Great video. I found that the best way to read the book for the first time is not by slowly plowing through it---- but speed reading it quickly. Analyze each page as quickly as possible, grasp the essentials of what is happening, and move on. Don't concern yourself with details, but look at the big picture. Then when you get to the very end, go back and read it again. It's a book meant for reading more than once. It's truly a unique classic that stands alone in world literature.

A common theme with your videos is that I learn something new when watching them. Thank you.

I loved this book!!!! Then again I've always been into classic history, mythology, theology. So the jokes and language is hilarious. I think the best way to do describe this book is to say it's what 21 year old females think when they are around males of any age. They (males, supposedly straight) care more about what others males think of them and their member than they care about being playing to women. Yet, they need woman. A man needs a woman. A woman does not need a man. Yet men, instead of being honest about their irrelevant place in society abs bowing to the great v, they cater to the adolescent bathroom humor of 9 year old boys and pretend to care about sports less they appear less manly TO OTHER MEN. It's fking hilarious. Men like shandy are irrelevant. Had he not told his story the world wouldn't be any different. In fact it takes 9 volumes to get to his story because everyone and everything is more relevant than he. Hell, he doesn't even get christened until volume 4. The whole story is about how important he fancies himself but he's so irrelevant to existence 4 volumes pass before he even enters into existence. Brilliant. Bloody brilliant.

'requires a little bit more effort these days.' You hit the nail on the head. Sadly, many are not prepared to put in that effort. They want everything neatly explained and if a book does require effort, then the book is labelled as 'bad' or 'boring'.

I also switched between the actual physical book and an audiobook. I don't think I would've been able to understand everything if I hadn't read the summary for each volume first before proceeding to read it myself. However, English isn't my mother tongue and I'm not sure, whether that made a huge difference in my reading experience.

Just started. My plan is to read one chapter a day, out loud, for the next few years.

I hope Finnegans Wake is on that list. I'll have to go check and see.

It would be great to have an annotated edition or perhaps a skeleton key tome to read side by side.
