  • Joints and levers in the human body
    Bones, ligaments, and muscles are the structures that form levers in the body to create human movement. In simple terms, a joint (where two or more bones join together) forms the axis (or fulcrum), and the muscles crossing the joint apply the force to move a weight or resistance. Levers are typically labeled as first class, second class, or third class. All three types are found in the body, but most levers in the human body are third class.
    A first-class lever has the axis (fulcrum) located between the weight (resistance) and the force (figure 1.21a). An example of a first-class lever is a pair of pliers or scissors. First-class levers in the human body are rare. One example is the joint between the head and the first vertebra (the atlantooccipital joint) (figure 1.21b). The weight (resistance) is the head, the axis is the joint, and the muscular action (force) come from any of the posterior muscles attaching to the skull, such as the trapezius.
    Muscles and bones act together to form levers. A lever is a rigid rod (usually a length of bone) that turns about a pivot (usually a joint). Levers can be used so that a small force can move a much bigger force. This is called mechanical advantage.
    There are four parts to a lever - lever arm, pivot, effort and load. In our bodies:
    bones act as lever arms
    joints act as pivots
    muscles provide the effort forces to move loads
    load forces are often the weights of the body parts that are moved or forces needed to lift, push or pull things outside our bodies.
    Levers can also be used to magnify movement, for example, when kicking a ball, small contractions of leg muscles produce a much larger movement at the end of the leg.
    Levers are able to give us a strength advantage or a movement advantage but not both together.

    I don't think it's the heel that acts as the fulcrum, but the toes, since the heel is moving up and down, right?

    Isn't Elbow joint is a class 1 lever?
    Correct me if I'm wrong
    Because fulcrum comes in the center and effort and loads are in the two opposite ends

    • @Abdul_Basit120
      @Abdul_Basit120 Рік тому +1

      I know it's been a long time since this text but anyway
      Your elbow act as the fulcrum and insertion point of brachialis muscle is away from fulcrum which act as Effort and the weight can be anything in hand
      Hence you first have the fulcrum then the effort and then the weight

    The first class lever seems incorrect. The load and effort should both be applying force downward. This example shows the the effort applying force upwards as it would be in a second and third class lever.

    • @munsta08
      @munsta08 5 років тому

      Muscles can only pull towards their origin. The postural neck muscles (e.g. trapezius) would pull the posterior aspect of the skull downward. On the other hand, the anterior neck muscles (e.g. sternocleidomastoid) would pull the anterior aspect of the skill downwards. Hope that helps :)

    • @patq3135
      @patq3135 5 років тому

      @@munsta08 Reverse muscle action is pulling from origin to insertion therefor allowing muscle pull in both directions. I was referring to the diagram of the first class lever and not the actual example of it in the body.

    Why exactly is this necessary for our knowledge? Even in a profession? Who the fuck cares whats a fulcrum in the body just as long as we know what body part we're referring to it makes no sense to add the fact that the elbow is a fulcrum like wtf

    • @wvhaugen

      Uh - If you are a weight lifter you have probably wondered why it is so hard to get the same gains in your calves as in your chest, biceps, etc. It is because they are a second-class lever. This is part of the evolutionary history of the human body and makes for efficiency in bipedal walking. Therefore, to get big gains in your calves you have to "blast" them to overcome the inherent efficiency.
