    Helpful video, since I have my hands-on final coming up here on 12/16/17. Thank you for the video!

    Peak at 3:19 (use , and . on a computer to go frame by frame):
    798 Amps (no decimal point is shown)
    11.13 Volts
    8,881 Watts.
    Analog meter would be better.

    the amp clam needs the conductor center of the clamp 1:39, at 2:27 the jaw is biting the battery terminal which makes the readings invalid.

    to skip blah blah crap, jump to 3:18

    did the battery have a parasitic load? i saw 1-2amp on the meter before and after running the starter. maybe the key was on, or you have woke it up prior to clamping, also before the clamp was attached, the meter showed .5amps, obviously not important, but zeroing the meter should be part of the demo imo, just for the sake of chasing down parasitic load. i always try to understand why a batter is being replaced other than "Age", like most people do. good video though, thanks

    I’ve searched forums and they would say the surge current is like 250-300A then it settles down to something but it looks like it’s in the 700s range 😂 I don’t think it’s because the alternator has a problem. I have a lifepo battery I want to use but it can only accept 400 for 10s and they don’t specify anything for lower duration,

    I just tested the starter on my 2003 dodge cummins using a fluke 36 clamp meter.
    I showed 784 amps with a cold engine.
    Is this excessive?
    I thought yes but am not sure.
    I have been getting hard starts that sounded like low batteries

    in my experience 55 to 200 amp will be ok. more than that will be to high. GM starters pull up to 250 amps

    Just for curiosity.... What happens, if the engine starts?

    • @hrgwea
      @hrgwea 6 років тому +1

      If the engine starts and you don't turn off the starter, the flywheel is now powered by both the starter and the engine.
      But since the engine is much more powerful than the starter, the poor little starter is now being forced to spin much faster than it's supposed to, which would damage it if that happens for too long.

      @Hr Gwea - Nah, when the engine starts, the starter disengages because you stop cranking the key. When the engine is running, the display on your meter is no longer reading the starter amps because the starter is no longer engaged.

    So typical current draw is 100 to 150 amps.

    why is amp clamp on negative side?

      Alpha299 amperage flows in the entire circuit that’s why

      He is testing current draw of a Starter Motor and one of the places to test is from the negative terminal to the ground.

    WOW!! don't need all that, you can tell it's OK by the sound it makes, and by the fact that it would start right away;
    For your info, diesels draw 200 to 250 Amps,if all is ok; problem is when they do not start,AND they draw too little or too much current...

      its still good to see and understand the theory of operation, rather than chalking it up to the magic of electricity

    Need to do these things with equipment that standard people well have. How am I going to use this video to test my start. Well shit I think I'll need to go buy one of those machines just for this one job...?
    This vide is useless
