it's been toxic since day 1, any type of car stuff that developed even early in the 60s has always been toxic, but everyone knows that you do what you like and people judge respectfully, now comes the internet, where you don't see the car only at a meet, but you can hide behind a screen and say the most devious shit without any repercussion whatsoever. Like irl you'd be saying "hmm i don't like the wheels but it's cool" but on social media after seeing the 500th useless undriveable 1000hp 200k build you see a normal car some teenager still in school owns with maybe even cool mods, but you'll be so desensitized by it that you'll just comment "it's just an xxxxxx it's slow 🤡🤡". Like i can't make this shit up, no one lately in the online community seems to actually drive a car, nothing matters as much as any type of handling mods but you don't see anyone talking about anything like that, the only thing that matters is making 1000hp to go do pulls on the freeway entry (not on the freeway because they'll get too fast and the car for some reason doesn't handle as good). I can go on and on on this shit honestly, the community is changing and it's going to only get worse, but imo it will save itself when it'll go out of trend on tiktok and stuff like that, give it 5 to 10 years and we'll see who actually sticks lol

This is one of the main reasons I don't really link with other people unless I can actually trust them. Too many tiktokker brain virus attention chasers with NPC energy. No idea who they are and why they are, they just exist and take space.
It's also difficult because I'm a creative and I see some really great builds I'd like to film or photograph, but have terrible owners or associates.

Facebook marketplaces replete with examples of people who decided to take my car body and make it into something that it wasn't designed to do and that they can't control. Car culture is a classic example of "How DARE you enjoy something different from the way I think it should be enjoyed!" Especially post-COVID for whatever reason, discourse in the car community has been increasingly ugly. Go on any post showcasing a car build and the comments will be 90% people who hate it and need you to know that they hate it and anyone who likes it by extension. Ask about any slightly unconventional mod for a car, and you'll get bombarded by angry messages from people saying you're ruining the car and therefore an idiot/monster. And that attitude inevitably spawns people saying "screw it, I'm gonna modify the car in a way that will make you mad on purpose just to make you mad," which is funny for 5 seconds until you realize fighting toxicity with toxicity only creates more toxicity...
I've been in the classic car world for several years and the attitude towards modding is so weird... if it's a hot rod/dragster/muscle car build, you can radically change the look of the car, cut fenders, do all kinds of stuff and people are generally cool with it. But put a widebody kit on it and suddenly you're a heretic and everyone hates you and screams "Y U RUIN CLASSIC!?" Or people get into stupid arguments about what kinds of classics you're allowed to like (four-door classic car owners know the pain).
And then there's the whole Muscle VS. Tuner wars, "I'd rather push an (x) than drive a (y)," and the worst of them all - the electric VS. gas debacle... I don't even like EVs but I feel sorry for all the EV guys who have to deal with the constant stream of hate and harassment from every keyboard warrior with a Mopar and opinions. I've seen EV owners get called slurs and other nasty names just for owning an EV, and even people saying they hope that person's EV bursts into flames with them in it, or leaves them stranded in the middle of nowhere, or bankrupts them with repair costs. NOBODY deserves that, NONE of that is okay, no matter how much you dislike someone's car.
And heaven help you if you're one of the poor souls who's trying to think rationally and take a reasonable stance of giving EVs a chance while still liking gas cars, as the hardcore gas people and hardcore EV people both now see you as the enemy. At least the EV people are just smug and annoying about their cars at worst, the way some internal combustion loyalists treat the EV crowd makes me ashamed to be an engine enthusiast sometimes, like... are we the bad guys? I don't want to be associated with them...
Competition, ego, attention seeking at all costs, trying to tear others down out of jealousy or to grab more attention for yourself... Why can't we all just see that at the end of the day we all like driving wheeled machines that go zoom and take us places? And that each of these machines has something different to offer, which is worth giving a chance? And that everyone's preference will be different, which is okay because there are many different wheeled zoomy machines and their diversity keeps the world vibrant? And most of all, that in these coming years more than ever, we can't keep dividing ourselves like this - we need unity in protecting all aspects of this hobby we collectively love. At the end of the day, these trivial differences are unimportant, they're just cars, and there are more important things in life than cars - but if you love cars, then you need to learn to love your fellow car enthusiasts so that the car community can stay strong instead of imploding under the weight of internal tension. A community divided against itself cannot stand.

Hey man First of all I want to say thank you for your time and feedback. This write up is amazing.
I do agree with you on the post Covid Hate and I think it stems from poor habits developed during covid when it pertains to the internet.
What do you drive currently? What type of classic cars are you into? It’s like people on the internet if you dont fit the typical image they will condemn you. For instance the iconic RWB Porsche 911 its undeniable and no one can say anything because its art and quite literally every build is just the same.
I see EVs in a much different light than most people we need them to validate our gas powered machines. It highlights virtually everything we know and love about cars and what we dont. EVs can be appreciated and respected but they dont have to be liked people hate change and I get that but change is good and some ways.
The ego struggle is something ive been trying to grasp but it has not been easy I think with the $500 billion dollar evaluation cars have become a business and one of the largest sectors to be honest.
It is what it is man I hope that people can all just appreciate that we all share a love for cars and it looks different from person to person and we respect it.

    • @Thinginator
      @Thinginator 4 місяці тому +6

@@rayyankhan8726 Yeah it used to be most of the EV hate was out of fear that they were going to replace ICE entirely (which is still a big part of it, with half the haters calling them "government mandated battery cars"), but it's disgusting how that hate has been turned towards the owners themselves for "supporting" it, or acting like EVs are a huge scam/conspiracy and mocking the owners for "falling for it." Like, dude. For some people, EVs make MORE sense than gas cars, and I'm not gonna fault anyone for making an objective decision in that regard. A lot of people buy the car that works for them, that's all there is to it. Heck, even I've been eyeing the new Aptera EVs with solar panels and spaceship-like aerodynamics since 41 miles of solar-charged range per day would be perfect for me, and I like the design. But even if I were to just buy a dirt cheap used Nissan Leaf of something, I'd get swamped with mocking comments asking me if I had to trade my balls for it or whatever. The EV hate is insane.

@@TheOBDMafia I own two classic cars, a 1990 Miata (it's wild that 90s cars are classics now) and a 1966 Ford Thunderbird hardtop coupe. The '66 used to be my semi-daily driver until it got rear-ended last year, and I bought the Miata with the payout after insurance declared my T-bird a total loss. I did keep the Thunderbird though, as it's really not that bad - still tracks straight and drives properly, just has messed up bodywork in the back, which an experienced shop should be able to straighten out. Dumb insurance only cares about what parts are replaceable... but I digress. The Miata was another long-time attainable dream car, and I'm happy to say it's everything I hoped it would be. It's hilariously the polar opposite of my T-bird, but I love the differences between the two cars. They're both unique and fun in their own ways. Now I just have to save up for eventual Thunderbird repairs so I can get a rebuilt title and drive it again.

They talk bad about cars that may have worse performance but fail to realize why maybe the car has better features in a different area. Maybe the guy wants it as a daily driver so he doesn't slap on so many expensive parts. It's just not something toxic people take into consideration. While it WAS fun while it lasted - if I could do it over again I would have gone Sti…..

A person could be modding their car thinking of nothing but their own vision, but somehow it’s for clout? He/she can spend countless hours learning and building his own car, but it’s all attributed to clout chasing? It’s just not fair, especially when it’s based off nothing concrete. I feel like a true enthusiast understands the car is a machine that should be driven, and if you’re destroying functionality to get a reaction from “haters” then it’s hard to see them as an actual car lover and not a clout chaser.

You've gotta build the car for you and you only.
Cars that are (or were) an icon, a class leader, are always targeted because they are seen as a high bar or standard to try to beat. Any icon captured in a point of time will be eventually dethroned as the rest of the market evolves over time. We can try to "build" cars to keep up in order to address how they may fall short of new competition, but unless you and your car and evolve radically with market evolution, you will lose over time. Then the haters come big time saying their ride is better than yours... but remember if you build it for yourself than it doesn't matter as long as you're enjoying it. Stay true to what you want - live that out!

100% many of these 90s icon jdm legends dont come with more than 250-300 hp and since they have aged that number has lowered. The reality is evolution is fast and things that were cool are not as cool. Years ago 500hp was god mode. But now if your car doesnt make 800-1000hp its considered slow. I think thats a diluted way of viewing cars we are not building spaceships to the moon.

Honestly the biggest thing ive noticed in the car scene as someone thats getting into cars is the obsession over engine swaps and making the most horse power out of your cars as possible as if thats the only way you can enjoy your car. Maybe im getting a scewed perception of it since my first project is a 90s civic with the Honda civic people being obsessed with B or K engine swaps etc.
This honestly just makes me wanna stay out of that community as much as i can other than watching people do restorations on older cars since thats whats bringing me into this whole car thing. Learn about mechanical stuff on an older car with less complex stuff to then also pick up skills on the side such as welding and get better at wiring electrical stuff etc. Theres tons to learn with great communities out there though the negatives do tend to outshine the positives.

Thats okay thought its my car and not a race car.

There’s a huge shift in attitudes at different car meets from what I’ve found. I used to host car shows some years ago and it was mostly classics. From my experience the older gens in the car scene are very down to earth and everyone can appreciate each other’s cars easily. I’m in college now and am finally getting to drive more but I’m not excited about going to meets as much. I think the toxic people in my generation just haven’t been around a wide range of cars long enough to truly appreciate everything. I recently considered myself a "car guy" but i never really tell people unless its a close friend. I dont want to be associated with it at all and much rather prefer talking to individuals on a personal level about cars and i can go off and talk about them all day because its truly something i love. Props to this video. I drive a 2009 Forester 5MT. There's a small SH community out there where I live and couldn't be more happier seeing another friendly face on the road. Who cares if other cars are faster? Many classics from the 80's, 90's are by no means fast by modern standards, yet it's these cars that will turn heads x10 more than a Tesla (No hate to Tesla ofc! Lol)People will see how much you care about your car just by how you take care of it and maintain it's longevity on the road! I've slowly grown immune towards what other people may think or say. When you say ego comes into play, I fully agree. Everything is expensive and we're too blessed and grateful to be given opportunities to drive these petrol vehicles. Who knows how long it may take until governments start limiting certain transportation methods? There are many factors as to why you choose to lean toward a certain manufacturer, ex., Subaru has always supported the ethos of community, adventure and fun performance off-road, and have never felt mean-spiritedness whenever in a car meet. There may be other manufacturers that may wield similar or better cars and idealogies fit for this job, but then you take into account costs, prices, availabilty, etc. Who gives af what other people say? They've never stepped a foot in your shoes, and have never experienced what you have. Good looks on your WRX!🔥🔥 Beautiful build on red paint btw.

There wasn't a real community of people, it was just people became "friends" with whoever had the coolest cars. It's unfortunately all the social-media addicted people that are like this... Always see people hating on older JDMs besides the GTR and Supra because it's "only" 240 hp. No one gives a damn about driving super fast in a straight line but all these kids want clout and just spout the same dumb stuff into an echo chamber. Just appreciate the car and what it can do for yourself.

Yeah all the 90s cars don’t exceed 300 because of the gentlemen’s agreement in Japan so from the cars that started the JDM car cluture they were “slow” in a straight like. I think the american muscle is skewing the terminology of fast.. well fast compared to what. Dont get me wrong I admire the guys laying it down on the drag strip but people need to understand those cars a purposely built to do straight line passes.

I love cars, I have since before I could speak. Now I literally design toy cars. I've had an Abarth 500 for years that I absolutely love. Yes, it's just a tarted-up FIAT with 60% more horsepower and a straight pipe and a body kit. It's not "fast fast." I've never cared that it's impractical, weird, and slower than a lot of other sports cars. But other car people REALLY care about that. Speed and noise are not the only reasons to love cars. I'd drive a Model A coupe if I had the money for one. I like what you said about cars being like fashion styles - I love vintage and oddball cars, and despite the fact that I can name probably hundreds of vintage cars on sight, so many people in the car enthusiast community still look down on that as "less than" driving a Dodge Demon. I've learned that vintage car enthusiasts tend to be a lot more welcoming than sports car enthusiasts, so I tend to only really engage with them. And even that's rare. I think a lot of it is toxic masculinity and fragile egos, "my car has to be the fastest and loudest." I'm perfectly happy with my baby blue subcompact that's slowish and loud and weird, because it's also a joy to drive and makes me smile even just from walking past it.

Do you really design toy cars ?? You have to tell me more about that bro!
Love the Fiat BTW straight up go carts better than the Mini cooper imo 👀. Ive seen fast fast Fiats but light and Turbocharged thats hard to beat. To me vintage car at the real cars more machine less computer… call me a purist, but thats what it is.
I love that you enjoy owning and driving your car . The connection with your car is strong.
I do see that vintage enthusiast tend to be more welcoming and likely it’s because they are breed from my era of simplicity, and they just love cars. You know I envisioned what it would be like owning a sports card in the 80s and 90s. It probably was pretty cool because it was eccentric. Now liking cars is kind of mainstream.

I've loved cars since I was a child and dreamed of owning a WRX so last year, I finally bought one. The stars aligned and I took a chance- but I very quickly became a statistic. I brought the car home after a visceral first drive and parked it, going to bed that night feeling unstoppable and giddy. I couldn't sleep I was so amped. The next day I go to start it up, and smoke begins POURING from underneath the car. My heart broke. So many emotions ran through me. Guilt, regret, anger, hopelessness. I thought I seriously fucked up- and to make matters worse, just days before buying it I read a post about shitty Subaru owners and how important the vetting process was for buying a used WRX. I felt incredibly intimidated, especially considering the only maintenance I've ever done myself was fluid and oil changes, maybe a headlight here and there. It felt like the kid inside me died that day and a realization was born: shit was about to get real.
Fast forward to today, I've had the WRX for 9 months and have learned more than I ever thought I was capable of. Even the bad can turn out good.

Its no longer just about owning a car. How much clout are you chasing. So people just want to be the one with all the stones to throw. In the days of forums, there were bad actors but they were quickly shot down by those who knew more about the platform or just general knowledge on the subject. these days, its easy to just drown out relevant information with just pure stupidity and people regurgitating the same tired lines we used as insults back then. It took a while, but I finally found a shop that I trust. The manager is a former rally driver who raced the ARA national championships for 15 years, and collects/restores rare Subarus. All the mechanics are highly vetted trained, typically straight out of a Subaru dealership. They pay a lot better than the dealership and it's a better environment, so for mechanics it's a win. They're super transparent, take tons of pictures for documentation and will work with you on any issue. I've even been on test drives with the mechanic who works on my car while trying to chase down an Intermittent issue. It does mean the labor is pretty expensive, but they don't gouge you on parts (I've compared invoice prices with online and it typically matches up).

I feel it, I drove a 2004 Volvo XC70 that I was working on to be a Cyberpunk Nomad car, I got custom plates, drilled a remote control spotlight to the hood and a solar panel, it looked cool to me, and I loved the Turbo, even though it was only like 200HP the car was fun to drive to me. I also loved the volvo community I was a part of.
I got a Subaru Outback 2017 Base to be my new daily and honestly, I got severe buyers' remorse. The cars' more expensive, but doesn't feel as worth it as my little shitbox. All my friends tell me the Subaru looks better but now I'm second guessing the 175HP NA engine, the CVT, and honestly the Subaru Outback is such a common car it doesn't feel as cool to me, honestly feels too lame to even be my little Cyberpunk car.
I'm one of the worst car enthusiasts around, I love turbo wagons that are a dying breed, I like having a mixture of capable overlanding and fun city driving and the practicality of good Cargo Space, but I don't really care for Subarus, everyone drives them (in my area at least) and the Subaru Outback Enthusiasts I've come across are obnoxious. I miss the way older cars were built but that's not sustainable, so I guess I'm just in a life time of disappointment because I need to be special, lol.

Its okay to feel that remorse because you now know how special that car was thats how I feel about my 2002 subaru forester. It’s not turboed yet but I just love the practicality space and novelty the boxy looks makes it stand out.
People focus way to much on the cars other people drive When i see something different from mine i always try to learn more about the person and the car.
You cant be a bad enthusiast because its not about what cool or other people its about you and the relationship to the car. The memories that cannot be replicated or duplicated timeless.

I agree, but I think it’s the mix of categories. For instance I clown on Subaru’s because they make such little power relative to money spent.
If they want power, I try to point them in a beneficial direction. If they don’t that’s fine, I just don’t respect slow cars because I get my joy out them (primarily) through performance.
So when I can’t share that kind of joy with them, it becomes really hard to relate.

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  5 місяців тому +3

Yeah the mix categories and types of cars is what makes the community great. Yeah to make power on Subaru’s is a ton of money of money because one its a 4cly and an unconventional one to say the least. Put it this way you need a virtually a whole new system and engine with forge internals just to make respectable power.
I think its unrealistic and to expect super high hp out of a subaru….unless you have deep pockets.
The word slow…. Is relative because its hard to beat a Miata in a togue in a mountains… just like is hard to beat a Demon or hellcat in a straight line. Some people like hp and tq some people like lightwieght and handling it really just boils down to what you want.
The joy we both can share is for the road we both love machines that bring us joy.
Id encourage driving a bunch of different cars and see how the otherside lives.

So, I spent the morning helping my friend work on his engine swap. I realized that this might be the last time I help someone with their project as well. They tell me about what "so and so" built, and about "The stock bottom end record" that someone took a picture of.
-- "Built not bought" is stupid. You buy a car, then buy stuff from numerous vendors and bolt it all together. You didn't build a thing. That's called "Bought and assembled". It's not a bad thing, but don't try to be tough about it. The diesel side of things has been really bad about that, and it's negatively impacting our right to repair.
-- I didn't understand my love for cars until I got older and spent time in engineering industry. When we get our first car, it's so liberating. As we mature and develop our driving skills, we start to feel a lot of shortcomings on our cars that slow us down. That's where we start modding. I've been in engineering for 12 years now. It's my belief that most of us who actually like cars are people who deep down could have served in sciences but lived in a place that didn't enable it. When I was in high school, car culture was super frowned on because a lot of people in the area got killed in DWI crashes. In school, if you asked a car related question that applied the math lesson, they'd put you down and say "it's dangerous, you don't know that". I believe that many of us fall in this category.

It can be rough, but I've been blessed that most I've interacted with love my cars and what I've done with them. I'll likely never have anything remotely powerful or fast because I don't have the money or technical knowledge for engine swaps, but my 88' Supra and 01' Celica GT-S are still a complete blast to drive and get lots of attention.
I think that unless you're in it for social media clout, most enthusiasts just love cars.

Those are 2 legendary cars right there. I think the crowd plays a big roll with older cars there less information and they are leas attainable to people in my generation so they attract the OGs the mature crowed that appreciates cars because they were born in an era where 300hp was wild and 500hp was unheard of on the street. The true enthusiasts are in the garage or at the track or drinking beers with the guys after a long week not online.

Still the original block. The FA is much more reliable than the EJ but it boils down to is maintenance, quality parts, and a great tuner. Of course you also need to understand the limits of the car and have good driving habits. But I haven’t had any major issue. Cobb is not the most ideal piggy back ecu management but it beats the 7k price tag for Motec.

You asked for experience.. here’s a story. About 7 hours ago I went to my cousins shop (axel and body) to use a lift on a day they are closed while he’s working there. I’m getting the lift arms on the jack points on one side of the car while he’s talking to me and doing the same thing on the other side of the car. Half hour later I noticed. He didn’ get the front arm even close to the right spot and now my side skirt is dented/creased and paint is cracked on it.
So when you are talking about how we treat our vehicles.. couldn’t have said it better. I’m a Little salty today. This was nice to hear honestly.

Love the video, I can tell by the way you speak you have a lot of experience in regard to cars. In regards to the car community, I think the people you will meet in real life do NOT even come close to the online community. People online are impulse, quick-thought commenters, who sometimes hide behind anonymity, and for some it definitely feels good to hate. But from my experience the kinds of meets you go to in real life will sort of determine the types of characters to show up. For instance think of takeovers; dangerous, ignorant drivers are the norm. I have been to numerous car events (obviously there will always be exceptions) where people just keep it cool, love the builds and enjoy others work and effort and just talk about cars in general peacefully, with enjoyment. If you are kept openminded you can enjoy any and all cars regardless of who made it and what was done to it. I don't stick to 1 brand, because i love CARS, the engineering, and the design. I love all eras, all styles of builds. And even for things I dislike, I know there's a place for them. for instance, I'm not particularly fond of the fast and furious styled body kits, but I can appreciate the early 2000's completed look, the effort it takes to even find old body kit parts, for instance. (although I cant lie I kind of don't get full on back to the future flying car camber lol it just destroys the car.) Also, I just bought a slow ass 2001 vw mk4 12v vr6 gti glx, and its my first car but super fun, and sounds amazing. I don't care that its barely got like 200hp lol, its a pos but its my pos.

Hey, man. First time on your channel. This video encompasses at least most of how I feel about cars, as (let's say) hobby. Definitely can be love/hate, at times. There are a few things contributing to the toxicity that is increasingly bothering be: gate keeping, elitism, purism. One thing that I personally find increasingly saddening is the shift away from "hot rodding." ...and I'm not talking about just classic muscle, here. I mean, any car that you personally modified to make it better, either objectively or subjectively. Seems like so many people just write big checks, these days. Then they go around bragging to everyone about this and that. Dropping $100k on a brand new sports car doesn't impress me. If you DIYed some coilovers, or brake kit, or even some esthetic mods, whatever the case, that's more impressive to me. Shoehorning an LS into an e30 BMW in your two car garage over 2 years... that impresses me. Spending $5k on a "fixer upper" and turning it into your own little expression of personality, that impresses me.
At any rate, I like this video. I'm going to check out more of your stuff.

affirm has help bridge the gap between people now people just drop money they dont have on cars they dont own yet for clout.

I remember feeling a lot of the negatives described here about the community when younger but two big things that help. First get car, bike, or truck friends with totally different taste, it helps keep your own unique tastes in check and simply better perspective. The bigger thing is be active in some sort of event that steers clear of all the negatives, I'm sure there are others but I found 95% of the track and or autocross community to be super wholesome since its all just people chasing a familiar goal even if skill, styles, all of it varies wildly.
Also avoid too much time online related to anything that doesn't feed your mind or well being, people bickering about cars is waste of everyone's time. If you aren't learning, or sharing enjoyable stories then it's a waste.

    • @TheOBDMafia

I also agree the less time you spend online the better chance you have yo meet like minded people. Track events do have a much more mature crowd and maybe that due to priorities and money but it a much more pleasant set of people. You hit that spot on if you aren’t trying to learn and share ideas then whats the point. People like to gate keep information but forget they learned from somewhere else.

Some of the hardest work I've done is building cars of mine from aftermarket parts that all need their own finessing/adjusting/etc to fit perfect. If someone wants to deal with that, it should be their cross to bear, just like my passion causes me to bear mine. Anything "too new" and even gatekept project cars or rat rods for not being good enough. And what we ended up with is a car culture that treats car brands and styles, LIKE sports teams. Instead of a culture of individuals that SHOULD be helping each other grow. Not to mention that a lot of the online discussion around cars is 60% people who aren't even old enough to have a license.

I like the comparison to sports teams… i mean thats super strange too. People who are willing to kill one another over people who could not car any less if they are rooting for them or not. The online conversation is a big point many people whom dont even drive and read somewhere mustangs and chargers are “fast” and not is going around pretending to be a car enthusiast.

They ruin it for everyone. Ive never been one to go to car meets or events out of fear that it could turn into one of those infamous taakeovers you see on instagram. Im just sad at what the car community has become. I look at old carmeet vids from 2003 here on UA-cam and everyone was just out to have fun and not cause mischief. Car prices for a 240sx or an integra for example were normal priced and not hyped up to a ridiculous amount because of the internet. Peoples builds were unique because it wasn’t copied a dime a dozen like they are now thanks to social media. But now a days, if your car isn’t making 1000+hp, its deemed slow. High hp and fastest 0-60 times have replaced just enjoying your car and having fun. And im afraid its at a point of no return

In a ideal world i see enthusiast cars being old JDM cars thats are way too expensive to buy and hard to find parts for and new enthusiast cars market up to oblivion and way to expensive for someone with a decent job to afford. I think the next 10-15 years will be the last ICEs we see and the last real “enthusiast” era we see. So enjoy your SI as much as you can brother. i appreciate your words and thanks for watching.

Where I'm from the car scene is so bad, if you don't own an german car on air no one will talk to you, I bought my dream car, a first generation WRX and everyone constantly made me the butt of jokes because of it. Years later I own 3 rare import cars and I don't post on socials or even go to meets, I do track days or drive the countryside. Alone in my workshop spannering away is the happiest I've ever been.
To those unsure or feeling pressured to follow a trend because of others, don't do it. Do what makes YOU happy, at the end of the day its going to sit on your drive and its gotta make you happy, don't build a car for likes and follows, build it to put a smile on your face.

My biggest thing now is everyone thinks they are knowledgeable on forums, I’m a senior tech for Mazda and own a Subaru, my local subie page on Facebook has so much misinformation being spread to newer enthusiasts that they end of spending tons of money on useless shit and blaming others when something goes wrong. I literally gave up on trying to teach others because someone’s pride is in the way.

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  4 місяці тому

Absolutely everyone is an expert. I know I am still learning and I love to continue to learn. I joined forums because of people like you. Tech, tuners, manufactures, and people who have experience and lessons learned but people the forums especially for Subarus are awful. I caught a guy saying intakes on subarus dont need a tune I called him out and told him to stop misguiding people and do more research because no tuner says that and the data logs don’t lie. People have so much pride that they cannot even imagine a world where maybe they dont know at least one thing that the other person is saying.

The reason I spend a lot on my car over anything else in my life is simply because it was/is my dream. Everyone has different dreams, some want to own an amazing house , job and what not…I just wanted a car that put a smile on my face and made me happy no matter what day it is. That’s my definition of a car enthusiast :).

I just did a vacation in Italy, driving ~2700 km in my 159 1750 TBi 200hp when new (14y/o). Stock car with 287.000 km on the dash. It’s not gonna break any land speed records, but I couldn’t care less. I think you nailed it about peoples’ egos. I’d say the worst offenders are the types of people with a lot of money, either their own or their parents’, who feel the need to dunk on other people or their cars to make them feel better about themselves or superior. Not saying all car people with deep pockets are like this. This world is going to shit anyway. Keep enjoying your rides brothers and sisters!

What Ive grown to realize is that most of the people with actual real money dont even bother with the community its the people who think they have alot of money or try to show people they got alot of money. But then they use Affirm to fund their build.
Its wild to me that people get so passionate about other peoples rides as off it affects their life.

@@TheOBDMafia I’m originally from Romania (Eastern Europe) but I moved to the Netherlands a bit over 2 years ago.
I guess it depends on the type of person also. Collectors with garage queens will attend a different kind of “meet” rather than a takeover or stuff like that. On the other hand, you have the opposite, the ones over compensating like you said. Unfortunately all communities have their bad apples, and with something like the car community there’s definitely the room for overinflated egos. I mean, you could make fun of my Alfa and I could make fun of your Subaru all while keeping it friendly and just have a laugh. But unfortunately a lot of people just get triggered or take it way too personally and it turns into a cockfight. I love all cars, even the ones I don’t like, I would still enjoy the experience of driving something I haven’t experienced yet. I guess it’s also a matter of finding the right people, building a tribe, that sort of stuff.

I've had some not so great experiences with shops, but mostly pretty solid tbh. The closest shop to my house is a family owned business that my family has known since before I was born. Good people, and any time there is an issue with the work they did, they take care of it. Recently lucked out on a transmission rebuild, found a guy who runs his shop out of a storage unit with just him and his son working it, better price than anyone else around that I found, even with some upgrades to the trans thrown in, and the trans has been running great ever since.

I am really happy to hear you were able to get your transmission built a skill that is fairly rare these days. The cost to rebuild at some shops surpass the cost of purchasing a new one. It’s always great to know a good and honest shop owner.

@Mafia Kind of, but not really. The car in question is a GMT400 Tahoe, bought it while it was a bit rough around the edges, I've repainted the hood and got rid of the bit of rust that was there, replaced all of the suspension, replaced minor things that needed it like tires, radio, speakers, headlight housings, door mirrors, things like that. Getting ready to drop the tank, clean it out and reseal it, along with replacing the consumables there (filter, pump, etc.) eventually going to turn into a camping/light offroading vehicle, still have a lot left to do to it.
I can't wait to see what happens with your forester, I do like fast cars and handling beasts, but vehicles for adventures really get me going.

It's all romantic and idealized watching others drive sports cars on instagram. Then you buy a sports car with all your money (problem 1) and you end up with original seats, wheels and exhaust in your living room up to the ceiling (problem 2) because you couldn't resist buying Recaro's and Supersprint exhaust... and that _is_ miserable, it's a full on lifestyle you have to dedicate your self to.
