7:50 I miss being able to activate the flashlight with a chop-chop from back a few years ago when I had a Moto.😢 I believe the feature is simply using the accelerometer and surprised than no other OEMs copied it
For others to know, there is a special bar code that should be scanned by an employee (should be one that works in electronics) to be able to activate the phone
yep, I use to work for Dollar General as a 2nd job, if they don't scan that barcode it won't even let you buy the phone in store. Also years back I was on Net10, and bought an LG 900G phone from Best Buy's website before Android phones where cheap, & Net10 allowed BYOD, but a slackoff at the warehouse forgot to scan that barcode before shipping it, so I called the Best Buy store in my area, and they said they could not help me because it was done online, & I could return it, but none were left in stock, so I ended up spending almost 8 hours on the phone, and having to borrow a fax machine to send proof to their indian office that I bought the damn thing, and did not steal it, along with putting in strings of really really long codes spoken by the indian dude to get it activated. So yeah always make sure they scan the damn barcode!!!
Those phones are great. They’re only $130 unlocked. I’m always getting those for my parents. They can do WhatsApp and read the news with no issues, which is pretty much everything they do with a phone anyway. No need to waste a bunch of money on more expensive phones.
I'm curious. How is the call quality? I suspect that's why people (especially people on the go or roughing it) might buy a phone like yours. They just want to use it to make calls. And if they lose it or break it, no biggie, just go back to wallyworld and get another. 🙂
Motorola actually makes really good budget phones with no bloatware or anything sketchy, I owned a Motorola e40 for 4 years and it never disappointed me:)
I've owned several Motorola Android phones over the years, and my biggest issues with them is the lack of updates, they should support their phones for longer than a year, or 2, they should support them for at least 5 years to reduce e-waste, and keep their customers happier.
@@SR-72_DARKSTAR This has nothing to do with gaming whatsoever, I'm talking basic things like Android OS, and security updates, Motorola is even bad about it on their flagship Razr series with those being expensive AF, and as I said it should be 5 years minimum from day of release across all their phones, & there should be no excuse when a company like HDM(Nokia) can do it with their phones, and tablets providing longer updates than Motorola does for around the same prices as Motorola when you buy an unlocked version, and Google does it on their Pixel phones with the newest ones getting 7 years of updates.
@@CommodoreFan64 I guess yeah but like if you get a Moto G31 or G82 your still getting a great budget friendly smartphone at an affordable price with good specs, that's how it works if you want longer support you need to get a high end device which has a big company such as google, apple or samsung behind it. You can't put everything you want in a budget friendly device it has downsides such as lower processor, less camera support, less security and software updates, which just sucks.

i bought this phone but eith a different name (g04s) for 100$ in saudi arabia brand new in box and everything and i gotta say this is the best phone for the price, the best cpu, best gpu, best display, best camera and no bloatware (unlike the one in the video for some reasons). i use it as my main daily driver and i love it
These companies sell them at a loss, though locking them to a particular service. The continued use of the prepaid plan is supposed to pay it off and eventually turn a profit. That being said, it's a fairly low end device. Good enough for grandparents and people with low expectations, but not sufficient for any kind of power user.
For $40, it’s definitely a good deal. You can basically pay $200~$300 for something that i reckon would have similar features & specs as this one. The only thing is to try and unlock it so you could use it with other networks.
Go and enable developer options and then scroll down until you find the three settings for the animations and turn them all to 0. The phone should run a little bit quicker.
I mean for 40 dollars you get some okay specs, but a snapdragon 680 in it?? for a 680, it is perfectly decent for a low to mid range phone in 2024 + you got that phone for 40 dollars which is insane
I got this phone a few weeks ago and it's excellent for the price on everything except call quality. Often times I can't hear the person clearly and they can't hear me. Which is a huge shame because the design, performance, display, battery life and even the cameras for the price are surprisingly good. Since I need my phone to work as a phone first and foremost, that's a deal breaker for me. Side note, out of the box the reason the camera app likely crashed on you is it needed an update. Mine had one available during the setup process as soon as I opened the camera app.
I work on phone technologies. Some of these videos irritate me a lot because these reviewers have ZERO clue the amount of technologies that go into these phones and how many suppliers are involved. This $40 price includes subsidy from the carrier straight talk but even at full retail around $100, Moto is not making a lot of profit from this... or any of its suppliers for that matter. Stop picking on every little silly things.
There is a $30 one too. It works shockingly well. They are really nifty devices. Especially if you get them without a plan and use over wifi. Honestly the best deal you can get. Better than anything on eBay for this price.
You should play around with the phone and find out what other features are unique to Motorola. Like that 2 chops gesture thing you did turns the flashlight on and off
I got the 2023 mode for free, it’s got amazing battery lasts like 9 hours and even longer with it not doing wireless being off, it’s also durable, shortcomings are definitely its camera and screen but the refresh rate is pretty nice and the camera design is I say better than apples, the flashlight placement is so nice and the gestures that use the gyroscope are unlike anything I seen, Lenovo knows what they are doing, if only they got updates
i had one (from at&t) it was unlocked when gifted to me, it absolutely hated T mobile towers, i tried 5 T-mo different sims (T-mo direct, red pocket on T, textnow on T) and it would lose service bars after several minutes or hours, no amount of rebooting or APN adjustments would bring the bars back, only putting the sim in another phone for the day and back to the moto, rinse and repeat(not to jerry-rig it as a daily driver, but experimentally). i never figured it out despite making multiple reddit posts, eventually i got someone who thought it was probably bands lacking, since it was for AT. it worked steady for a few months somehow, then i had to retire it. worst christmas gift i've ever gotten.
I've owned several Motorola Android phones, and my only gripe with Motorola is software support, and updates, not updating them longer than a year, or 2, which is why I moved to a Pixel 6a, as I feel 5 years should be the minimum, even HDM aka Nokia does a better job at supporting their Android devices as I have a Nokia T20 tablet released in Oct 2021, & just a few days ago it got 2 major updates for security patches!!
I have an elderly co worker who got her first "smart phone" it's a Walmart phone called Blu I think and she managed to get the text to speech guidance mode on so I, being the only tech savvy person there had to painstakingly disable it, didn't help it was cheap and ran so slow.
I have had good experiences with budget phones, I had the a12 a few years ago and got the a14 most recently but for how cheap it is it has so many features that iphones don’t have, especially over the SE which is more than double the price 😂
Lie or not, this also doubles a good enough UA-cam movie video maker and satellite phone upgrade option. Even using a 512GB to 1TB SD card makes good enough UA-cam movie options I suggest.
I don't like Motorola doesn't put NFC on its cheaper phones like this one. Many stores now accept contactless pay (Apple Pay, Google Pay & Samsung Pay), so NFC is essential. I also don't like that Motorola only provides one major Android upgrade and 2 years of security patches. The phone isn't obsolete after it's 2 years old
It's not really essential if you have debit card. I have NFC but never use it. Is it so laborious to get your debit or credit card out of your wallet??
I actually bought this phone last month. For $40 it's great. There are things you can do to make it run way smoother. I love it. Does everything I need it to and you can actually game on it. I play Diablo Immortal, CSR 2, Honkai Star Rail, Injustice 2 and COD Mobile and this phone handles it all impressively
I used to swear by samsungs. Then i loved my essential ph1 phone. Now im all about Motorola. I grabbed a Motorola stylus g 5g for 50 bucks plus added a Samsung tab a9 plus 5g for 20.

Straight Talk is under the TracFone umbrella ( like Net 10 ). The service is outstanding and out-performs most all other carriers. Great video. Cheers!
It is literally the same as the other carriers. TracFone is an MVNO, as is Net10. TracFone uses those towers (Verizon, Spring, T-Mobile, AT&T). Every time I've used Tracfone-based service the service has been crap. I have to stick to two carriers I know work well in my area, apparently the Tracfones in my area are Verizon and Sprint because of the terrible service.
one of the $50 phones at walmart is the galaxy a03s and i used it for about a year and went through two of them cause i broke one i used it for watching videos and doordashing mostly and it was extremely slow even out of the box. i also played emulators on it. its not awful for running one app at a time. but trying to multitask / run doordash, spotify and gps tracking made it freeze most of the time. the camera and screen were both pretty bad but *usable* the cheap motorolas seem a lot nicer than the cheaper samsungs
Samsung is bloatware central on their budget phones, and they also cheap out on the specs, if you have to go ultra cheap get a Motorola G, or G Play series, as it's closer to stock Android with 1/2 decent specs, just know generally don't support their phones with software updates beyond a year, or 2.
@@Joe-ey7cu nooo i just meant doordashing while spotify and the tracking app are running in the background! i had a playlist so i wouldnt have to skip songs and stuff
I had to laugh when the dude finally comments that Straight Talk is making money off the service. Well, DUH, that has been the American mobile market for a long time. The question for this phone is when can you unlock it, or can you do this at all?
Only $40 dollar phones have headphone jacks? Better look closer. Samsung A15 - 5G also has one. And although far from top of the line it's not close to $40.
What sucks is it will not accept a sim card from Verizon or AT&T unless you buy a sim unlock code & costs the same as the phone. No wireless charging support & will not update to the next version of Android. No wireless Android Auto & it works only with the cord plugged in.
I have a 111$, phone that has four cameras, very good screen, it can not die for 2 days, fingerprint sensor, perfect speaker and it's a moto phone and a stylus
If you buy one of these prepaid phones at Target or Walmart online will they scan it for you to activate or will you have to still make the trip to the store?
Can I use it through wifi connection only out of the box without a sim card? Thinking of having this so I don't use my phone a lot for social media , youtube etc.
When you pulled out a Motorola, I wasn't at all surprised, I'm currently using a G5 Power 2023 edition, and it's a phone. No really, Lenovo now owns the brand, and like their comptuters, the low end is nothing special, but often a really killer deal. I actually had a version of the phone you tested back in 2018 where it was offered by Cricket under a different name (all their Motos have unique names) as a free phone. Much of the savings comes from using the same parts and software everywhere, that power button fingerprint reader? Same as mine. The Android on that device? The same bone stock Android with Motorola software to customize it. Bodies are usually plastic, basic screens, memory, processor and battery size are basically all that changes from one phone to another.
Now if you want a better prepaid phone the new Motorola g power 2024 has some decent specs it has 8gb of ram 128 of storage a 6.7 screen nfc and wireless charging
It's unfortunate these budget phones are all 6,5 inches. The main reason I got a high end Samsung is because there are no small options under 600$. Even that S23 is bigger than I'd like, but the small bezels make it just about usable.
having bought a pre-paid Motorola blackberry clone and used said phone for about 8 years from 2012 to 2020 it was a pretty good experience it wasn't very good online obviously due to only being 3G but it got the job done when I was growing up especially with its built in FM radio when I upgraded to my first smartphone a prepaid Samsung galaxy J7 crown it was a massive difference despite it being four years old in 2020 I still have that phone today funny enough I use it as a MP3 player although now I use a iPhone SE third gen on T-Mobile as my daily since straight talk keeps raising the price of their unlimited plans to the point of being higher then all three big wireless company's in short pre-paid is good for little kids and people who absolutely need a phone but otherwise always go for a carrier especially if you use a lot of mobile data

They introduced the FIRST MOBILE PHONE !!!!!!!
As someone who works for that company there’s some phones that straight talk has that have more features for a few dollars more
I totally would buy this to use as a secondary phone.
Drug dealers like $40 phones.
No need to waste a bunch of money on more expensive phones.
yea i was gonna say i didnt think they were usually $40
So you could get this, pay a $40 unlocking fee and still be $50 in.
If you think thats bloat then you dont know what bloat is
$40 And Has A 50MP Camera...That Alone Is Unbelievable...Quite Splendid
Lmfao that phone is better than the Samsung galaxy A11. I bought a few years back also from Walmart, straight talk, but I paid $100.
For $40 that's friggin disposable. That's crazy.
People that love the headphone jack be like. Holy shit. I'll buy this just for the headphone jack.
I GOT AN AD FOR WALMART WHEN I CLICKED THIS LOL! 😂😂
Me too
Sometimes Lower Priced Phones Have Surprisingly Premium Specs...
I have a $20 phone from Walmart. It does what I need it to. I'm not obsessed with phones.
I'm curious. How is the call quality? I suspect that's why people (especially people on the go or roughing it) might buy a phone like yours. They just want to use it to make calls.
And if they lose it or break it, no biggie, just go back to wallyworld and get another. 🙂
“There’s no way this thing runs android” …. What other OS would a $40 smartphone run?
those apps are not bloatware
Yes they are, especially the Moto folder. Manufacturers modifying an OS to have their stuff preinstalled is by definition bloatware
Only if you don't use it.
Anything outside apple is bloatware for these idiots😂
The selfie photo made me laugh 😆 It was a “I just woke up at 4am” type of expression.
@@CommodoreFan64 yeah I do agree but I guess that's one of the downsides of buying Motorola phones, they aren't made for games or other fun stuff.
6:54 Motorola does have Good Stereo Audio Quality, but you can't compare the Motorola G Play to an iPhone....
Being Louder doesn't mean it has better Audio "Quality".....
I would say it's more of a $149 phone, but still a lot for your money. I'm guessing the phone network will make its money back with the sim card.
wow, if i hear 40.00 one more time, im going to rob my own wallet and make myself 40.00 😂
2:11 i was waiting for the crack 😂😂😂 but there wasn't
2:48 have you ever bought a Motorola phone before or heard about it? I got one and it is excellent for me but 40 that's actually decent ! Plus moto app has all the exclusives for your phone like ex. shake for flashlight and more and it is not bloatware
Walmart phone: 40$
Iphone 15: 40$
Apple logo: 760$
😂
i bought this phone but eith a different name (g04s) for 100$ in saudi arabia brand new in box and everything and i gotta say this is the best phone for the price, the best cpu, best gpu, best display, best camera and no bloatware (unlike the one in the video for some reasons). i use it as my main daily driver and i love it
Where is jacob... WHERE IS JACOB, you kidnapped him?💀
These companies sell them at a loss, though locking them to a particular service. The continued use of the prepaid plan is supposed to pay it off and eventually turn a profit.
That being said, it's a fairly low end device. Good enough for grandparents and people with low expectations, but not sufficient for any kind of power user.
Walmart pays approximately $10 per unit turns around selling for forty a unit. Do the math.
Profit. Yummy. Profit is good.
My phone cost $99 dollars (discounted) and serves me well even 3 years later.
I had the Moto G Play (2021) and it was an awesome phone. One of the best smartphones I've ever had.
i had one (from at&t) it was unlocked when gifted to me, it absolutely hated T mobile towers, i tried 5 T-mo different sims (T-mo direct, red pocket on T, textnow on T) and it would lose service bars after several minutes or hours, no amount of rebooting or APN adjustments would bring the bars back, only putting the sim in another phone for the day and back to the moto, rinse and repeat(not to jerry-rig it as a daily driver, but experimentally). i never figured it out despite making multiple reddit posts, eventually i got someone who thought it was probably bands lacking, since it was for AT.
it worked steady for a few months somehow, then i had to retire it.
worst christmas gift i've ever gotten.
Motorola knows how to make good cheap phones for sure.
@@Opethfeldt yep. Had problems with some troublesome Samsungs, but never with the Motos
Bro this is a phone that costs half the price of the first gen apple pencil
I have had good experiences with budget phones, I had the a12 a few years ago and got the a14 most recently but for how cheap it is it has so many features that iphones don’t have, especially over the SE which is more than double the price 😂
Reviewing android phone doesn’t believe it will have android lol is he new lol
would you say this is a fine phone for a second phone for android games (with mods and stuff)
I have a Moto G Play from 2021 as my only phone, and I can say that it's still good after about 4 years
I used to swear by samsungs. Then i loved my essential ph1 phone. Now im all about Motorola. I grabbed a Motorola stylus g 5g for 50 bucks plus added a Samsung tab a9 plus 5g for 20.
That's a 2024 Moto g play ,,,and all moto phones have moto actions ,,,u double chop to activate the flashlight u can twist ur wrist to activate the camera ❤️😅
this phone is so cheap that i can afford it from my Moneybox money of 1 year :D
And yet people still pay over a grand for a new iPhone every year or two.
Straight Talk is under the TracFone umbrella ( like Net 10 ). The service is outstanding and out-performs most all other carriers. Great video. Cheers!
And Several Others...
It users many of the same towers other carriers do + it is TERRIBLE in rural areas.
Moto apps are not really bloatware. They can be very handy apps.
one of the $50 phones at walmart is the galaxy a03s and i used it for about a year and went through two of them cause i broke one
i used it for watching videos and doordashing mostly and it was extremely slow even out of the box. i also played emulators on it.
its not awful for running one app at a time. but trying to multitask / run doordash, spotify and gps tracking made it freeze most of the time. the camera and screen were both pretty bad but *usable*
the cheap motorolas seem a lot nicer than the cheaper samsungs
samsung is quite bloated, because features such as dual apps and samsung has its own app store. That's why it feel sluggish if you buy them cheap
Samsung is bloatware central on their budget phones, and they also cheap out on the specs, if you have to go ultra cheap get a Motorola G, or G Play series, as it's closer to stock Android with 1/2 decent specs, just know generally don't support their phones with software updates beyond a year, or 2.
It's bc it maybe got an incompatible android update
@@emyliafoxy multitask? I hope you didn't multitask while driving.
Punch hole on $40 phone? That’s pretty sick! Shame on those modern, pricey phones that still comes with that ugly notches.
Btw is it usb-c?
try to film an entire video with that phone
I have a Motorola phone running android 12 and if you charge it and let it sit it will last longer than 2 weeks. I'm not kidding
Just use ut as a WiFi phone 📱
I’m pretty sure getting this phone new from anywhere else is way more than $40
If you buy one of these prepaid phones at Target or Walmart online will they scan it for you to activate or will you have to still make the trip to the store?
That phone is so cheap that even a bum off the street could afford it.
Even a blind guy can afford it!
Yeah but the bum won't buy it. It would cut too much into his liquor budget.
First time seeing you on here and loved it! Keep it up! Jacob doesn't reply to comments but do youuu?❤
Fingerprint scanner is better than 90% of fingerprint scanners from $1,000 phones
I used to have a moto g for years. It was fine and did everything i needed it to do.
I only got a better phone because of the deal i got on contract.
Not bad for the price, I went for the samsung a54 phone and I am pretty happy with it so far its been pretty good.
It breaks you buy another one the next month
The Motorola Apps are not Bloatware....
They are Essential and Helpful Apps
It's unfortunate these budget phones are all 6,5 inches. The main reason I got a high end Samsung is because there are no small options under 600$. Even that S23 is bigger than I'd like, but the small bezels make it just about usable.
i dont see why he was complaining for, from what i seen it was playing stuff fine
The first step in setting up any Android phone is to uninstall/disable any apps that are useless to you.
It's what I do with all the phones I ever had.
The other, other guide 😅
Thanks for your review and humor 😂also just noticed the peanut butter on your shelf lol😮 yums ❤
having bought a pre-paid Motorola blackberry clone and used said phone for about 8 years from 2012 to 2020 it was a pretty good experience it wasn't very good online obviously due to only being 3G but it got the job done when I was growing up especially with its built in FM radio when I upgraded to my first smartphone a prepaid Samsung galaxy J7 crown it was a massive difference despite it being four years old in 2020 I still have that phone today funny enough I use it as a MP3 player although now I use a iPhone SE third gen on T-Mobile as my daily since straight talk keeps raising the price of their unlimited plans to the point of being higher then all three big wireless company's in short pre-paid is good for little kids and people who absolutely need a phone but otherwise always go for a carrier especially if you use a lot of mobile data
