Have you checked out Core Knowledge History? I love their student readers. My kids are a bit younger so I can only speak to the K-2nd grade units, but definitely worth checking out!
Yes we loved CK! That's actually what we used for our Viking and early explores units. Fantastic program!
This is how I was game planning history this year but felt like I was just “winging it” with the topics and spent entirely too much time googling when certain time periods were 😅…buying the e-version of the resource from Common Sense press now! It’s exactly what I need! Thanks for sharing!

I'm using some of Little School of Smith's units for the extra activities as well this year.

What do you use to cover the main timeline points? You said there are some picture books that will be the spines, are those intended to teach the main timeline points?
The history pockets and LAHTL provide the information for the major points. I pull different books from that period to discuss the happenings.
