That is the benefit of the break room, removes a spell from the pool so it can't be targeted by things like doubling. Would of been useful in the second round of the tournament.
Oh Looks like it also works for removing curses too.

Damn that's smart! I mostly considered the departments that grow stronger with each spell used (later in the game), and I also had a special duel in the first demo where you had to lose all your health to win, and if you left spells unused they would damage your opponent (so throwing them away through break department was a smart thing to do!)
I also wanted workers to have a break room
