  • We recently visited Southern Namibia on a 10 day overland road trip. Visiting the Fish River Canyon, Luderitz and the diamond mining ghost towns of Kolmanskop (Kolmannskuppe) and Elizabeth Bay. From there we turned north to Sossusvlei, an incredible and special place where the Tsauchab River finds it's way to the ocean blocked by the desert sands.
We were privileged to experience water in Sossusvlei, a rare event that only occurs very occasionally after exceptionally good rains in the catchment area. Deadvlei, with it's ancient, 800 year old petrified camel thorn trees is another special place, well deserving of inclusion in my 60460 bucket list.
Time was limited so from Sossusvlei we turned back south towards the Orange River where we crossed back into South Africa after an awesome, mostly gravel roads adventure. This video includes the highlights, in the next few weeks I'll be publishing more detailed videos of each place.

Informal, to -the-point and informative! I have a question or two for you and other readers: I had planned a trip (killed by you-know-what) in Dec. 2020, to introduce my hubby to a country I last visited 30 years ago in a 1974 Beetle. (That trip included Luderitz, Walvis, Swakopmund and Etosha and more.) .When I planned the 2020 trip, access to Fish River Canyon was closed, so my route was Noordoewer; Grunau; a place outside Keetmanshoop ;Luderitz, and back. I'd now like to extend the journey up to Swakop, which is a very long drive. We'll be in an old 2 x 4 Nissan 1400 Bakkie. Can you suggest a slightly quicker, accessible, interesting route from Fish River Canyon up to Luderitz, then to Swakop and back down to RSA that still includes spectacular scenery to share with my hubby? The Luderitz-Swakiop drive is very long, so a midway stayover is essential - but is it worth turning off to Sossusvlei if we only have a 2 x 4? Is there perhaps another good spot where we can spend a night between the two towns?

Hi, Which Ford Ranger is that? Is it XL or XLT? How does it perform offroad and do i really need to make some changes to it to go with it around Namibia? What have you added to your vehicle? What extras?

    • @Kangela

Hi Immanuel, thanks for the question. It's a 3.2l XLT 4x4, and a very comfortable and capable vehicle on and off road. For Namibian travel I would recommend swapping the factory fitted highway tyres with a decent all terrain, I've got Hankooks but any quality tyre would work. If you heading up to Kaokoland you might want to take an extra spare as well, some of those roads are tyre eaters 😂
Apart from the tyres the only other modification I've made is a drawer system, which makes accessing your stuff much easier. And I've done dust proofing around the tailgate, pretty much an essential when travelling long distances on the gravel roads.

Hi Pierre, the road is good, a few heavy vehicles but apart from that no issues at all.

@@Kangela thank you very much, sorry didn't ask if you need 4x4? I was suppose to be in Namibia now but prosponed it because of covid. Looking forward to more videos!

You don’t need a 4x4, but a high ground clearance vehicle will make for a more comfortable drive. You will also need to go to Elizabeth Bay with a guide who will arrange a permit. It's still a working mine so isn't open to the general public. I went with Namib Offroad Excursions (noextours.weebly.com/).
