The Combination Heavy Steam FEF-3/GS-4 Sound Card will come with a variety of sounds from the Soundtraxx sound library, including three prototypical Whistles and Horns that will let you replicate the operation of your favorite 4-8-4 Steam locomotives!

The magic of computerization & sound sampling!
SP actually put the horns on their steamers because they had sound activated crossing gates some areas. The relays on these crossings were tuned to the frequency of the horns, so a steam whistle wouldn't trip them.

All we need now is someone to develop a Bluetooth Speaker small enough to sit in a carriage or wagon and the sound can actually follow the train around the layout.

AusRail Animations i agree. Why not do something like Lionel does with their LionelChief models. Sound built in and remote control. These feel anachronstic compared to the tech thats available now.
Or just get DCC.....
On the Kato soundbox for the line out, you can connect a Bluetooth transmitter and a mini cube Bluetooth speaker with freight or passenger car you can access to when placing and removing the speaker from and can have space and access to it.

From what I can see you don't have to buy every loco with a DCC system -buy 1 card and buy DC trains
I could be mistaken, but the chuff sounds and background noise sounds like it came from a Tsunami 2 decoder. If that’s the case I’d probably put a TSU-1100 in the tender of the engines and it would sound the same.
Soundtraxx designed the electronics and provided the sound sets for the Sound Box, yes.
Don't have an FEF-3 yet, but this will sound nice on my GS-4...
The FEF-3 whistle doesn't sound like 844's actual whistle! but the GS4 whistle sounds better!

Has Kato made these sound cards for Japanese steam and electric locos? I have a small collection and this might be something nice to have for them.
WikdSeafood There are soundcards made for Japanese steam, diesels and electrics coming, yes. They're mostly made and sold for the Japanese market but we're looking into bringing some of them in for distribution in the US as well.

Ben Brooks Not necessarily soon - but it's certainly possible. We're going to try to cover the basics of modern diesels + steam (in particular the ones we've made since they're the ones we're the most familiar with) before moving on to other sound varieties. Please be patient!
KatoUSAinc Will you guys make another run of the City of Los Angeles? Every time they show up on ebay they get bidded up WAY beyond and many of us have no chance of winning. Like they are only for the super rich guys. UP is always popular.

I bought a second hand sound box for $120 on ebay. Sweet deal. And I bought 6 sound cards from another ebayer for $65. 4 out of the 6 sound card supports the locomotives that I have, it makes my collection 10 times better. Worth every penny.
