Why does he keep baiting her
Still so creepy!
There are a few reasons as to why he is baiting her.
Firstly, the age gap, he is 20 years older than her, Brontë would have wanted that to be an impact since there were A lot of age gap marriages between much older men and younger women.
Secondly, the class difference. Although Rochester doesn’t give a f*** about it, he is from a status where people would frown upon them as being married. Brontë interweaves this into the novel when Lady Ingram and the other higher class ladies talk about their own governesses and how much below them they are. Mr Rochester is a very rich gentleman that shouldn’t have these feelings for Jane, let alone actually have daily conversations with her.
Thirdly, he is trying to see where Jane’s feelings lie. Jane is outwardly a very plain, unsuspecting and quiet woman. However, we know that Jane is anything but that, she is brimming with passion and love, she is very much his equal in that respect. Mr Rochester has tried to make Jane jealous with Lady Ingram to understand if his feelings are reciprocated, he is goading her for any sort of response.
He pushes her when he tells her that she will be moving to Ireland and will never see him again. This is where (but not for the first time) see that passion flow out and Mr Rochester can finally say “got you”.
The next scene is where he announces his love for her and doesn’t just ask her, he demands that she marries him “ I want you as my own, my very own, will you be mine” and “ accept me, marry me”.
Even in the scene where she finds out about his mad wife in the antic, he becomes increasingly desperate to keep her and finally sobs when she has the strength to leave him.
Mr Rochester is a Byronic hero, extremely flawed, struggles with vices, extremely moody but seductive, sexy and also rebellious. In every aspect Jane is his moral superior, which we see by end of the novel where he is blinded and physically injured showing that he is now a much weaker man physically but morally he has become a better man.
Mr Rochester is guided by his senses rather than (unlike Jane) his rational mind. He has no qualms in flouting the social norms of the day thus seeing no issue in the ‘improper’ relationship with Jane and refusing to maintain the proper class boundaries that was expected of him.

I agree🤝🏻 She looks very old, Jane is supposed to be an 18 year old girl and Zelah looks like she's 35 in my opinion
@@orianamandi It's not only her looks, it's the fact that she shows none of the passion or the rebellion that was so peculiar to Jane... To me, this is a big letdown to an otherwise perfect adaptation with a marvelous Rochester.
