Playing an EMG Gramophone

- I was recently requested to make a video of what I never show in my videos - the winding, the sharpening the thorn needle, then the magic sound from the EMG horn. I chose one of my favourite discs - Beniamino Gigli sings "Ingemisco" (from Verdi's Requiem) on Victor Red Seal record 17584-A, played on an EMG Mark Xb Oversize gramophone with a Meltrope III soundbox and a Burmese Colour Needle. Recorded August 1939 at the Royal Opera House in Rome, with the orchestra conducted by Tullio Serafin.

Fine presentation, legendary machine... and Gigli has never sounded better. Extraordinary technology!
This must be the finest acoustic sound reproduction possible.
If I'm not mistaken, it actually is (not taking into account the few sound generations lost because of using a needle made out of an acustic isolator). Using a burmese needle bypasses most stratches and sharp points of the grooves, reducing background noise but also sounding muffled
@@jonathandemiguel1458 Revelation !!! now i understand ! thank you
The transparent sound as reproduced on this EMG is nothing short of breathtaking ! Thank you so much ! This wonderful recording -demonstrating so well all the beautiful qualities and unfortunate mannerisms of Gigli's singing - is part of a complete recording of Verdi's Requiem Mass. It is a wonderful set, including Ebe Stignani, Ezio Pinza and Maria Caniglia singing with Gigli.
I have the entire set!!
And all this without electricity and then such a powerful sound. I could imagine that this gramophone was really expensive at one time.
They still command very hefty prices!
@@BassetHoundTrio I can well imagine that, because this gramophone is a really noble device.
Awesome video, if I ever start a band I’m going to name it “Burmese Colour Needle “ !
Very informative, and a real joy to see the equipment. Plus: A record and sound to die for....
Graham horn it's the best now.Thank you for informing about this.
He is to be thanked for what he did for all of us who love 78 rpm records.
Regards Peter
If I had to listen to music like that, my head would explode! And on this player!😂
Lovely little “behind the scenes” peak with one of the greatest machines ever built. Rarified air! Thanks for sharing :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Frankly marvellous! If you don’t mind me asking, where did you acquire this fine piece of technology, and by any chance, if you know, how might I acquire one myself?
Shipped from England! They are quite rare - keep an eye on the British auction sites.

Amazing! Thank you for posting! A true beauty your machine...
Many thanks! Perhaps some day I'll do another describing how acoustic gramophones work, a short history of EMG...
Such an illuminating video! And the recording is so outstanding. Thank you!
I recently acquired Jussi's record of this - will have to post it soon!
Fantastic sound quality on this video, my friend, and great to see you! :)
Treasure gramophone, treasure recording! Thanks for sharing. It sounds as pure as a CD.
What a superb video dear pal! Congratulations on finding a Universal sharpener, and thank you so much for showing the thorn needle. As others have said, the sound (as always in your wonderful productions) is exquisite. Joy forever, with EMGs!
Many thanks! I recently found the sharpener on Canadian Craigslist! Paid a fortune, of course. But worth it to sharpen the best needles on the planet!
@@BassetHoundTrio Oh bless you! It's a pleasure and honour to be the custodian of them at present... 🧐
Are you using a Mallinson sharpener?
@@malcolmsmith650 The sharpener shown in the video is a Universal. The MAL (Miles Mallinson) is a similar design but a little larger.
Glorious sound!
Wow, what a voice. My late father’s favourite tenor and I can understand why.
You would think from then till now Music has failed in many ways ..Autotune Pay to play etc etc I can see myself outside on a stoop with a lemonade some where warm in the world ...Thankfully with youtube I was able to hear your wonderful gramophone...So thank you for the upload
Do you own any Billie Holiday or Robert Johnson recordings ? Carter family ? By the way...that Caruso singing Verdi without surface noise...is pretty fucking unbelievable ! i didn't know such 78s existed !!! 😛 thank you for posting...this is the one link to the pre-vinyl LP era I'm still missing. Kudos
I have but one Billie Holiday record as of now - but would certainly like more. Cheers and thanks for the comments!

So good to see you on camera at last! ;)
Glad to have found you. Just subscribed.
Would love to try these needles and a sharpener, too!
Welcome! If you search eBay for a Peter Greys sharpener, those are good as relatively easy to find, though I have always had to drill the chuck to make it large enough for most of the needles; they are available from www.burmesecolourneedles.com/ and are great. They don't work well on worn discs, but are superb one discs in excellent condition. Cheers!
Beautiful demo!
Thank you!
Whoa!!!!!
Superb!
Never heard a sound like this on a grammophone!
EMG gramophones are just amazing. The sound is so natural and life-like. Many thanks for your comment!
@@BassetHoundTrio No problem! Amazing is amazing.Greatings from Germany!
@@gerobrauer4599 Greetings from Chicago! Tschüß!
Wonderful! You rarely see needle sharpeners in action anymore.
The way it was meant to be.
Fun to see someone else doing the 'dirty work' for a change haha!
You found a Universal sharpener it seems?,wonderful record too
Yes! A recent find on Craigslist in Canada!
Great sound for acoustic machine. Electric recording, it seems..
Yes, electric - recorded in 1939.
This is such a treat! Is it rude to ask what mic (and other recording equipment) you are using? and where you place it in the room? Asking for a friend ;-)
Not at all! I use a Zoom H4 recorder (the H2 would likely be as good and less expensive) as the microphones, which I plug into a Canon 5D MkII digital SLR that has video capability. I use a long (15’) mini-cable to go from the headphone jack on the Zoom to the microphone input on the camera. I have the zoom about 12’ feet from the horn. If the sound is distorted on your videos, lower the headphone jack volume on the Zoom. Let me know if you have any more questions!
@@BassetHoundTrio Very many thanks for this superb recording. Your videos are the best on the planet from any acoustic gramophone and it is interesting to note the presence of the hard wooden floor of your lovely room which, in my opinion, produces a slight lift or reverberation compared to the equivalent in a carpeted room. Your video recording equipment and attention to detail is also truly wonderful. Many congratulations and looking forward so much to future postings.
@@grahamrankin This apprentice is greatly humbled to receive praise from The Master! Yes, I do think the hardwood floors add some reverberation to the acoustic. One friend suggested I do another video explaining just how an acoustic gramophone works. Just might do that someday!
Delightful sound. What is the wall thickness of the horn?
It is a little bit over 1/8" thick.
What is the horn material ?
The curved portion is cast aluminum, with a bronze connector, and the large portion is fibreglass, whereas the original used layers of paper.
How old is this one
The base unit is circa 1934. The horn was re-manufactured in July, 2007.
