Wow... if only I could travel back in time to 1987 and visit Alton back then! Alton Towers has changed so much between when this video was made and today (about 3 decades). What it might look like in another 3 decades is anybody's guess...
So much better and more to do then. Now all the shops and exhibits are closed and are just facades. Most of the entertainment is gone but the ride queue times have tripled. Fascinating vid, just goes to show how things don't always change for the better
Unpopular opinion: New Alton is much more better, as it still does have its ‘ entertainment’ with many rides and also you can still walk through the gardens, the old Alton would have still have gotten aged even if they didn’t change it, as who these days would like to walk around in ‘boutiques’ only adults, and now because they have changed it now that means they get more money of the kids and teens and I feel the old one is just like a posh Disney but without any entertainment!! 😂
01:08 Sweetheart you have a nice thick North Staffordshire accent there, why are you trying to cover it up with a Standard accent? 'We are now approachEEN' the grand canyon rapEEDS'
Just a sign of the times mate. There was a belief back then that all accents would become standardised, and there was more of a negative stereotype associated with having an accent. You can hear it with old business people who often talk in a phoney posh accent if they come from somewhere like Stoke with a distinct patter.
It was better then. Too gimicky these days and you're always rushed because of the queuing times. Back then you could take your time, have a meal in the restaurant and explore the gardens. It really was unique back then. I also think it was a travesty they got rid of Doom & Sons funeral parlour and replaced it with that silly ghost train which is now even worse with the addition of laser guns.
Agreed. It is far too commercial now. Everything in-your-face to make as much money as possible. Such a shame they sold out. Ever since Merlin took over it has gone downhill.
Man, I remember Doom & Sons funeral parlour, I walked through it in 1992 on my first ever visit and thought it was awesome. Every subsequent year I tried to find it but never could.
Maybe to you it has gone downhill, but to thrill seekers and theme park enthusiasts it certainly hasn't. It's nice to see Alton Towers keeping up with the times. The 1987 version just wouldn't be as popular nowadays.
Fascinating stuff. The gardener mentioned at 5:05, who was there in 1924, was my grandad.

Indeed. Think the only ride that was there then and still is, is the pirate ship. Oh and the Congo Raps
I went there that year 87 i was 16 i been there since 92 and 2000 i haven't been back but I will even if i go by myself
before the hotels and all that. I remember it around this time.
The golden years.
It's nothing like this now sadly.

Bring back the bears and street entertainers to towers street its so quiet these days the bears were great
They've added new Alton towers police for this season.
i remember in side the carlisle there was a large model train set it was wonderful to watch Alton Towers is a wonderful place
it wasnt a train ser it was a model railway..........BIG DIFFERENCE !
Before the Runaway Mine Train, Oblivion, Air, and even Nemesis. Alton Towers looks like this before the 90’s made a huge impact on it.
How wonderful! The circus would be great if it was still there
Corkscrew still looking rough as ever there.
Great video xxx
@mathowlett so did I - we're showing our age now! I remember all these rides x
Look how good the rapids used to be 😭
Cool
Thanks Carmen :)

3:26 "where thrill-seekers are temporarily parted from their stomachs". Spoken in a matter-of-fact way. Hilarious.

I hate when the best is taken out and replaced with something useless. That happens at Disney all the time.
