    How do you sit up from laying down?

    • @kims7287

      I can't move as quickly as you but I use the same position of rolling onto my side first then pushing myself up with my arms. I still have a really sharp pain in my neck if trying to roll over too quickly. But other patients have definitely gave me far more tips than any Drs, so thank you! I really appreciate these things!

      I actually do so in bed by getting my legs to go over the edge and then I either use an elbow to get up the rest of the way...or I grab onto my trapeze and pull myself up. I do also find it easier if I tuck my chin for some reason.

      Yeah, head control really affects balance and where your body goes. I use the bed rail on my bed to sit up.

      If you're able to do strengthening exercises of your arms/shoulders, that may help. I've noticed it gets easier the bigger that my muscles get but I'm not sure if that's a typical experience. Either way, practice makes perfect, you'll get the hang of this or find your own technique! 💜

      @ ErinField: yes, same here. I know I'm missing a hip and leg...but I still have a lot of muscle for some reason. By the way, it's lovely to see and hear from you again...where have you been lately? Are you a lawyer yet?

    Hi. I’m a C6-7 quad. I’ve seen a number of your videos. You can tell that you’ve worked hard to have as much function as you do. That’s awesome!! I have one question though. Why are you not using a manual wheelchair? You certainly can! I started out in a power chair and within the first two years was able to say adios to that bulky power chair and use a manual chair all the time. I will admit, it was a bit difficult at first, especially on carpet, or outside. But it is definitely something that’s allowed me to be stronger, more confident and more!! Maneuvering is so much easier, in general, and you can fit in tighter areas. So many advantages!! I’m praying that you start using a manual wheelchair. I’m sure you’ll discover the many benefits! Peace!!

      Thanks! I have a manual wheelchair but do not use it as much as my power wheelchair. Here's my video explaining why: ua-cam.com/video/dTi-upXm8XM/v-deo.html

      Thanks! I watched your video you specified in your reply. I’m a fairly active person and I average anywhere between 3,500 and 4,500 propulsion’s each day, except when I’m sick. I’ve been using a manual chair, solely, for about 25 years and can honestly say that if you exercise and stretch your shoulders and arms, I don’t have triceps, that the shoulder pain is no where near as bad as you’re afraid it will be! Also, if you do end up injuring your shoulder, you always have your power chair to fall back on! Just make sure that you keep the battery in good condition so that if you do need to fall back on it, the battery won’t crap out on you or anything. And as far as exercising, just pushing around in a manual chair is so much great exercise that there’s little that you would need to do in additional exercises to keep strength, flexibility, function, etc. And you certainly don’t need to worry about Carpal Tunnel, as you are also a quad. And I saw another video of yours just now about having a manual chair and going to physical therapy to strengthen yourself and you can use it but I really don’t see the logic in that. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t know of anyone who went to the gym to learn how to swim. You need to get in the water. Why don’t you give your manual chair a try, since you already have it, and use it for 2 months without resorting to your power chair unless absolutely necessary? Go get ‘em!!

    • @masonx54
      @masonx54  5 років тому +3

      I went to therapy a few years ago to strengthen myself, gain independence, and order a manual wheelchair. I can use it and everything but am way less independent in the manual wheelchair than in my power wheelchair. I feel more disabled in my manual wheelchair than in my power wheelchair because I can't do much in it. Also, I'm working a full time job now and need my power wheelchair so that I can drive my van. I know so many people who have had to get surgery due to using a manual wheelchair for years. It's honestly a personal preference as to which type of wheelchair you use. I much prefer my power wheelchair for daily use. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that it's my preference. Thanks for your input, it's much appreciated!

      If you do regular stretching on the floor or mobility work I highly recommend laying on your stomach on a regular basis to keep your back stretched out. Those who have not worked on keeping their back stretched out over the years sometimes wind up with a curved spine where they really can't lay on their stomach or even really sit in their chair without their back being obviously curved. Had a friend a C6 who was in his chair for 40 years and when on the weight lifting bench his back would not flatten out even when he benched 80% Of his body weight. He was a really great guy and loved to play table tennis. When the paddle is strapped around your hand it is fun to play and the paddle doesn't fly across the room
