Pete, just looking out: Thandi is pronounced TANDY 👍I live 3 miles from Trevor :) Another class act. Fingers crossed for some live dates 🙏 I miss 80s Yes!
Upon first listen, this felt like a West ere Yes record then I realized that he played most of the instruments on it. And his voice...his magnificent voice!
This album is a gem. Imho, award worthy. Even tho it will never get that recognition.lol. I truly loved the instrumental album “Jacarda”. I hope Trevor continues to put out more new material. I still listen to “can’t look away” pretty regularly. One of my faves.I know it’s a big and selfish ask, but I’d love to see Trevor put out some new material with Jon and Rick before it’s all over. Loved your video and review 👍🏻!
Great review I'll be checking it out. 90125 Live was my first concert April 19, 1984 at the Lakeland Civic Center. I don't even have to look at my stub. Berlin was supposed to be the opener on the tour, but got dropped so we got two Bugs Bunny cartoons to open the show instead. 😂
Great review. Have only heard Push (which I loved, a sonic masterpiece. It's like a mix of Yes and The Who on steroids. Big Mistakes is also great too. I downloaded both on itunes and look forward to hearing the rest of the album. He's an extremely talented guy!!!
Saw Trevor with Rick and Jon about 5 years back for that very short lived trio they had. From what Trevor has been saying publicising this....don't think he'll be talking to Jon again much less touring with him....Yes campers love, well, "Drama".
I was in Manchester at the Apollo. What a night! This was Yes again, not the cover band who now the actual Yes band seems. Pity they will not be joining again. It was a stunning concert
@@leconte70 this band is like dr who lol!!and I proudly love both!!! When I saw em,it the only time and chance,it was 2008-09..when they had Benoit David and Oliver W.,it was good(it was my 1st time seeing em) like listening to an older band, with the 70s Anderson voice lol!!they all did great, Chris sang the 1 song that would later end up on Squackett(Steve Hackett and Chris)...tell song Aliens..✌️🍻😁
This album is so very impressive! Trevor has to be one of the most talented people in music today as a musician, composer, and producer. I can see myself listening to every track on this album again and again. It would also be a great album to take on trips. It has tons of energy. I rated it exactly the same, Pete. Great review yet again, sir!!
Can only find a song or two for listening this morning before coming to the review but will say the opener - Big Mistakes - made a great initial impression so will now be waiting on the full release on October 6 for a more complete listen. Interested in your alt-country discussion. On the listening list it goes and likely on the purchase list as well. An album that probably would have passed me by without you, SoT and the weekly new product episodes proving yet again that the weekly shows are must see viewing for a many - and i wish many more - of us.
Great look at the album. I did chuckle, however, when you talked about Oklahoma. A song about the Oklahoma bombing in 1995, and you said “fun stuff.” 😂 True, he has some great style switchups in there, but I still found the phrasing somewhat humorous.
It's rare that I get excited by any current YES related new music these days. With the exception of Anderson/Stolt, most of them do not hold up. I have listened to this CD 3 times now and it is excellent! There are a lot of familiar guitar licks that are very reminiscent of TALK and Solly's Beard but, it goes out further into more adventure than he ever could with the band. One thing that you realize after one listen is that, Trevor can self audit better than anyone from the YES camp, where he does not need another person (Musician, Producer) to validate or reject what he is creating. Maybe because this is who he was before he joined YES and also, he was more of the lead with them on 90125, BG and Talk. You can also really hear, if you already did not know, how much of that yes sound from 83-95 he was responsible for. Solo albums have a tendency to sound like just that, solo albums but, this is really well done and it sounds like a band. Well done and worth the wait!
Hear me out: From what we've heard of Rio so far it's turning out to be Can't Look Away pt.2. Not in a bad way ofc. Picking up exactly where he left off.
I recently saw Rabin interviewed on 'Classic Album Review' channel. I listened to the released single, 'Big Mistakes.' I'm not entirely familiar with the Rabin years of Yes (I prefer the older stuff largely) but 'Big Mistakes' is a really good track. That bass line is great and his voice sounds good. 👍
I have heard only the 2 tracks available. In my opinion, these tracks looks like the continuity of Jacaranda, which is one of my favorite jazz/rock/fusion/whatever album . So am quite interested to hear the whole album. Actually, it is almost same lineup than Jacaranda. It is incredible that Trevor is now almost 70.....time flies.
I really like Jacaranda, and yet, Rio blows it away. The entire album is great; if you've heard only two tracks, chances are you haven't heard the best of it yet.
Yes...I am looking forward to this release! I have enjoyed his solo album "Can't Look Away" since it first came out in 1989. But how can Pete have a copy when the release date is October 6?
I think Pete's Sea of Tranquility time machine is very helpful in getting copies post release and bringing them back pre release. Plus a lot of reviewers get advanced copies from record companies for building up the buzz (especially if they know it's good).
I mean, I do have a webzine and UA-cam channel...the press/media always gets these well in advance of the general public if the labels decide they want to send them to us.
It's a tremendous album with "Push" being the highlight - the mini prog epic we've been wanting. I can't believe you only gave it a "It's a great song" before moving on. 😂
The album hasn't been released yet, but I'm eager to hear it all of it. I've heard "Push" and "Big Mistakes" and songs like "Anerly Road" from his previous album, "Jacaranda" (amazing guitar/keyboard playing). Question: Why don't you discuss in more detail re: "Rio": 1. His keyboard playing? 2. His compositional prowess?
Trevor has a very distinct thing and this album sounds like that. Good in spots, his normal kinda forced pop formula next to his dynamic proggy lines. Really great guitar playing when it's the priority is what I noticed. It's at least solid. I could see it growing.
Marchi does backup vox on Big Mistakes. I'm guessing he helped write the lyrics. All other writing is credited solely to Trevor, including Egoli. Not sure what you saw
@@georgelamie7001 it says on the auto-generated UA-cam uploads on Trevor’s official channel…but I read the liner notes and it says all songs were written entirely by Trevor except Big Mistakes which he co-wrote…
Hasn't been officially released yet so don't have it yet but always liked Rabin. Really good acoustic (fusion) player (McLaughlin's a big influence & he was in the running to fill in for Al DiMeola in The Guitar Trio) & part of Yes during my fave mid 80's (through mid 90's) period. Some of his solo albums are very good, some interesting stuff with Rabbitt (Boys Will Be Boys & A Croak And A Grunt In The Night). Gonna give this one a spin for sure when it does come out!
Trevor is such an amazing artist. His writing dominated 90125, Big Generator and Talk...and it is hard to understate just how unique his prog/pop hybrid approach is. All the prog bands trying to reinvent themselves musically back in the early 80's all took a leaf out of his book at some point.
I listened to a couple of tracks. It just sounds like tracks that could have been on Yes' Talk album. I was hoping for something a little different. He is a great musician and composer, I'll give him that.
In my opinion, this album is the best thing out of the "Yes universe" in a VERY long time. Loving it.
I expected a good album but Rio far exceeded what I was hoping to get. Tremendous work by Trevor.
This album is excellent. In my Top 5 of the year for sure.
to me, this blows away most of the Yes stuff done in the past 20-30 or so years... by a mile. very pleasantly surprised by it
I'm more excited for this release than I expected. What I've heard so far sounds great.

One of the best all around musicians to exist
Fabulous album!!!
This is the Rabin Yes album that never was, after Talk. In my head i can hear Jon singing a couple of songs. Love the album ❤️❤️❤️

Very solid album from an amazing talent. Such incredible musicianship throughout. Great having him back in a rock context.
Jacaranda is a masterpiece. Sadly not many South Africans know about Trevor Rabin. Many of his songs have South African names.
Gnarly good guitar work on this one and Rabin sings well, too

Not prog? Huh, guess we have different definitions.
Another album i will check out. Thank you for your review, Pete.
This countryfied guitars made me think, that someone else played this. But no: It's himself. What a fantastic musician.

Hey, bengal. I added this album to my list. 🎶💜💜
"Push" is very proggy. A track like this would have made "Union" stellar.

After hearing the first 2 singles. I've already got it on order.
Wow
Pete thought this didn’t come out till first week of October
I pre ordered this
Like what I heard so far
From the tracks I've heard so far they're really great
I’ve only heard Push but gotta say, if that song is what the rest of the album is then it’s gonna be a great one
Trevor aged like Tommy Shaw...they can both finally buy beer now without getting carded! 👍
Off for a listen, along with Vandenberg.
I gave it a 4 out of 5 bones. It's a fine solo album.

How the hell is Trevor Rabin 70 years old?
He will turn 70 in January 13th of 2024. And by the way I’m looking forward to hear his new album.
He literally still sounds the same. It’s crazy, yet awesome.
Better than The Corpse, erm, Quest, and Mirror To The Sky combined…

Thanks Pete , ordered. You are costing me a fortune. My wife is not a fan.
Not prog..but more high energy and variety of guitar playing that leaves the last Yes effort sadly even more bland.
His musicianship exceeds the entirety of the current incarnation of that band.
Agreed
*1/2
