I crate trained my dachshund puppy. Best decision ever. I followed this advice /info. 1) Dogs do not like to mess in their sleeping area. So I bought a medium size crate, which at the time was big for a puppy. Giving them too much room in the begining can result in.... pooping in one corner, sleeping in the clean side. So I halfed the crate space with a barrier. Still enough room for my puppy to stand, turn around and sleep. I took her outside to pee, potty and run around every couple of hours. Yes, also at night. To my surprise...after a few days, she let me know when she needed to go out. I followed this routine for several weeks, then little by little increased her crate space as she grew. Today I have two happy dachshunds, that love their crate for down time. I only lock their crate at night and when I have to run an errand. They get plenty of outside and couch time. They are spoiled....love my dogs. I just don't like them in my bed........!!
I first learned kenneling when I trained a Springer Spaniel for hunting 35 yrs ago. Where ever we went he had his own little cave. At night I laid my coat over the crate and he was at peace. I also used the word kennel when ever I wanted him to get in something. I could point to the car twenty feet away and say kennel. He ran over and hopped in. It’s very important for their safety. Now my chihuahua loves his little crate. It’s in the dining room and he can sit inside out of the way and see everything going on without getting stepped on.
I love your common sense! We just got our 5 week old Boston Terrier puppy Rose a few days ago, and we had the cage crate with dog bed set up before we went to get her, and she went right to it! But now she wants to sleep and snuggle up to us all the time. I do want for her to be crate trained and I agree with all of your reasoning. With the puppy chewing, potty incidents, and for her safety when we need to sleep or leave her alone, I want her to find it a comforting place to be instead of a punishment. Thank you so much for all the tips. So helpful and I can't wait to start training Rose!
Love your channel it’s informative and also just lovely to watch with all the dogos! I love bostons they are super cute, such an underrated breed! You keep a super clean home with all the canines also which is hard work, fair play to you.
We are bringing home a Boston terrier puppy toward the end of July. I am soaking up every bit of your knowledge I can! Love learning from you with Zuko as well as the older dogs!
I'm getting a Boston in a few weeks time and I was on the fence as to whether or not we needed to crate train him but from watching your videos and others I think it's a great idea even if only for the first few weeks of having them to help with house training 😊
Toni, my boston terrier, cames to me when he was over 1 year old. And he was not an difficult dog. Boston terries are always interesting to look good for their owner. They are easy to training , and they always wants to do the best. I had much other dogs, but Boston's are the best. Jessica, i like all your videos. You do the best with all your lovin' dogs.
Thank you for this. First lesson complete. Bean has the smaller plastic crate so getting my hand in there was difficult. She was apprehensive at first but now associates the crate with a treat.
Jessica, you sure can see Zuko loves to learn. 😊 I found it easy to crate/kennel train my dog. I think I used go to your Bed. I love how Zuko has the Haggerty Dot/Star. Yes I’ve been reading about Boston’s. Crates/Kennels keep our dogs safe when we aren’t home. See you on the next one. 😉 My Niece’s Goldendoodle puppy just goes and lays down in her crate/kennel.
❤ I'm starting to crate train Pippy soon. She has the same play pin and she loves it. I have a wee wee pad in there that she has used , but has starting waiting to potty until I get her out. So she's a big girl lol
Your puppies are always so calm I don’t get it 😭 my Boston terrier is 11 weeks now and if I even put a little dog food in my hand he acts super excited and wild.
Lol it’s something I work on from day 1, but they definitely get crazy time throughout the day lol, I just happen to end up filming around his nap times
After having 2 Bostons, I've found it's also easier to train them as they tend to be incredibly smart. They can pick things up very quickly. The drawback is that they are incredibly smart and thus tend to get bored easily. Smart bored dogs frequently result in trouble.
Does it matter the size of kennel??? My Boston does a lot of submission peeing can you tell me why???? Omg I have so many questions/ I’m so happy I found that you have a page on this!!!!!!!
I’m planning on having a Boston terrier puppy in June! After watching your video, how often do you kennel train a day? How long would you recommend trading your puppy for kennels? Thanks! Great work!
New subscriber to your channel here. I love your fur family, I've heard you say you never feed your dogs raw hide, I was just curious why? Zuko is growing like a weed! Love him :)
Do your dogs sleep in their kennels at night? Or do they sleep in a dog bed? How often do your dogs hang out int their kennels? Also when did you add bedding? Right at the start or once the dogs were used to them?
Loved your video! I am about to bring home a Boston terrier puppy and I was wondering if I need to put a pee pad inside the kennel for the night....what do you think?
I used to crate my Boston/Pit but he somehow squeezed out of the door (I have no clue how) and has also bent the wire with his teeth. And this was just crating him for 1-2 hrs while I was gone.
Our dog is good in the crate during the day but if we put him in at night he doesn't cry or bark we'll wake up in the morning to pee on the floor he'll lift his leg so he doesn't lay in it,we feel it's because he's upset he wants to be in bed with us, like I said we put him in when we leave and he's fine with it.
My beagle is crated at night and when we go out but he chews his bedding and the blanket we put over the crate. He gets in no problem and doesn't wine or cry in the kennel but he destroys his bedding (luckily it's old blankets and not an expensive dog bed.)
I’d be careful even with anything in the crate if he has a habit of chewing his bedding, a lot of dogs lose their lives from eating blankets/towels in their crates
MY 9 WEEK OLD BT POOPS IN HER CRATE ALMOST EVERYTIME I TRY TO INTRODUCE IT. SHE HOWLS AND GETS VERY UPSET WHEN I PUIT HER IN IT.. HELP ! i need to get her used to being in there. she sleeps in the bed with me and does great. I'VE TRIED giving her treats in the crate and feeding her meals in there but she still tries to poop in there. The crate is a wire type and i made it smaller so she would not have too much room but nothing seems to help. Any advice ?
How many training session do you do. A day with a new puppy and how long? I love the Boston terrier breed and I’m thinking of getting this type of dog.
Hi, thanks very much for sharing your knowledge. By collar, do you mean a sonar zap, or a citronella? I have a good old Boston that loves the crate for sleep and rest. My 4 yr Cavalier On The OTHER Hand, will howl / scream to ask us where we are going, or can I come with you? I have tried so many things. I seriously don’t think it is separation ANXIETY, but rather (I say he’s not a Cavalier, he’s a Party Animal!) a where are you going? Can I come with you? If I yell to him, Not Yet, or I’m going to store etc., he quiets down. Please give me some hacks! I think I might’ve taught him this, by introducing the sing command too early. Mercy, Dusty can be soooo LOUD, I’ve decided to call him Rooster, cuz this is what he does everyday at 6 a.m.! And also the other times. He’s my 4th Cav, but I’ve had many other breeds over the years. I trained my Boston, to do all sorts of things when I was just 10. I’ve had 3 Bostons, and I guess they can spoil you. Oh well! Back to the books, so to speak! Any suggestions? Be blest. ☦️👩🏻🦳🐾🐾

Would you recommend keeping the kennel/crate in one specific place in the house and not changing it? I’m wondering if my Boston is getting confused because I’ve moved it to multiple different places of the house.
Four more weeks if everything goes right that my boston terrier puppy will be coming home i wish there was an option to share a pic because id love to show you a pic
Your dogs are so cute. I have had 2 boston's. Warn people about a puppy wearing a collar in the crate. My niece had a puppy that hung itself at 10 weeks in the crate. It jumped and caught the collar on the crate. She was devastated.
Also....both my male and female as pups would tear up any bedding I put them in the crate with! I finally did not buy premade puppy beds but would just use sheets?!

My Boston took to his crate right away. He never cried once, which I can't say for my pug. After 7+ years, he still goes in there when he wants to gnaw on a toy or just get some alone time. We lock him in there when we go to work, but only because we can't trust him with our pug for long periods of time. Once in a while they get on each others' nerves and will fight a bit. She gets locked in the kitchen. Our crate is about the same size as yours. We have a nice thick, soft blanket for him, a water dish, and plenty of toys. He's pretty comfortable in there.
