Countdown has been around since 1982. It was licensed from an identical French show that has been on since 1965. At night channel 4 has merged their comics show 8 of 10 cats into a hilarious version of countdown called 8 of 10 cats do countdown. Both versions are a lot of fun. The closest we have is wheel of fortune.
I have to admit Des sounds a lot more lively in this episode. He seemed bored. It's a shame he clearly hated Carol and she hated him. Hence why he never returned until she stopped presenting. I saw he complimented Carol and she replied back with "oh do I thank you" very coldly and not looking at him. It was clear they hated each other. Which must have been strange as how well she got on with Richard
In the first three rounds, I tied the contestants for six with RATTAN, beat them with an eight with POTAGERS (a word synonymous with kitchen gardens), and got SPHEROID for eight. I'm surprised Susie didn't pick up on it, because it fell out very naturally from the arrangement of letters, IMO.
When Des Lynam hosted Countdown, he always seemed very wooden, ill at ease at spoke in a very monotonous voice which was all a world away from the charisma he was known for in his sports presenting work. I put it down to his age, but seeing him as a guest he's got all that old spark and I so wish he'd been able to bring more of that relaxed yet energetic bounce to the show when he hosted. I always got the impression he was bored and felt out of place.
Actually (since I'm adding & including the Countdown Masters & Specials) Countdown hit Episode 5000 in early Series 61 on Monday 6th July 2009, and this is episode 5151 as of Wednesday 10th November 2010 in Series 63.

When I was a little boy I used to be always watching this with my grandparents, those were the Richard Whiteley years.
My own secondary school teacher appearing on this episode! There was a much earlier episode when my grandfather was a contestant himself.

I agree, I totally thought it was made up. I’ve watched all the seasons four times and I finally decided to google and see if it was real.
Strange that two of the greatest ever British sporting presenters were finally on screen together... on a daytime quiz show.

Can’t believe Des didn’t like Carol. The reason why Des left was because he lived too far away from the studios.
