Good morning, Juan.
There is a famous Brazilian university professor named Sergio Paulo Rouanet who wrote a 300 page book (in Portuguese) called “Laughter and Melancholy”.
In this book he demonstrates four characteristics of what he calls the Shandean Form, which are the following: the narrator's constant and capricious presence; digressivity and fragmentation; special treatment, strongly subjective, given to time and space; and interpenetration of laughter and melancholy.
He then mentions 5 books that fit the characteristics, namely:
1. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (by Laurence Sterne)
2. Jacques the Fatalist and his Master (by Denis Diderot)
3. Voyage Around My Room (by Xavier de Maistre)
4. Travels in My Homeland (by Almeida Garrett)
5. Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (by Machado de Assis)
To these five, a sixth must be added, in my opinion:
6. The Triumph of Death (by Augusto Abelaira, no English translation to this date)
All 6 of these books are extremely similar and each one of them has been strongly influenced by its predecessors. If you liked Sterne’s writing style I am pretty sure that you would absolutely love all of them.
All of these books can also be found in Portuguese (3 of them, by Garrett, Machado and Abelaira, were written originally in Portuguese):
1. A Vida e as Opiniões do Cavalheiro Tristram Shandy (1759-1767) - Laurence Sterne
2. Jacques, o Fatalista, e Seu Amo (1778-1796) - Denis Diderot
3. Viagem à Roda do Meu Quarto (1794) - Xavier de Maistre
4. Viagens na Minha Terra (1846) - Almeida Garrett
5. Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881) - Machado de Assis
6. O Triunfo da Morte (1981) - Augusto Abelaira
And the book by Rouanet is called “Riso e Melancolia”, in Portuguese.

I really love and appreciate everything you have in this video. I love the background and context you dig into. That being said, I'm about half way through the book and hate it with every fiber of my being (and honestly I kind of want to like it), but I appreciate your thoughts. I appreciate he could create and write such a nonsensical book, especially dealing with some health ailments and writing his humor novel, and trying to be so edgy, but it is so scatterbrained and unappealing and jarring for the most part. Seinfeld and nonsense without any fun at all. Anyhow, though, fabulous thoughts and thanks for being so informative. Great video.

I first heard about Tristram Shandy a few years ago when the BBC released a documentary about the origins of the novel, and it has been something I've thought about reading ever since. Thank you for taking the time to not only reviewing the book, but for giving some further context and biographical notes about the author as well. I think it is definitely a book I will pick up in future as it sounds as though it will challenge my sensibilities: on the one hand, I love a humorous novel and on the other hand, I prefer a plot in my books. We will see.

I'm reading Tristram Shandy at the moment. Although I'm aware that certain topics are beyond my understanding (the large number of philosophers, fortification building in details), I´m struggling through it. At times it is quite funny. Decided to read the german translation and the text sounds amazing, not at all like a translation. Thank your for your video!

This is one of the only books that defeated me for being too difficult. I've dnf lots of books for lots of reasons, but this one just defeated me on an intellectual level. I can blame it on the fact that I tried to read it when I was pregnant with my first. Baby brain! I would really like to try it again, and I thank you for this review, I think I do need a few of those "keys".
I've read some other 18th century novels, so it's not just the language, it's definitely the stuff you talked about, the constant digressions and losing the thread.
I don't think I made it past the part where he was born LOL
I don't know how many times I've had to read Tristram Shandy before I "got" it. What finally did it for me was writing my Master's thesis on it. Is it worth persisting? Definitely!
Reading now. So far, makes sense that Kerouac liked Shandy, or so I’ve read. Very informative video.

I don't know about this book. Seems like scholars have over analyzed this novel. My take was that Sterne's goal was to troll everybody by writing a "nonsense novel." Even the title is incredibly misleading. Tristram is barely in the book 😂! A more appropriate title would be "Anecdotes of Uncle Toby and My Father."
