As a retired Barber, I agree with much of what is said here; however, I have a few recommendations. First, find an old school barber shop (not a Great Clips, etc...). See who is the most experienced barber in the shop. Wash your hair prior to your visit and DO NOT put any product in it. DO NOT wear a ball cap. Bring a picture of what kind of cut you desire. A good Barber will make recommendations based on your hair length, hair texture, etc... Part on the right side or left, cow licks and other factors dictate what may be the best style for you. If the Barber refuses to do a cut using shears, leave the shop. ALL Barbers are trained on shear and clipper cutting techniques. As far as hair product, determine how much hold, shine and expense you desire. If you cannot find the product you desire, many Barbers can order it for you through their Barber Supply connections. Hope this helps.
Same here. I’m also 56 years old and have had this hairstyle for over thirty years. When I travel, I wear a suit and tie. I use Sauvage cologne (By Dior) which gets me compliments. The hairstyle, suit and cologne does get one noticed. 👍🏽
Immediatly after watching this video I went to the barber and asked for this hairstyle. Now it's been a few days that I'm overwhelmed with compliments from my friends and colleagues. If it wasn't for your video I'd never thought of actually trying this hairstyle, I look more professional and well put together. Thank you for your work!
I'm flattered to read this comment, but most of all overjoyed that you are enjoying your new hairstyle. It's known by barbers as the 'gentleman's haircut' for a reason. James
Have had the classic side part for the last five years and I can say that it has been an absolute game changer. The level of self-confidence and class that I feel with his hairstyle is unmatched. I highly recommend any man to try it.
Tried the Oil based Suavecito and I must say that it is the BEST POMADE I have ever, ever used. It holds my hair well, gives it shine and a quick comb through will immediately correct any tousled hair back in place. Five stars!
I have that haircut (long top and sides). I don't have it clipper cut on the sides. I style it straight back most of the time but sometime venture to a side part--either side. It is a classic look and definitely my favorite style.
I only finally gave up my fade like a year ago, at the age of 44 lol. Go for it! You will never go back. You will feel less like a kid and more like a man
A good way to modernize that haircut is to do everything James said, but use clippers to buzz down the sides. Either with a standard taper or a fade. You’ll still have the slick, neat hair on top, but the haircut will look more modern and youthful.
@@btudor_06 this sounds like somebody trying to personalize the look to suit their personal style. That’s a good thing, whether or not it’s what you or I would necessarily do
@@btudor_06 Just saw your reply on a review of the video. My comment was just for people who wanted to put a modern spin on it, not a correction on the video. Settle down.
Being that I have African American hair, I have never been able to achieve hairstyles like this. Up until afew months ago I had been growing out my hair for 6 years and settled on dreadlocks for 3 years. I decided to cut it due to leading a more classy life and the dreads just made me look unkempt and dirty. So I have settled on a low cut and gel my hair to achieve the "slick" look. As a result I have been regarded in a better light.
You're not alone. Unfortunately UA-cam is oversaturated with the side part hair style tutorial, leaving those with 3c or 4c hair out of the loop. 360 waves with faded sides is probably the best Black equivalent to the side part "slick side parted" hair. Hope this helps.
Can I ask what hairstyle you went for? I find it a bit challenging to find the equivalent hairstyle of this style for people 4c kinky hair, which most black people have.
I agree with everything being said with one exception. You can use a water based pomade. I use it and it works for me. I watched a “behind the scenes” episode of “Mad Men” and it was revealed the hairstylist used “American Crew” pomade which is water based. You have to put a little more in your hair but it does work and it’s easy to wash out.
Absolutely. You can get high-quality water-based pomades these days with all kinds of finishes, from mat to super shiny. No reason to use that greasy oily stuff that never rinses out

I did a side part for ages and now that I’m 30, my hair is starting to thin and recede so I have changed up my hairstyle a bit. I used Murray’s and Tres Flores Brilliantine together. In fact, I would recommend Tres Flores as a topper in addition to whatever product you choose. It gives that final touch of a hold and it smells classic. Pro tip with the Murray’s pomade, leave it on the burner for a few minutes. It’s easier to spread evenly haha
This is such a good video. I have tried this style in the past, and didn’t quite get it right. In going to let my hair grow out a bit and make another attempt soon.
I would recommend Kent Handmade Sawcut combs, they make a full range of combs to fit your styling needs. I use Reuzel or Lockhart's Pomade then, there is Brylcreem for when I want a lighter hold with a higher shine.
I have medium to tight natural curly hair. I am an anomaly beyond anomaly. This style actually is my favorite hair style. And actually, the only hair style that works with my hair. Good one!!!

I've been rocking a classic side part for about 5 years now. Love it. Regarding product; I've used Murray's superior pomade the longest. It works great, but I hate the residual oil left behind after applying to your hair. I could never get it completely off, even using dish soap specifically meant for grease. It would then get all over my phone, steering wheel, and keyboard. It's to the point where I'm trying out water based products now, just to avoid it. Just thought I'd share in case anyone is curious about oil based pomades.
Hello. I recently got this hairstyle, and I have been amazed at the positive statements said about it. And not just for one or two days, people really like it. I did have to modify it a little, however. I work in a hospital, so having a hairstyle with a high shine does not work for my environment, so I use American Crew defining paste to hold the hair, and people say my hair still has a little shine. Also, I think you were a bit mean about Pete Campbell. My head shape is oval to a bit rounder, and I find it a lot easier to find a natural part on the right side of my face, which means my hair looks more like Pete Campbell than Don Draper. And I am still getting more compliments on my hair than I did before! Thanks for posting this video. I was on the fence about getting a much shorter hairstyle (before it was basically a bro flow) but this new style looks like one I will keep.
My hairstyle's pretty close to the Old Hollywood look as described, minus the scissors only cut and oil based pomade (i've been using Old Spice's pomade that is probably water based). It's an easy cut for a quick formal appearance and it gets compliments!
With your debonair style, features and accent you remind me a little bit of a Rick Astley. He was classy when class wasn’t in and still made a name for himself. So this is a compliment.
@@Gent.Z Yes I remember as a kid watching him on MTV. He was unlike any other artist and I thought he was so cool. Still do. It just shows you that classic style is always in style.

Yup. My morning routine: wash hair while in shower. Towel dry my hair leaving it a bit damp. Run pomade through my hair. Comb all my hair back, like a slick-back, then perform the side part. Slicking it all back first just gives it a sleeker look, and as you make that part, tends to result in more volume for whatever reason. The only thing is, I much prefer water-based pomade. You can buy quality stuff that still holds up really well all day and easily rinses out in the shower

Important detail: if you have a longer face/head shape like I do, the more your part needs to be over and closer to your ears as far as reasonably possible. Look at the Cary Grant pics in this video to see how far over he pushes this part to his ears- it is not over his eyes like many do. You also want the top of your hair to be as low as possible as any poofed-up height makes your face look even more long and narrow. The wider your face, the higher you can go. The longer your face, the shorter it must be. Though Mr. Gent Z's hairstyle works well here as is, I'd suggest he might try moving his part even a tiny bit closer to his ears and less over his eyes....with a touch less height as he has a slightly longer face too. Lucky for him he is more oval than oblong like me. One last trick you can use is to never cut the sides too short. If you can see your scalp anywhere on the sides, it is way too short. The more full the sides are, the less narrow your head looks obviously. Google a pic of George Peppard in Breakfast at Tiffany's. He nails this side length along with the rest. Style must always follow your genetics and never the other way around. No matter how amazing something looks on someone else, it may look quite off on you! A lesson l wish I learned much earlier in life.

I'm here to say this. I follow all the gentlemen UA-cam channel, and the one common problem I run into are the hairstyle videos. I'm a man of color and none of these work for me. It'd be nice to have a little more representation. Also the assumption that Barbers blaring rap music don't know how to scissor cut is very prejudiced. The barber shop I go to are very good at scissor cuts. That comment is making me rethink being a subscriber to the channel
What a weird thing to comment. Why complain about representation on a single guy UA-cam channel? Not every production on the internet must aspire to completeness and, most primarily, Gent Z is not a corporation.
Straight back and I look like Tony Soprano without the size or presence. It parts equally well on either side though a left part seems to be uneven. No matter what, I have the 'solar panel for a sex machine' at the back. I had fine blonde hair when I was younger, now I have what I refer to as 'arctic blonde', lol.

How do we carry ourselves and behave around people without being viewed as a snob and with being warm
Easy...you will gradually attract people in your life who won't see you this way. So be yourself with abandon. Life is a self cleaning oven that way.
Not going to lie. I felt a little left out on this one. No mention of my personal style guide: Yul Brynner!! 🤣
Yes your hairstyle does suit you.
Can anyone name the hairstyle worn by Al Pacino in "The Scent of a Woman" ?!?
my hair is too wavily how can I get it?
I'm bald so just clippers for me.
A man can have a beautiful, and well put together suit, yet can have their outfit tainted by bad hair.
German ww2 hairstyle is the best.
A vampire that uses product. No.
Your missing William Powel slightly off-center What's better than The Thin Man series
You know that a real man doesn’t give two shits about a special haircut. Again, with DON Draper. Christ.
Too short for me. Especially for my hairline. I also have naturaly wavy hair wich is pain for every classic haircut.
Consider links that aren't Amazon. I will never shop on Amazon
+1
I've noticed these days not many barbers/stylists cut hair with scissors, seems to be a lost art, pity.
Should a gentleman grow a beard? It seems like it's necessary for me because I'm bald :/
Yes, a man should grow a beard and you need to keep it properly groomed at all times.
What happens if you are a baldcel ?
If you’re so persistant on being clasically masculine you need to change your facial expressions, no more duck lips
The best representation would be you, starting a channel that contains the content you would like to see.
What a weird thing to comment. Why complain about representation on a single guy UA-cam channel? Not every production on the internet must aspire to completeness and, most primarily, Gent Z is not a corporation.
@@aeiou2085lmao so wanting a few examples of gentlemen hairstyles for my hair is an issue? What a weird thing to comment.
@@sammajor2075agreed.
This hairstyle is a good look, but not in combination with your unkempt facial hair. None of the men in your examples have a patchy curved moustache.
WOW, nasty comment on your part. Who are you to criticize? He looks amazing.
The style misses with facial hair. IMO. One looks half groomed.
Murray’s can be found at winco and other similar establishments.
