  • Wow we were in the right place at the right time with these dumpsters! I’m so glad we drove by and spotted how full they were - it’s wild how many school supplies, toys, workbooks, and general classroom supplies had been tossed. Everything that we rescued will be given to a local teacher so that hopefully more students can enjoy these items and they don’t have to go to the landfill (where they certainly don’t belong)!
As always, thank you so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day! Happy diving xoxo

I’m a teacher and this dive hits me especially hard. Why in the world would all this be in the dumpster? I’ve seen several things that I’ve had to purchase with my own money for my classroom. And I always save leftover school supplies and carry them over to the following year or years. This waste is unacceptable. I’m so glad you guys are out saving this stuff.

As a teacher this makes me sad! Just take the time to sort thru so you can reuse!! There are always teachers looking for supplies. Also all that sanitizer 😭😭 I had to buy multiple new sanitizers for the end of the year because I ran out! Imagine just throwing them out with no remorse.

As a retired teacher from low income school this makes me sad as well. I use to spend a 1000 or more on books, manipulate, supplies, etc. At end of year we would put reusable items under a breezeway and teachers would shop. Leftovers were brought to local thrift store. Thanks for saving what you could. God bless you.

I am a retired teaching assistant of 25 years, and it sickens me to see what you are pulling out of the trash!! This never happened at my school district. What children did not take home, what teachers did not want, either went to our summer schools or was donated to districts who did not have the resources we did. Thank you, Kelly and Alex, for what you do. God bless.

Oh how well I know about the waste by teachers and students who dump everything at the end of the school year! I would retrieve what I could for use the next school year when my students didn’t have supplies! But it was interesting when colleagues (who wouldn’t mess with items) would run short during the year, would send a student to my classroom to ask if I could share my extras. Those colleagues wouldn’t spend an extra minute when school was out to organize for the next year. They couldn’t be bothered! I’m retired and still disgusted at the waste and lack of caring.

Par for the course, eh Marcia. Haste makes waste, particularly in the case of the teachers you mention. I do not tolerate waste myself. Re-generate/compost, re-cycle, upcycle, re-utilize. If we truly give a flying fig about our earth, we need to do the best we can for it, as well as for ourselves. Bad things succeed, when good men to do nothing.

And they bleed parents dry making them buy tons of supplies that doesn't even get used. One year I asked one teacher why do I have to buy 12 boxes of tissue. She said its so the kids who can't buy any will have some. I do not mind helping other people especially children but I needed help back then too. I only bought what my children would possibly use after that. That school supply money was coming out of my grocery money and there wasn't much of that.

With all the teachers having to use their own money to supplement supplies during the year, one would think the school could create an area (closet or something) where all of this could be stored for use by teachers in the 2022-2023 school year. This waste breaks my heart....for the teachers.....the parents and mostly for the .....STUDENTS!
    I spy a broom. 🤣
UPDATE: As I'm a dumpster diver since 14, after watching this video and reading the replies below, I'm going to build a "teaching supply box" (similiar to a blessing box). I live near 2 elementary schools and would love to be able to give back. I'm so in awe of teachers. My hero is my great aunt who was a 1st grade teacher (1923 thru 1967 death in classroom - she sent kids outside because she felt weird, then suffered a fatal stroke). My 3rd grade teacher is still my inspiration 59 years later. Sorry for any typos - new keyboard & nails.

As a retired teacher, I appreciate your efforts to save useful items from the dumpster. Many of the things you collected were a variety of "counters"...shapes used to help kids add and subtract by counting objects. Even the bugs can be used as counters. The others can also be used for sorting into shapes, sizes, colors, etc. The books might be useful to homeschool parents. Schools usually have specific texts adopted for use in the district, so the books you found were probably out of date, or may have been replaced. But the books can be useful to kids' summer programs to help keep lessons fresh over the summer. I can assure you that much of the "extras" were bought by teachers out of their own money. Nice work!

In the school district that I work in, the district supplies everything except their backpacks and those are given away at citywide events. Our students are even given chrome books and chargers that they end up destroying for the most part. We supply pencils, markers, paper, journals, notebooks, folders everything they could possibly need. The majority of the kids don't take care of these items because their parents don't have to dish out any money at all. Kids will go through 3 or 4 pencils a day because they figure they will get another one next period.

Bless you for saving all these supplies! I worked in the schools for years and every year this happened. I used to dumpster dive after hours and save so much then the following year I’d donate it during registration and the head office person would give it to students in need. Many families won’t ask for help but students would often show up with no supplies. It really helped many students. It was a small school. I can’t ever bear to think of how much a large school wastes.
One year one school threw away working sewing machines Ugg I was so mad. We had just had them fixed and had used them just months earlier. It seemed the only reason was because they wasn’t being currently used.

It breaks my heart for the kids that don’t have but have to rely on others to get what they need..You guys are a true Angel here on Earth and a Beautiful Blessing to all of us... I’m sorry for writing so much but when I seen those dumpsters over flowing I seen red...Any way thank you and also thank you for cleaning up that huge mess. That’s one thing I’ve noticed about Alex he’s always cleaning up and I want him to know that I appreciate what he’s doing, not too many would clean all that in the hot boiling 🌞 sun....

After buying my kids the items on the school list, my son came home from school and told me the teacher took everything. The kids were given what they needed. Kleenex, paper and other stuff was put into the supply closet. A box of kleenex was set on the teacher's desk for students to use. The teacher then handed out paper and whatever else, as needed. When I asked Why, I was told " because some kids don't have anything" I truly wish that someone would have guts enough to speak to stores that toss stuff as garbage, let them know that paper, glue, crayons, anything like that would be appreciated. My sister-in-law is a janitor at a elementary school. They have a table set up in the school for anyone to take whatever is on it. She got us quite a few kitchen supplies. Including a hand mixer. Such a shame to just discard everything and then have to buy brand new next time. Take care 🙂❤

At some grade levels teachers will put the supplies away in large ziplock bags for the child’s later use because some children, usually little boys would have their pencils all sharpened down to little nubs and their erasers broken and poked full of holes in less than a week. Avoiding table work by continuous pencil sharpening is a real thing.

I have been teaching for over 20 years. Over those years I have easily spent thousands of dollars on supplies for my room (folders, notebooks, books for my library, work books…). I also buy pencils which I have personally observed students breaking and leaving them on the floor. These same student will then ask for a pencil for the next class. Some of those books might be outdated. That being said, they could have been donated to new teachers or maybe ESL or SPED teachers (I am a special education teacher so I use whatever will help my students). Just because something is old or “outdated,” it still has value. I cannot even tell you how many books that are no longer in use there are stored in book rooms and closets. They just sit there because no one knows what to do with them. This happens whenever someone thinks they found a new and improved curriculum and much of what is being used now is online. What you found in the dumpsters was wasteful and it just seemed like the stuff was thrown away because it was easier to do that than sort it and/or donate. Not all teachers are like that.

Here in the UK teachers have to buy the majority of supplies out of their own money as the school budget just isn't enough.
Crazy that we can't ensure our children have the tools to learn yet we can put people in prison through college courses etc.
Or MPs get paid to sign their name in the attendance book in the house of Lords but don't have to stay around to contribute or listen to what's been proposed.
    Madness...utter madness.
Well done for all the hard work you do. It'll serve those children and others well.x

That set of laminated papers are flashcards and other things that were laminated but never even cut out to use! Crazy! Your haul looks like the faculty room at my school at the end of the year. I always love grabbing from those piles for the next year! Unfortunately a lot of books like the ones you found are thrown out when a new curriculum is adopted. There just isn't room to keep it all. It's a shame more can't be donated, though.

Another source for good diving is senior residences. A friend of mine recently moved into one. These are federally funded apts for independent seniors. Not assisted living or nursing homes. Anyway, when a resident moves out or dies any personal belongings/furnishings left behind go to the dumpster. I scored a beautiful floor lamp. You guys might want to look into it as a lot of really good stuff is going to the landfill.

Good for you cleaning up a lot of the mess at those school dumpsters. It would be neat if you found a first year teacher who needed to start a class from scratch to give these supplies to. In order to figure out which direction the shelf should hang look at which side has the most dust on it. The side with the most dust goes up.
