Part 2 - Dumpster Diving on College Move Out Weekend!! Crazy Haul!

  • Ahhh I can't believe all of the perfectly good items that were thrown away by students moving out for the semester!! We found SO much diving at the college dorms - after just an hour we had to go home to unload before we could keep going! I really would love to see universities providing an alternative to dumpsters - there is absolutely no reason there couldn't be donation trucks and stations set up around campus. We could be saving so much for the landfill and teaching the students a valuable lesson at the same time. It's a shame how much is thrown away, but I hope my video can shine light and help make change.
Thank you so much for watching and stay tuned for part 3!!! Happy Diving!

My granddaughter goes to UNC Chapel Hill. She says most of what is thrown away is by foreign students who fly in to North Carolina and then have to have stuff for their room but then cannot take it back home with them. So a group of local students formed a thrift organization that puts out collection boxes for all of the stuff that these kids (and any others) want to give away and they take care of recycling or donating. They also encourage all students to rescue anything in the boxes that they can use. I think it's a great plan!

Thumbs up for the students taking care of recycling.
I wondered why there were so many personal items. Makes sense to fly home light, ( foreign students). I thought it was because most people just can't be bothered to move everything from place to place.

That is a great plan. In addition to that each dorm could have a place where people could just leave the usable furniture and then when someone moves in they could go and pick out some useful furniture for free

At several of the Univ. and Colleges here in AZ the schools have arranged for Salvation Army and other non profit thrift stores to be on campus for move out. It is amazing what they get and really large furnishings, kitchen appliances and amazing amounts of clothing etc. I admire who ever thought of this and arranged it to be done.

Park your truck where you can step up on the tailgate and look inside the dumpster then just get up on the side of the truck and get into the dumpster. That way when you find something you can set it down in the truck without getting out of the dumpster.

What great treasures saved from the landfill! I think one of the last classes every student should have to take is a class theat involves working at the landfill, seeing how much can be reused or upscaled and made to a list of what they're not going to take with them when they leave and how they can put it to good use, not throw it in the trash. Maybe adults need this class too! You are both awesome and I love watching you! Please be careful and stay safe! ❤❤

It wasn’t something real fancy; but our neighbor across the street threw away 2 nightstands that we grabbed as all we had was 2 single mattresses on the floor; at least until his Buddy drove us to an Italia mattress factory where we bought a new mattress for less than $125. American.

I saw foam padding in the big dumpster. Maybe I’m the only one who finds a use for this so let me recommend: I made my desk chair more comfortable with a piece I cut; I cut a small piece to place against my ankle bone when wearing my boots to prevent painful rub; I have a sheet of thick foam on my small bed; and I make my own hair-bands by cutting foam to glue on some hairband frames to cover with fabric.

Kids throw away so much at move out because they don't want to take anything home but clothing and electronics and just buy it all again the next year! I bet you saw a lot of cheap shower flip flops also. LOL! Just keep throwing it in the truck and go through it at home. I move stuff with the pole and hook/grab boxes and bags with the hook. The grabber isn't strong enough to shove stuff around. Game changer, I promise. At the university where our daughter went, there were a lot of exchange students. Move out day they filled the dumpster with everything out of their rooms because they couldn't take it back with them. We ask them if we could have some of the items before they threw it in the dumpster and they gave it to us. But there are still so many students that just don't seem to realized they will probably use it again at some time. There were lots of students that made sure to sit the good items out by the dumpster for others to get.
Our daughter brought all of her things home and for sure used them in her first home. It would be so nice if the colleges would arrange for a non profit to pick up all of these usable items.

    Factor meals are pretty good.
If you police the dumpsters regularly you know how long stuff has been left in the open.
I rescued about a dozen Factor meals last September, got them before they got warm and I froze them immediately.
I ate them for lunch at work, with no ill effects.

I knew when that van pulled up, it was an 'uh-oh' moment; I am glad you two stayed the course, to see what else you could find! It's horribly wasteful what students ('have to') throw away, because they have to move out.

I’ve cleaned several large area rugs by taking them outside and hosing them down. I’ve used a variety of spray on cleaners. Wash and rinse. Drape it over something like a fence and let it dry.

It would be great if the schools would have a spot for the students to leave items for the next year students. The schools could let the students leave the furniture in their rooms and have someone have the job of making sure the stuff is in good useable condition. That's such a horrible waste. Thanks for saving all you do.

I completely agree with you about the responsibility of the university. As one person commented about organizing thrift groups, at the university level would a big step forward. You could have used one of those foam toppers for the ottoman cushion as you can tell when the toppers are soiled. I used those for great dog beds with fabric pinned together and not sewn. Easy to take off and wash. You still got some good stuff though I would just take some of those bags and sort later. The rugs could be used outdoors. To restart the engine of your car takes 10 seconds of gas...just saying. Amazing how much you salvaged. Thanks for dragging us along!

Good team work Kelly and Alex!! Wow, what these kids have to throw out is crazy, too bad they can't sell or give it away before flying home. Nobody should ask you to leave when your just picking things out that are only going to the Landfill. Good findings guys. Thanks for sharing, stay safe out there.

You find such good useful stuff. I know we are a disposable society but this is so wasteful. I live near UF in Gainesville, Fl and now they ask the students to put the stuff out to be picked up by Goodwill. Sal. Army, etc. A lot less waste but a lot less goodies for me.

Love the longer ones and don’t think I can watch anymore if Alex goes back to work lol j/k of course but love it when you two work together. He is such a good guy. You should do a q&a curious how long you both have been together

Many colleges used rubber soccer balls in the 1970s, in a lot of their games.
These would be the ultimate trash to treasure find for me.
I would not care how worn they are or if they were flat. The fact they are old (1970s) and were used in actual games make them valuable to me.
I would pay easily $100 for one. As long as it did not have dry rot, is the only deal breaker.
Who would have ever thought old rubber soccer balls could be worth anything!
