Keep doing some more about it. :)
Your english communication skills changed so much you give always effort, interest, and positive way to learn. Congratulations!
Gdam kuya Seungha yes do not be conscious your english is now much much better no worry be safe take care and enjoy staying in our country be happy God bless u🙏🏻💖🤗 i am a 66y/o mother from dasmarinas city, cavite🤗
Your conversational English is pretty good. Just keep practicing. The UPCAT just finished last weekend. I hope you have some takers among your viewers so they can tell you about the number of questions in each subject.
You speak English much better now than before, Seung-ha. You should be proud of yourself. 😊
hi mr. seungha.. first time i saw you vlog... one advice in your progress in english is constant speaking the english language itself... you can also learn it thru music even learning a song. You must learn it not just thru speaking but also listening, reading and learning visually. the thing in the philippines is english is our second language. sometimes we are comfortable in speaking english rather than tagalog, hehe... but be easy you can learn it without noticing it...
Seungha's English is improving. Also, he is learning to be conyo. It's so fun to listen .~ 😆
You are right, you're English is way better than before. I remember your first vlog here in the Philippines, you can't speak that much but now, you're nailing it😊
Good luck...UPCAT is challenging...my son passed the exam and graduated from UP Diliman in Quezon City, Metro Manila ...UP is the premier state university in our country...
The way I understand is what is taught in Korea is way more advanced than what is taught in philippine schools especially in math. That is why korean students have to study their butts off from elementary up to after they get accepted in the best university they were aiming to join. When they get accepted in a university then that is the time they can relax
Your english has improved a whole lot! Just watch a lot of english movies and pay attention to how they speak. Practice reading aloud with emphasis on your R and L! Hope to see more improvement 3 months from now. 😊
I remember when I took the UPCAT it was really nerve racking because aside from hard questions, there is a time pressure and it is a right minus wrong exam.
Direct communication and interact with english speaking people will definitely improve your english even the pronunciations. Your english is much better than before, and your honesty is admirable., so keep it up.
❤❤take good care always....and pls take good care Eyel...thanks
The Filipino way of studying: We always have a certain time to study and we also give time to condition our body and mind...Another way is to use the technique like Leaning is Fun (for teachers) - This is also effective by incorporating the lesson into games. once in a while...the teachers effectively apply Benjamin Franklin's quote on education: "Tell me and I forget; teach me and I may remember it, involve I learn".
He knows how to effectively study, he was top 1% student in korea in his time after all. His limitation in the UPCAT reviewer was the english verbal problems that he couldn't really completely understand.
When I took the electrical engineering board exams, there were problems that the were worded deliberately tricky so that misunderstanding it would give you a different answer, you really have to read and reread so you won't miss the subtle wordings. There were also some problems which had very simple solutions of simply substituing the number figures to a known formula. The problem is the problem is a long-worded one with a lot of data figures (maybe six data when you only need two to subtitute in the formula), your problem would be to correctly identify the correct data that you need in the formula. I couldn't really believe how easy that question was but most of my batchmates got it wrong because they chose the wrong figures to use. I wonder if these types of questions are used in the UPCAT?
Nice gud job boo.. ur English is really gud
i like the confidence you have while speaking in english... continue to build that up and you're off to a good start.
I think as long as your English is conversational--it's okay
It's also good that you gave a tip to Koreans who have plans of studying here in the Philippines. It's good advice, to hone the language proficiency level first (whether it's English, or French, or Italian, etc.) before studying abroad.
I took UPCAT a very long time ago.. just a few days after I took the NCEE ( National College Entrance Exam) which was a must for all High School Grads and would determine if you are qualified to get into a non vocational college. I was already struggling with Math during that time so I was not really looking forward to it. Getting accepted in UP was a challenge for me because 3 out of 4 of my siblings got into UP High School. As the first child to graduate High School, I told myself I must show them I could be in UP too. I never bought the Reviewer because it was too expensive for my budget during that time. I went there almost fresh from taking the NCEE and I looked around and met really brainy people... like I was in between 2 Valedictorians from top Schools in our area. I was just the mediocre student averaging 92-93 in her report card... not even making it into the TOP TEN. So there I was breezing through the English Comprehension part of the Exam, wasn't too bothered by it... Then came the Mathematics and Science parts... It was all good when it was in english, I mean the problems. But when I discovered that there were math and Science problems written in Filipino, I really thought I wasn't going to pass. I remember trying to understand a question written in Filipino where the only word I understood was tatsulok..hahahahah....I didn't even review my answers...I just told myself, well if I don't pass then I don't pass.. I just took out my breadsticks and munched on it( because apparently when you take major exams, you have to eat foods that are not circular in shape and you must wear something red! hahahhaha) . I remember the Proctor kept circling my seat because I was playing with my pen... I was making patterns on my answer sheet as my answer... LIke ABCDE then next numbers would be EDCBA...then I'd do straight A's, B's etc..Then I would drop my pen on the answer sheet, the letter were it falls on would be my answer. Then I remembered somebody telling me that on exams like these, majority of the answers would be letter C, so I answered that too...hahahahah...I came out of the testing center really drained with a terrible headache... But it was better than how my sister 's body reacted to the exam when she took it. She kind of like developed PTSD, she peed on her bed and had a fever for a few days...hahahahha...
Your english is improving and your tagalog as well! I passed the UPCAT before but not the course that I want.
In last week's UPCAT, it was 80 each for Reading and Language and 45 each for Math and Science.
You speak good English Seungha, and you will definitely speak fluently if you try to speak it everyday. Practice makes perfect as they say. Fighting !
Your English is better. Dont feel awkward about it. Just use it everyday and if there is possiblity to use it.
And i don't know if you notice it , your Tagalog is great
Your English is already very good. ❤️❤️
UPCAT is not really too difficult to answer. But there's too many applicants competing for limited number of slots and this is the source of pressure and anxiety for many who are taking the exam. The high school grades are also taken into factor. The grading system used by the school. There's also a geographical factor since the slots available are distributed among the different regions in Philippines. Lastly, there's a chance thay even if you have a very high score but you're 30 ranks lower than other applicants for the course you applied for, then you might not pass the exam. Sometimes though your score may just be enough to be given a chance to apply for a different course other than the ones you chose during the application.
I enjoy contents like this! Good job! ❤
Better to hear you while watching than watching you together with subtitle 😊
I passed UPCAT for Biology when I was 16, but I didn't study in UP in the end because it was too far. I forgot how long it took for each problem, but I remember finishing early and thinking it wasn't that hard. The main struggle really is the limited slots. Which means only a few students get in, even if more students passed the exam.
Where are you? No more videos?
I think your English is excellent. ❤
Practice makes perfect seungha! ..Just speak english all the time..❤❤❤😅
I really hope Seungha can teach at any Science High School.Your can help mold our future scientists to be globally competitive.
Your English is going great. And your Filipino accent is clear. :)
Hey bro where are you now? I've been waiting for your vlog but it looks like you stopped vlogging already. What happened?
Ang galing mo po! 👏👏👏
try to have a collab with jessica lee she speaks very well in english...😊
Filipino American here. You speak English very well for just learning it for a short time. It helps a lot if you speak it in a regularly so it’s good that you’re in the Philippines because you’ll get to practice a lot there. 😊
I know that you can solve math problem but dont worry to the other problems because that is just a normal problem to all of us ..
I hope you can visit University of the Philippines again, Seungha.
Your English is fine. We can understand you very well. 🙂🙂🙂
Your English is better.. keep it up!!
Hi, Seungha! It was great listening to you speaking in English. I personally can understand your spoken English, and I suppose most people subscribed to you would think the same. 🫰🏻✨️
I wasn't thinking that you will make a vlog about your attempt at answering UPCAT questions. I somehow understand your curiosity and agree that it can be fun to know how one would score on that kind of test. I think it's nice that you enjoyed answering the test items.
UPCAT is in English because it is one of the official languages in the Philippines, the other being Filipino. (Since after the 1986 constitution, at least, when English replaced Spanish as one of the official languages).
UPCAT is basically an aptitude test. The admittance score depends on the campus and choice of program of study. The highest scorers usually enroll in the Intarmed Program of the UP Manila campus. It's a pre-medicine course. I'd refrain from saying anything about cut-off scores because it seems like a touchy topic for some, based on expereince.
But, UPCAT is not the only way to study in UP. Some are admitted through talent tests, like in the College of Fine Arts, or through sports or athletic programs. Transferrees are also admitted after earning 30 units from another college or university, given they satisfy a set of requirements set by the college and program they wish to transfer to.
I took the UPCAT in the mid 90s. I think they gave us about 2 hours to finish the whole exam which combined different subjects. You have to pass your paper whether you finished or not. I think there were over 100 questions at least. I passed but selected a quota course, so they limit the number of students they accept in the Diliman campus. Since I was included in the over quota, they had me recommended to enter the UPLB campus instead. Not sure how it goes nowadays.
As long as your english is understandable and speak confident means you have a good english
Wow your very good in english ❤.. You improve alot.. Any way i enjoy this video
Your English is good. Practice makes perfect so keep on talking in English.
I was surprised how well you speak English. Keep up the good work!
I rememberr taking the UPCAT when reviewers were unheard of and was pleasantly surprised when I passed.
I floated on cloud 9 for days. It didn't matter that we couldnt afford to send me to MM for my studies. I wanted to be happy for the moment.
For those taking it, study and believe that you can pass it. After doing your best pray and God will do the rest.
It's nice to hear you speak Englis I told you in my last comment try to speak English so people can understand you evenif it's not really good
Your English did improve very very much
Hi Filipino Boo it's been a long time welcome back on your blogg i hope you and your girlfriend okay and your business stay safe and Healthy God Bless
The UPCAT exam is 60% of the UPG or University Predicted Grade. Since there are 4 sub tests, then it's like 15% per sub test. Then the balance 40% comes from high school grades from 8 to 11 or 10% per grade level.
Is this true? I passed in 1969 and have forgotten now how scores were computed. I remember there were 3 parts in our exam. English Grammar, English Comprehension, Math. I guess the test have changed a lot since then.
I guess your time it was not yet the UPG method. I will check when this started. My math prof Dr Manlapaz was one of those who contributed to the methodology and algorithm.
Ok it says this started in 1976
Shaks, you got only 3 mistakes in the Math Exam. That was a good score. As for me, I have lots of mistakes but good thing I learned from it. I passed the UPCAT, 13 years ago. All glory to God. Hope you can share your knowledge and skills to Filipino students. Hope you can teach in science high schools.
Ñangya mag ka mukha tayo hahaaha. Pag ka lita ko sa thumbmail mo akala ko ako hahahha
Your English is getting better and your diction too👍
Your English is good. Just keep practicing and speaking it on camera so that it won't be awkward for you but overall, you speak it well.
Your English sounds a lot better! Good job! 🎉
Yeah, I wasn't very good at memorization that is why I hated chemistry. My favorite was math because as long as I understood the principle I would know how to tackle solving it.
truth. i am not good in english and me enrolling in accountancy just made it even more harder 'cause the english in accounting is another level. huhu i am so afraid taking the board.
Where are u now!
