- Learn To Play Drums In 90 Days:
If you’re a new drummer, you may not have always had an ear for picking out exactly what the drums are doing in each song. Or maybe you can hear the differences, but you may not know exactly which drum is making which sound.
The drums are responsible for helping most different styles of music sound distinct from each other, so as a new drummer, you should understand the basics of some of the most popular genres so you can decide which you’d like to focus on. And if you want to be a working drummer (or a cover band drummer), you’ll need to get familiar with many styles.
Many new drummers start by learning rock music, but there are other styles you may not realize are just as newbie-friendly. In this video, you’ll learn the basics of five other drumming styles to help you find yourself as a player. You can download the play-along tracks for all 5 styles for free on this page here:
www.drumeo.com/beat/5-styles-...
0:00 - Introduction
1. 0:36 - Funk
If you aren’t familiar with this style, check out artists like James Brown, Herbie Hancock, The Meters, and Tower of Power. Think of this first groove like a basic rock beat, but where you shift the snare back by a 16th note so it falls on the ‘a’ of beat 1.
Next, try adding this simple fill to transition on the 3 and 4.
2. 03:19 - Blues
Get inspiration from Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Albert King, Muddy Waters, all iconic blues artists. This groove consists of 8th note triplets on the hi-hats, with a backbeat on the snare and bass drum.
3. 05:38 - Jazz
Jazz is defined by legends like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. You can start playing jazz with a basic ride pattern (also known as the swing pattern). Play the quarter note on beats 1 and 3, and two 8th note triplets on beats 2 and 4. When you’re ready, add in the hi-hat foot on 2 and 4.
For a subtle fill, add a light snare hit on the last triplet of beat 3 and the downbeat of beat 4.
4. 08:18 - Country
Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, Jason Aldean, and Rascal Flatts should all be on your list of influential country artists of the last several decades. This is a train beat - very popular in country music - that consists of alternating single strokes (like a slow drum roll) on the snare drum and quarter notes on the bass drum. Accent each ‘and’ with your lead hand (usually your right hand).
Now add in a fill by continuing the motion you were already doing, but move the last two notes to the floor tom. Keep the bass drum going through the fill.
5. 11:15 - Bossa Nova
This Afro-Brazilian style is best exemplified by artists like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, Paul Desmond, and Joao Gilberto. The bass drum pattern is key in this style - it’s usually echoed by the bass player - and the kick falls on the 1, the ‘and’ of 2, the 3, and the ‘and’ of 4. Next, add in the hi-hat. Lastly, you’ll add a basic cross-stick pattern on beats 2 and 4 (where you hit the rim of the snare instead of the head).

Jazz at first is okay when you're just starting out but when you're getting deeper into that genre OH BOY you're in for a ride
haha ride nice1
Definitely quite the rabbit hole!

i would say the same about funk
@@ripvanwinkle3363 very true
Even if you're not a beginner.. sometimes it's important to get back to basics.. Great video!
I'm looking forward to going back to the basics. I'm going to have music therapy to help with my Parkinson's. Other programs usually with therapy in different areas. I've never thought I'd play again not so sure yet. The Road free travel, one of the bad things about our disease is hard to tell one. Trying to get me. I saw parts. I saw part of your show today had this is going to be a very workout worthwhile and helpful I wish you were more gems that could offer Parkinson's exercises. I really like to get some rock solid boxing. There is a group in Anchorage which doesn't help much. Lots of questions even when you're many years in the battle. Seems like always to bother us. One of the big things to sleep. Sleeping problems is very common for us. Because your case managers trying to help. Possibly checking into taking a program out here.
Thanks . Looking forward to next segment.. Gp
As someone who plays all of these genres I would have loved this when I started.
Thanks for checking it out. I'm glad you approve!
What blows me away is that I've been a drummer for many years, and just realized the necessity of this basic kind of practice. And just how vital it is to need to know how to bossa nova and do county shuffle...
Because in both I was hearing new and fresh fills and intro pieces. It was like remembering something you've never heard before.
And being able to take it with you afterward...
Skins never seem to leave us entirely. Need more programs. The best way public awareness??
Honestly, my jazz drummer lads and lasses, I respect you guys the most in the community. You guys really do some crazy stuff
Very help full please upload videos like this👍👍👍

@Rob Brown. Marking my spot in history
Good video. As a beginner, i have learnt my first jazz beat and country train beat.
Like the jazz-part. Thank you!
Thank you!Very much appreciated.Your one of the few teachers who can break it all the way down for a beginner such as myself to understand, start practice right away.Another little step forward to reach my goal to become an intermediate drummer.
This is extremely helpful, even for intermediate players. Thanks Drumeo, awesome video
Thank you 😊. I liked the Jazz and the Funk Parts most.
Thanks🥰🥰 for this great lessons
Aye, I finally know how to play the drum really well, thank to you🖤
I love the country train beat..Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues.
Jeez that was a great clear lesson, thanks mate
Simple but very crucial concept,, it’s the cook book for every drummer to start on the right track
Great lesson. Very useful and easy.

Love the Drumeo Tshirt
Really enjoyed this video, especially the blues part!
This is awesome, Thanks!
Can't wait to get home from work to try this video out.. drumeo is a sick channel
Drumeo's best presenter! Your references were spot on. I thought you'd go into hip hop, but it's roots are in funk, so you passed the test there! You know your stuff and I always feel privileged when you're presenting ideas to us. I REALLY liked the breakdown of the country train beat! I need more right hand independence for my hi hat grove patterns because I love funk music the most! Will buy the book, I promise.
It was a good explanation. Thanks.
Loved it 😍😍🔥🔥🔥
Thanks a lot!🤟🥁💥❤
That funk beat sounded awesome, even though it was really basic! It shows that sometimes less is more.
Pretty much if you can master these basics, you're good to go in a wedding / covers band. As you get on, you can add more sauce and flair
Awesome video thanks Drumeo
Great video! I am a guitarist but even I found this helpful. 👍
i started playing classic rock, and im still playing classic rock - but it's so diverse that it's easy to just devote myself to it
Awesome Brandon🥁👍
great video man, thanks. ma fav iz country music
great simple video but.. most importantly... showing new drummers how timing plays a huge part in their future
Whenever I play, whether it's by myself or with the church band, I tend to rush and get ahead. So this is super helpful, just getting back to the basics of drumming and the core. It doesn't hurt to to get back to simple.
I’m a beginner and this is very helpful!
Thats the reason why I m here . Thanks ( greetings fro germany )
It was very interesting for me to see all 5 styles that are new to me as a beginner drummer but I really enjoyed the funk, jazz and bossa nova. Thanks you are a very good teacher to make thise styles accessible for new drummer like me 😊

learned drums in greece in the 90s, doing Dante Agostinis metido, we Learned jazz, rocj & samba in the first year.
Excellent! Thank you very much. Just remember the 3PsF rule (forf EVERY instrument) - Practice, Practice, Practice and FUN" - the instant it stops being enjoyable/fun, time for a break.
Thanks a lot :D
Jazz and Basa Nova are one that I thought were for professional level. I am excited to see how it’s done; I just have to take it slow.
Thanks

Hello lol i love your Channel
Favorite video?
Like the video.
P.S, you guys should have 65 drums for the edrum videos. Just a thought.
As a very begginer I really enjoyed the video! :D I was able to do the grooves and the fills but only at 60bpm xD When you play with the music Im like, well cool... lets move to the next beat...
Awesome! Keep at it!
How are you doing now
@@Jeovaunihunter Much better! xD I think now I could do it :P Even not practicing every week cause of work. Thanks for asking :)
@@miguelabc7766 no problem man
That ain’t no bossa! 🐅💨
I knew I wasn't the only one missing the clave pattern. If it still counts as a bossa nova beat it couldn't possibly be simplified any further. I used to struggle keeping the bass pattern along with the five clicks for yeeears, I'd keep missing at least one thump so often.
What kind of Ride cymbal do you have? It sounds beautiful
Istanbul Agop 24” Joey Waronker Ride!
@Brandon Toews
Thank you
Do more videos
Where do i go from here
Need 5 style for advanced drummer lesson... Plzzzz plzzzz plzzzzz
Why does the Funk Beat sound a lot like the beat from "Mr. Brownstone"?
Damn, those cymbals sound amazing. Could please give me details on sizes and series?
From left to right: 15” Traditional Light Hats, 20” Traditional Dark Crash, 24” Joey Waronker Ride, 22” Traditional Original Ride. All Istanbul Agop!
@@BrandonToews Thank you sir.
Nace
Blues - triplet - also 6/8 Notation?
It could also be written in 12/8 (common feel for blues)!
As an old guy and a long time drummer, this is very good. What model Istanbul cymbal is the ride?
24" Joey Waronker Signature ride!
Jazz
Check out my new drum cover!!🤪

Love you too ♥
It wasn't an easy decision but I chose funk as my favourite. 😬
Good choice :D
My favourite genre is rock 100% but Pop and Funk are way more fun to play along to.
Wass up people
🙏🙇🙏
I will start soon With A Calsbro csd 600 so that My Neighbors will not Kill me Or Hate me When I start to Practice 😂
