    Finally, an analysis on the most underated character in three houses. While Everyone talks about your lysitheas, your marrianes, your Lorenzs(I’m sure you noticed I may be a golden deer) and the house leaders, nobody talks about the best boy in the game(I will not back down from this point). It’s part of why I really appreciated this video. Also yeah, I noticed the codependency with dedue and dimitri, but I feel that codependency can also be applied to edelgard and rhea, characters who rely on others to keep themselves in check. I really like the fact that this is the first fire emblem game where the lord saying they depend on their friends isn’t just lip service, rather it’s actually true, especially in the case of McDonald’s haircut man(seriously dimitri’s haircut is just the M on the McDonalds logo and I’m happy he loses it after the time skip because I can take eye patch man more seriously than the McDonalds brand ambassador being driven nuts by his step sister, don’t take that out of context). Sorry for the long tangent, point being, nice analysis on an under appreciated character

    Dedue is crippled with internalized, institutionalized, ideological, and interpersonal oppression. It's incredibly sad to see. Many people view Dimitri and Dedue's friendship as ideal, but when you truly look through it and relate to Dedue, it can be disturbing. Such loyalty isn't stemmed from something wholesome, it is stemmed by gruesome poor treatment. Dedue is really one of those characters you cannot truly understand without relating to them. I agree with what you said, they are, in a way, toxic. I wish we could have seen more of Dedue learning to value his own emotions, it would have been a wonderful change in character. I often see people romanticize or sexualize the way he responds to his oppression, and honestly, it unnerves me.

      100% agree. Dedue definitely suffers from internalised oppression, which I could’ve been more explicit about, in hindsight. I suspect the romanticism of Dedue and Dimitri’s relationship comes from flat out not noticing its problematic elements. Which is.... somewhat disconcerting, but I get it. And yeah, he was totally shafted in terms of his personal development in-game

      While I wouldn’t really call it toxic. I agree that it is definitely bad. For the first time dedue finds someone that is being nice to him, and understandably latches on and doesn’t let go. Dimitri genuinely cares about dedue, but because dedue only really acts semi ok around him, dimitri has no clue how stunted dedue really is socially, at least at first

    18:33 FUCKING YES, THIS. I get that Byleth is the hero/main character, but that whole scene with him in the rain is practically SCREAMING for that warm hand to be DEDUE's, not Byleth. His return and his presence should've been what snapped Dimitri out of it... but no, they had to do him dirty yet again. I don't know if you've played Three Hopes, but I'd be curious to see a Dedue followup video based on that alternate universe, as I think his treatment (and the treatment of Duscur as a whole) is surprisingly much better than this main game.

    • @SomasCorner
      @SomasCorner  2 роки тому +7

      Yeah, totally agreed. That scene would’ve hit so much harder if it was him. Him basically coming back from the dead to save Dimitri would’ve been amazing. So close yet so far…
      I’ve only finished Golden Wildfire so far, but now you’ve said that, I’m curious. I’m planning on doing a video on each story, so I imagine I’ll get to Dedue again at some point!

      They should had changed it so Dedue disappears in the start of the war phase but returns regardless of the War for the Weak paralogue (but make it worth doing by having Dedue return with an Axe of Zoltan or something like that). This would have made the writing set up where Dedue's return brings Dimitri to his senses with Rodrigue and Gilbert's aid.

    Dude, thank you so much for making this. I feel like the fandom has never really taken Dedue all that seriously as a character, probably because the game completely undermines his narrative importance as you said. People seem to forget that Dedue is as much Dimitri's reason for living as it is the other way around,.
    Like you said, people often just see him as this "pure defender" of Dimitri, but I think reducing him down to such simple traits denies him the complexity of other characters. Dedue's place in the Blue Lions, particularly in complicating Dimitri's relationships, I think is an underrated part of his character. He stands in between Dimitri and Ingrid, as Ingrid is still mourning Glenn and uses her hate for people from Duscur to cope. He stands in between Dimitri and Felix's life-long bond as well, as while Felix sees the darkness in Dimitri and abhors it, Dedue enables it, as he sees himself worthy of only looking after him. Once again, awesome video. Hopefully you do more character analyses in the future!

    Dedue is a victim of genocide who got adopted by one of the genociders.
    After the timeskip Dedue and Dimitri share a deep friendship/love for each other but before that their realationship is really Complicated.

    I find myself reminded of Scar and Roy Mustang from FMA, weirdly enough. Namely, the scene where Scar helps talk Roy of the ledge by asking if a country can be saved by a man imprisoned by his own rage. If the Felix/Dedue supports (since Felix seems to be the only one willing to call Dimitri out on acting like a lunatic) had something like that, I'm genuinely curious what affect that would have on Dedue
