This is from the famous episode on which Ella Fitzgerald and Sammy Davis Jr. sang "S' Wonderful" together. Ella and Sammy also sang a variety of solo songs and were the headliners that night. Ed was very excited to have the two legends on the show together! This was also one week before the Beatles first appearance.
How wonderful it was for us to grow up exposed to all different types of music and art, not just what all the kids and our friends liked. A little push in different directions was fantastic for our education.
The undisputed queen of the scat and one of the greatest ladies in the history of vocal jazz, she collaborated with the best jazz musicians throughout her career, in the 60s the trumpeter Roy Elridge (who we also see in this performance) was her usual companion, but perhaps her most remembered artistic partner and friend was Louis Armstrong, with whom she had a special feeling, the result of which were three successful albums in the 50s... In short, as seen in this recording, her sense of improvisation and her vocal control were (and are) within the reach of very few popular music singers...
Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme were 2 of the best singers when it came to scat. I love Ella's enthusiasm and energy as well. Thank you for sharing this. God Bless You and stay safe 🙏 ❤️
Sarah Vaughan était la voix, Billie Holiday le feeling, Bessie Smith le blues, Nina Simone tout à la fois, et Ella le swing. Je les choisis toutes, et quelques autres aussi. Vive le jazz, au féminin comme au masculin !
@@jadezee6316 oh tell me about it .. Ms Fitzgerald was extremely versatile and more than a singer .. she was a musician and extremely modest and humble too .. no ego whatsoever whereas Shirley, well …

would love to see that whole show
Sensational. Such exquisite control of the voice. you didn't know a voice can do that. When she skat sings, you can here the chord changes.
Agree
Her articulation is amazing. You can hear every syllable and all the scat singing hits exact notes 😮

This is real entertainment. Absolutely loved this show watched every week when I was growing up. I'm 62 and I still watch episodes totally awesome.
Why do we only get music acts sent to our phone from Ed Sullivan not regular acts also

Ironically, scat doesn't find you interesting either. C'est la vie.
