Alton Towers - Shortest Queues of the Year?
Переглядів 2,8 тис.5 місяців тому
I visited Alton Towers on 25/04/2024 and I reckon that this has to be one of the very quietest days of the year. It appears that visiting just after the Easter holidays is now one of the best times to visit. I also spot a bit of preparation work for the new Project ocean ride in Forbidden Valley and show you my newly purchased heritage related keyring :)

I went along to Drayton Manor theme park on the opening day of 'The Wave' rollercoaster (26/4/2024) to see what was going on. I also have a general look around the park to see what's changed since my last visit years ago. I also have a sneak peek at construction of the new rollercoaster that is opening later this year. Enjoy :)
Exploring Cuckoo Arbour at Alton Towers
Переглядів 8255 місяців тому
Join me as I go for a walk to the somewhat mysterious Cuckoo Arbour folly in the gardens at Alton Towers. Most probably built in the early to mid 1800s to amuse guests who would be walking the grounds for pleasure during that period and beyond. This is off the beaten track but at no point do you need to go past any 'no entry' points or closed gates. It is in a very isolated spot though, so a lo...
The Lost Glasshouses of Alton Towers
Переглядів 9416 місяців тому
Here I look at several missing conservatories or glasshouses from the Alton Towers estate which were likely present during the 1800s, but have all but vanished in our modern day. Some were in the gardens and some were in what is the modern day theme park. A very niche subject, I accept! I will use old and new maps, old images and will explore on the ground. I had been meaning to do this video f...

Alton Towers Ruins Walkthrough 2024 - West Wing
Переглядів 10 тис.6 місяців тому
Join me as I have a little look around the VERY RARELY seen West Wing part of the ruins at Alton Towers. Actually, it apparently wasn't even supposed to be open as myself along with other guests were asked to leave the house after a while as staff had mistakenly accidentally not cordened off access (you can see that I occasionally come across other random strangers inside). It was great to have...

After what happened just tonight at Hex , I can't see it reopening anytime soon
Oh haha we did nearly meet that’s me with the Legoland bag at 2:23
Oh yeah, well now your visit has been recorded for posterity 😀
@@AltonTowersMemories Haha yes, captured forever, my determined stomp into Hex :D Also, similarly appalled at the state of the canal. We did the heritage tour in July and I didn’t even recognise it at first. The frustrating thing is, if they kept on top of it, it wouldn’t be a massively labour intensive/costly job.
@@carlyemms Yeah, totally agree. The problem is simply a lack of staff in the gardens. They want to do everything but there's just not enough of them. I don't think they can leave the canal for another year though, it needs to be done this closed season to some extent.
@@AltonTowersMemories Yeah that’s a real shame for the dedicated gardeners they do have, it must be so frustrating for them. Makes me want to grab a pair of waders and get it done 😅
@@carlyemms 😂😂😂
Aw i love Hex, always a bit of fun without a huge queue. I thought they might have done something a bit different with the reopening but i suppose its good as it is!
Yeah, it hasn't really changed that much. Just a few little extra touches to polish it up a bit really (and fixing the major problem that forced it to keep closing). Still a good fun ride :)
@@AltonTowersMemories such a shame about the lower part of the gardens looking a bit neglected, I wonder if they're leaving it till spring now 🤔
@@Jordan_Starr It does happen quite often that you come back when the theme park opens again in late march and they've done a fair bit of work, so it's certainly possible. It's well due! They don't do it every year though from memory. Think it's been 2-3 years since the canal was last sorted out.
Excellent video again. Loving the content.
Thanks buddy, you're very kind! Glad you enjoyed it, Adam 😃
Just wanted to say thanks as we managed to find it today and whilst it was very overgrown now, it was magic to see it.
That's brill, thanks for letting me know. Feels weird to be detached from the theme park whilst you're still in the grounds doesn't it? I know what you mean about being overgrown too, I was co-incidentally exploring the other side of the valley (Rock Walk) yesterday and that was all overgrown too. Best time of theme park season to explore is probably late march or something like that from memory. Adam :)
@@AltonTowersMemories Think my reply disappeared but was just saying if I’d known you were around yesterday would have loved to have said hello. How did the Rock Walk go? We considered attempting it but since I’d already lost my foot down a hole once on the way to Cuckoo Arbour we thought we’d quit whilst ahead! Look forward to more content from you next season as a historian who appreciates your evident years of extensive research on the Towers. Carly :)
@@carlyemms Thanks. Yeah, the Rock Walk went okay. Overgrown quite a bit but I got to the end of the track I wanted to. Will be putting a video out of it in 3-4 weeks or something like that. I hadn't been to Towers for a few months so it's a co-incidence that we were exploring at the same time on opposite sides of the valley 😃
@@AltonTowersMemories Oh I’m being a wally I was thinking of the Step Walk. The Rock Walk will be super interesting too though. Yes it is funny we both had similar ideas at the same time! We did Hex (half for the ride and half because I love the Octagon) and then disappeared off for our adventure. Then collapsed in a heap with our lunch!
@@carlyemms Same. I went and had a look at the Hex reopening and then had a ride on that, then went exploring. Good fun to mix it up with a bit of modern and a bit of old stuff. And yeah, it's good just to be inside the armoury, picture gallery and octagon when going on Hex. I completely get that 🙂👍
When was it built? What was it for etc?
Probably in the mid 1800s, for an interesting area to look at for visitors. It was the fashion back then to have a circuit for your visitors to walk around on your estate and find things to excite them and remind them of other places. These bits have been long forgotten by the modern owners...
I wish the entrance stayed the same instead of just a bunch of tents
Yeah, it looks awful now. They could do with something more permanent 👍
Great information - thanks. 😊
You're very welcome. Glad you found it interesting. Adam 🙂👍
Amazing video!
Thanks, much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it, and hopefully learned a couple of new things. Adam 🙂👍
Any video that showcases the village where I live gets a thumbs up but this was exceptional. I was at the open day too, me and my missus had a brief cameo in your video. I've mentioned before on your other videos that my Grandad was a potter at Alton Towers. I don't know if you noticed but there was a guy with a potters wheel offering a have a go at throwing a pot. I went to have a look and he said are you having a go? I said I'm OK thanks, I've not done it in years. He said oh you've done it before then? I said yeah when I was a kid. My Grandad was the potter at the Towers. He looked at me and said Albert? I said yeah. He then stepped a bit closer and said your Grandad taught me to throw. I had to have a go after that didn't I....I didn't do my Grandad proud 😢
Haha, nevermind. I saw the potter and wondered if there might be some loose connection to the potters at the Towers, as you don't really see that much nowadays, and thanks to your comment it turns out that there was! Thanks again for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Adam :)
Alton Village is such an underrated gem, so many people just drive through it and don’t think twice about it
Definitely! Great for exploring with plenty to see. Thanks for watching 🙂
Excellent video. Interesting to see inside Alton Castle. I intend to do a walking video around the area at some point.
You're very welcome. There's plenty of interest to see around the area so you will not be short of sights for your video. Thanks for watching, Adam 🙂
At 28:49 you can see an old stone archway underneath the church with shrubbery growing out of it. I wonder that was? Im guessing it would have been part of the moat / fosse potentially? But why would it lead under the church? 🤔 Gorgeous views from the roof! It looks like that rose window is boarded up or covered somehow from the inside which seems a shame.
Oh yeah, that's interesting. Maybe it would have held a religious statue or something, to be viewed from the castle windows? No idea in all honesty. Maybe someone will come along with more knowledge and let us know in the next several years haha! That is an interesting place for an arch like that. Hmmmm 🙂🤔👍
Why was everything knocked down/ removed - after the army gunner school had been there, ww2?
Answered your similar question in the comments on the other video, but basically businessmen stripped the place and sold fittings to recoup money that they paid to buy the estate c1950s.
What happened to all it's internals ? I know Army gunners were there during WW2 and I visited in 89, kids went on amusements, I got stuck in the house and was well fascinated. Churnet Valley railway pounding up past.... There was a massive stone fireplace in situ... Why was it stripped out, it's only Victorian after all...
The place was stripped of all the wood panelling, lead from the roofs etc during the 1950s by some businessmen who bought the place. With the lead gone from the roofs it was no longer weather sealed and so was subjected to water damage etc. That was the end of it basically and the floors etc were no longer safe. A fire was even started in one part of the house which obviously didn't help either!
Was closed went I went three weeks ago
Yes, they don't open them any more. Only for paid tours occasionally. Prices are around £10 I think, but you don't get to see that much of the house. You won't see the West Wing that's in this video. Adam :)
i remember crying so much on that day cause i couldn't go despite being told i would that my mum had to book to go the week after 😭
That's a shame! I wouldn't have been happy either. At least you got their eventually though :)
@@AltonTowersMemories true, i've been on Reborn 3 times now and am going at the end of this month and for scarefest

Props to this guy for filming the run from the entrance to Nemesis lol
Cheers pal. It's gotta be done 😃
Such a shame they do not try a restore it
i forgot how popular this coaster was. you literally couldn't go a day in 2013 without being DROWNED in advertising😭
same thing is happening with Nemesis Reborn, even after being open for 6 months you still see it plastered everywhere
Nemesis is my favourite coaster and I can't wait to get back on it at the end of the month. Even after riding Hyperia I feel Nemesis Reborn will remain at the top spot.
Nemesis has always been my favourite, but I went on Hyperia on opening day and I'm not so sure now...... 😀
@@AltonTowersMemories it is really close. Both are fantastic coasters!🦀🪽
2:15 lol they counted down and rushed in without paying
I saw u today I was at the front of the queue
Hope you had a good day :)
Like the very front
Me watching a video about a rollercoaster that I’ll know I won’t ride as I’ll bottle it when I get to the front of the queue 🤣😂
The queue goes on and on! I thought you never would get to the house!
I know yeah, haha. I thought it was worth filming as we had the honour of being led by the actor guy as we were the first to get there. And no doubt in years to come they'll probably shut off the extended queueline again. Thanks for watching, Adam :)
is this the normal and disable express parking? ill be getting a ticket just wondering where it was... what happens if you pay but the car park is full? lol
Yeah, this is the normal Express parking which is right next to the main entrance. I think they limit the amount of Express parking tickets so it shouldn't be over-booked, in theory.
I’ve only been to Alton Towers once and I thought it was a real shame that a historic property was in essence just a dumping ground for theme park stuff. It feels like an insult to history. Such a great tour of the place though. Just a shadow of itself with the decay being the haunted aspect. Thank you for uploading this! 😊
You're very welcome! I'm glad that you found it interesting, Adam :)
I’m glad I didn’t go on opening day tbf my first day this season was last Saturday but it I was there on opening day with everyone charging It Would’ve set my autism crazy and I’d have a massively over sensitized
Yeah, it can be a bit crazy on an opening day like this. I'm glad that my video got that atmosphere across so that it gives people an idea of what it's like sometimes. Thanks for watching my vid :)
brings back every memory that a video fottage can bring everything is like the way it was when i went there back in 1986 with school trip i was about 11/12 (born 13/09/74)
Really enjoyed watching, thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks, Adam :)
such a huge shame they close the towers off for scare mazes. yeah im sure the halloween event is amazing but id rather be able to look around the ruins
I wish more was known about the Talbot Hound, seeing the heraldry reminded me of their disappearance. All that said, this is a lovely walk through, and a view into the lives of some of my distant cousins. My ancestor Talbot added a T to the end of his name, and left the Irish Malahide Talbot’s in the 1600s, during the Cromwell Miseries. He became quite a prosperous farmer in Maryland colony, and was also a Quaker, interestingly enough. Thank you for the video!
You're welcome, thank you :)
Thank you for this fantastic video. How fascinating .❤
You're very welcome. Thanks again, Adam :)

Absolutely loving your videos. My husband and I both l adore Alton Towers and it’s the history of the place that really makes it so special. I can tell this has been a life long interest for you too! Can’t wait to see more.
That's very kind, I'm glad you are enjoying the vids! Yeah, it has been a bit of a life long thing for me, since being a kid. I love the history of the place. It's really nice to know that others appreciate the videos and the history, so thanks a lot for your lovely comment, and for watching. Much appreciated, Adam :)
If they can’t take care of it and make use of it the building should be compulsory purchased and made into a separate attraction.
Cuckoo Arbour is beautiful. Been around 5 times in the last 8 years. I love how unknown it is to thoosies, making it very untouched.
Yeah, I love this as it's nice and hidden away. Not much documentary evidence about it either so it's a bit of a mystery :)
2:44 ayyy I see me!
Great ride I thought. Shame it's broken now...
@@AltonTowersMemories was speechless. Feel gutted for anyone who was there today.
@@HarryBoSweets Yeah, it wouldn't be so bad if it was a rubbish ride, but they've waited so long for a genuinely brilliant ride and then now it breaks after one day. The staff must be gutted after all the work that's gone into it too.
The tunnels under Lordsbridge are almost certainly flood tunnels. In high flood the water pressure against the embankment will not build up instead flow through the tunnels. Three on Farley side, two on the Alton side.
That's amazing, thanks for that. I'll remember that for future reference. Good knowledge, thank you. Adam :)
I've only just discovered your channel. You've earned another subscriber. This was a very interesting video. I saw the chained oak when it was in better shape.
Thanks for that, very much appreciated. I'm glad you found the video interesting and that you got to see the tree before it had collapsed somewhat. It's not looking too great these days! All the best, Adam :)
Interesting video. I've only been to Alton Towers and that was in the very late 70s, before the roller coasters and when the main attraction was the gardens. I also remember going to a planetarium. At that time you were free to explore the shell of the building but I can't remember how much was accessible.
Yes, I think that was pretty much around the time they first opened the Towers ruins for people to explore. The Planetarium was probably very new too. Thanks :)
I like that music from your video in background. Thanks Adam 3:51

Great video. Really enjoyed watching this. I used to live in Alton. I remember the 1 mile mark in Dimmingsdale being there somewhere around 2000 to 2002, and then one day, it just wasn't there anymore so likely stolen. With regard to the chained oak. I have also witnessed to destruction of this over the years. IMO AT have an obligation to take measures to preserve what remains. This should have been done years ago!
Wow, that's really interesting about the 1 mile milestone. I had no idea when that went missing (as I said in the video). Annoying that someone would steal something like that! I would agree about the Chained Oak too, although we're getting to the point that there's not much left to save. Thanks for replying with that info, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Adam :)
I used to live in Cheadle and always wondered this having explored the part near Chained oak and hearing that land in Cheadle once used to be owned by the estate. Another great video!
Thanks mate. I had always been a bit curious myself as to even if it was possible to walk the full length of it these days. As you can see from the video, I went to find out :)
This is such a fabulous video! My Grandparents used to own the Towers and my Aunt and Uncle lived in the house above the Chained Oak. I even remember when George Noakes (the Towers Gardner and alleged son of the King!)) lived at Pink Lodge, when I was small child! It's absolutely heartbreaking what's happened to the Chained Oak - I had no idea! As soon as the new owners built Hex (in my Grandmother's old gift-shop) I had a horrible feeling this would happen. It was much better (for everyone) when it was a legend and only real enthusiasts and locals knew it's location on Barbary Gutter. Anyway, thanks for your amazing video - brings back so many memories from my childhood! Please do more of the other drives!
Thanks for that! Were your grandparents from the Bagshaw family? Do you have any old photos haha? Very interesting, thanks for sharing :)
@@AltonTowersMemories Yes, Dennis and Sheila Bagshaw. I'll see what I can dig out and will send...
@@littlevictorieswillyb1897 Wow, how interesting. Nice playground for a youngster! Thanks for your reply, Adam :)
Really enjoyed this film Adam. Great to discover Counslow Lodge. How lucky are we that Ramblers saved that lodge... Still don't quite get the concept of the Pink Lodge... why would the Earls, who presumably own most of the land around Towers too, have a road cross his drive!? LOL Agree with you regarding the Chained Oak too. I first saw the oak in 1999, and it was truly forbodding, scary even (and I thought that the actual legend was that a beggar went into the Armoury during a dinner and begged for money).
Thanks Kevin! Only thing I can think is that Farley Lane was there before the Pink Lodge. I havn't checked that out actually. Will try to find out if there are any maps old enough that are available. And yeah, I've heard the one about the beggar being at the Towers too, but not sure which one actually came first. You don't hear of that one very often any more. Thanks again, Adam :)
Your videos are incredible. Thank you. There is so much more than I could have ever imagined, & you’re documenting it. Legend.
I really appreciate that, thanks so much! I'll try to keep it up. Adam :)
