As someone who worked in retail and manufacturing industry most of life as a manager in both i have to say GW is shit and disgusting am surprised they still have retail stores with those horrible practices no way I would recommend them to anyone
if uk has something similar to australia's royal commission maybe there should be one into gw and how it treats it's staff. but that would require a uk government who want to actually fix things
From my year or so of listening to these nightmares it seems to me that the main problems come from the Trainers primarily, I am surprised people haven't bothered to band together to either flood head office with messages or actively contact the one considered the CEO about them
If GW wanted to grow their business, they'd lower their prices. At least the "rank and file" of a faction should be available for low cost. The biggest barrier for entry has always been the high cost. Also, letting the stores rot is a bad idea. Players need a place to meet up and play. If they're going to play on-line,they might as well be playing a video game.
38:00 GW sounds like a Cult. I mean that. This is what you get when you complete Narcissist and Psychopath Control Freaks into middle management with zero people skills who expect and insist you lick the dirt off their boots the moment they enter the room. Pseudo-Aristocrats, entitled pseudo-nobility in a magic little universe (I don't mean 40k, but this hobby at large) that most of the world doesn't even know exists. GW, and thus the game, suffers because of them. How many good staff has been ruined, thrown out, because these lunatics that have no control anywhere else in their live and thus let out their sadistic tyranny in the job? The "trainer" in this story cannot be fixed with training, probably not even with therapy, but a padded cell he does need. I have met enough of such people in my life. They're cruel and a danger to everyone around them. Not necessarily physically, but psychologically and for life in general (as they will control the course of yours). Just think of how many good staff this guy already messed up before this story, and that he will mess up more people afterwards. The mistake lay with whomever promoted him into that position he couldn't be more wrong for in the first place. On his claims: Models were stolen? That's theft, that's a crime, and these models have lots of monetary value, not just personal, which also matters. Is the police involved? No? Then it is irrelevant. Does the shop have a security camera? No? GW's fault. Where the claims of theft made up? By a nameless customer? By the trainer? - It doesn't matter by whom, in either case it would be defamation, and that too is a crime. This "trainer" was very blatantly gaslighting the staff member with all those accusations on the last day of "running the store into the ground" and everything around that. That is a sadistic psychopath. When it's your last day, don't be quiet. That's not being the bigger person. The bigger person, on that day, tells him what's what. And you better have that recorded or a witness. That no witnesses for you are present for such events just allows these moments to become abusive gaslighting garbage struggle sessions. This is pure evil. GW has to root this out, or it will go down the drain. It's "trainers" like that that cost GW. That's the kind of person that makes stores go into the red. All these horror stories come out eventually. They pile up and fill a compendium as big as the Black Library. It makes it seem as if GW hates its frontline workers and its customers, fans, players. Such a company simply does not deserve any money at all. We believe GW only cares about money. Then GW should be interested into firing these psychomonsters, not the staff that makes their shops turn a profit and build a happy cohesive gaming community. Happy Customers come back. A good store manager is everything. The one we had here until she needed to quit for health reasons turned insane numbers of sales. Because she was just so pleasant to talk with, had such enthusiasm for the game and the world, with all its flaws, and didn't push crap onto the customers. She figured out what people actually needed and was right for them, not overselling them, and that's why they came back for more later.
Listening to these horror stories I have to wonder why do people choose to work for GW and also continue to give them money. The more I hear, the more I do not want to try playing. And that sucks as I have numerous friends that have tried to get me into the hobby over the last 10+ years.
I absolutely wouldn't be able to work at GW, I'd have told that trainer he was rude and filed a complaint about him. I've been in the corporate life for too long to put up with that shit.
I think if GW stores worked like that outside the UK, they would eventually wind up being in the news for the wrong reasons. Either because someone sues or because the school bully mentality of these guys rubs someone the wrong way in an American store for the last time.
Not sure you understand how growth works, North. It's not inherently easier to achieve higher growth rates with more people. 5% MOM is crazy though, I agree
I believe I know where those customer reports might have came from. Someone took offence and decided "that guy had to go". I've played GW games for 34 years now. Longer than most players have been alive. Long enough to see how things are, the patterns. It is one of the most toxic games around and whenever someone comments about wanting to start playing my suggestion is to toss everything they have in the trash and walk away. I can barely stand my fellow players anymore and when growing up use to wish for a GW store in my area. Now that we have one, I can't stand the manager. Just a company shill who sounds like a robot with the same canned comments all the time.
I sidestep a lot of the issues by bein' a Necromunda player. Cheap entry cost considering the hobby as a whole, no need to update your models erry three years, emergent roleplay and an understanding that your gangers aren't legends of the Underhive, and the kind of community that forms when you're the guy who lets them know they're not the only one out there who likes a thing.
