As an Australian, that was hilarious. Like the Tasmanian Tiger, the emu was hunted to extinction in Tasmania and two dwarf species also suffered the same fate. On mainland Australia the emu population is actually higher than it was prior to European settlement. Current estimates put emu numbers across the country at between 500,000 and 900,000. The emu was the first bird species that was verified as producing genetically identical twins. The emu holds the land speed record for birds travelling at 31 miles (50 km) per hour. Emus breed during the cooler months with the parents staying together for about 5 months. Females lay from 5 to 15 eggs and once the incubation process begins the male becomes aggressive driving away any other emus including his mate. The eggs hatch after about 55 days and during this time the male guards the eggs and will not leave them. The young emus will stay with their father for about 6 months and will be fully grown at 1 year. At 20 months they are fully mature and can breed. Emu farming is carried out with the products being skin, feathers, meat and oil. Infertile eggs are sometimes 'blown' and used for carving. Despite being a bird, emu meat is considered 'red' meat due to its PH value and colour.
Ok, let’s do something NOT related to pronunciation! The feather hat fixation comes from the branch of the army called Light Horse. Traditionally they wore (and still wear) an emu plume in their slouch hats. Australia’s Light Horse were featured in films such as Gallipoli, The Light Horsemen, 40,000 Horsemen to name a few. The 4th LH Brigade’s Charge at Beersheba is one of their most famous actions, especially the march preceding it. Also, emu plumes were well-used in women’s hats, so any source of supply would be welcomed!
The movie film clip of that charge might be a good video for Ryan. Only needs the clip to follow it, no context of the whole movie needed, is so poignant what's happening comes through VERY clearly & without any additional footage needed
Emu's (Pronounced Emm-You) was picked for the coat of arms with the Kangaroo as they physical cannot walk backwards, meaning Australia is always moving forwards.
Apparently they sent old machine guns (thus the jamming) and the military actually took their 'defeat' well (thus the jokes about praising the Emus), but as an aussie I still find this hilarious.
@@Rob-fc9wg The army consisted 3 soldiers, two Lewis guns, 10,000 rounds of ammunition, the budget didn't run to a truck, they probably borrowed that from a farmer.
The Emu Plume Slouch hats worn by members of the Armoured Corps are adorned with Emu plumes, a tradition that originated with the Queensland Mounted Infantry during the great shearers’ strike in Queensland in 1891. During this time, the Queensland Mounted Infantry were called out, as soldiers to aid the Civil Power.
Exports of Emu's to the USA took place some years ago because Americans thought they would be a source of low fat, lean meat, this venture did not take off and farmers let a lot go wild, One US park ranger tried to "intercept one" upon having an unfortunate encounter with the birds feet, he was heard to say "Geez they sure can kick".
I thought the exports were for emu oil not meat. Emu oil is still an industry in the US, even in Australia, most emu oil actually comes from the US farms. Emu meat is fat free, but they have a great big lump of fat/oil on their backs that is supposed to have a tonne of health properties

We get a fair bit of Aussie humour over here. My sister had a poster hung up in her lavatory. It depicted an Aussie guy (he had a hat with corks dangling from the brim) in an old wooden outhouse recoiling in utter shock - cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth - as a huge clawed bird's foot is smashing through the door towards him and the caption reads: "May all your fowls turn into emus and kick your dunny down." It was impossible to read it without hearing a "Strayan" accent in your head... The description of the scene should provide ample translation of the language.
It's funny how you say "Happy Arvo". As an Australian I have never used this term in that way. I usually say good afternoon. But I do use the term "this Arvo" eg making an appt with someone and saying "I will see you this Arvo". So you use the term 'Arvo' in a way that I haven't heard in Aus.
Our national animals, on our coat of arms, are the emu and kangaroo. Chosen because they cannot walk backwards to symbolise us always progressing forwards. Both are delicious.
Emus HATE me and will try attack me. Mostly that's not an issue because they are behind a fence but I've been chased and pecked twice by lone emus and charged by a whole group of them when one of them got me. The first emu I saw was in a fauna park. It came right up to the fence and threw up on me. I have had one, only one, emu encounter where they just ignored me like they do other people.
Emu meat is quite tasty.good on a burger. Some of the Australian military used an emu feather in their hats the emu feather have two spines unlike most birds who only have one it comes down to one spine
Ryan, just to put things into perspective it was back in the 1930's when the last giant marsupial carnivore, (Tasmanian Tiger) died in Hobart Zoo. It was also classed as a pest species by the state government and farmers and had a large bounty on its head. ( Even though it was in the middle of the great depression ). Shame Australia Shame.
Emu is definitely not common as a meat, for example, most supermarkets will stock kangaroo, but you wouldn't find emu. Though it definitely is a meat that is eaten around the country. I grew up on Birpai land and ate emu and snake a few times at the local Land council.
Hi Ryan, Emu is pronounced ee-mew and arvo sounds more like ah-vo (less emphasis on the r). The Australian Coat of Arms has a kangaroo on one side and an emu on the other as both of these animals cannot walk backwards. The implication is that Australia will always move forward. Yes, sadly emus and kangaroos are both able to be eaten. I don't know of any other country whose people eat their national animal emblems, lol. Mel Gibson is Australian as is Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue. I really enjoy your content and watch everything you post. I am Australian and an animal advocate and work in a zoo, and in my 45 years I have never heard of any of this and no one else I know has any idea of this either. I don't think it is true, it could be but it's not Australian.
lol - hahahaha - I've never heard this fact but very funny and I will be the first to admit that Australians did do some really stupid things lol - We also put a bounty on the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacines) that was the apex predator along with the Dingo (but the dingo was brought in by man some 40K years ago) although Tasmanian Tiger was not a dog or cat species it was a carnivorous marsupial and the females had a pouch like the Kangaroo but look like a dog with stripes like a tiger - hence the name - the reason we put a bounty was because of the same - same mmm - farmers suspected the poor animal linked to the attack of their sheep (turned out the Tas Tiger was afraid of humans and never ventured close to their property and didn't eat sheep lol) - it was wild dogs and foxes humans brought from Europe gggrrrr The last surviving Tasmanian Tigar was in a Zoo 1930.

The only thing funnier than the Great Emu War is an American pronouncing "emu" as "e-moo", like they're talking about some sort of electronic cow 😂 (For the record, it's pronounced "eem-yew" with the emphasis on the "y" sound--ironically the part Americans usually leave out altogether haha). Love your reactions btw 👍🏻
"e-moo a sort of electronic cow" jeez I cracked up but excellent discripion of American's mispronunciation.
Hey Ryan 👍
Love watching your reactions bro.
Can you please check out
Margaret River Western Australia .
Please 🙏 it's a beautiful country town and it would be awesome to see what you think. ☺️☺️
I don't know why, but my absolute favourite part of the video is the "Yes. Good."
Glad you got too this 🤣🤣
Emu feathers are worn on the Army hats, just for clarification.
So you use the term 'Arvo' in a way that I haven't heard in Aus.
magpie is the bird you were saying
Our national animals, on our coat of arms, are the emu and kangaroo. Chosen because they cannot walk backwards to symbolise us always progressing forwards. Both are delicious.
As an Australian, that was hilarious. I never knew
Say G'day instead of happy arvo....EEM YOU....We have to turn you into one of us...That was very entertaining 😅😅
Emu meat is quite tasty.good on a burger. Some of the Australian military used an emu feather in their hats the emu feather have two spines unlike most birds who only have one it comes down to one spine
I've never eaten Emu, but their oil is really good for inflammation! 👍
Happy arvo Ryan! OverSimplified is hilarious, checking out his other stuff. I still love eemoos even if they’re nothing but bullies.
Emus are eaten but it's very oily
I've lived in Australia for over 50 years but was born in Northern Ireland and came here when I was 5 years old. Keep up the great work 🦘🇦🇺
It's actually morning time here
When I was a kid I was at a bbq for Easter and an emu came up and stole my bloody box of crayons. No one believed me and now I hate emus haha
I really enjoyed this one! I had never seen it before.I've come to love Emu's. Do check out the Dust Storms.I think they are as bad as some in Africa, or Sand Storms.
Eem you, eem you!!!!!!!! I know you don't react to these comments, but do you actually read them?
Eem-you, c'mon Ryan. No Australian says happy Arvo, so this is just a Ryan thing, cute ! Dyu ever read the comments, you do put funny stuff on. Hope you can make it over one day, you just won't wanna leave ! G'day mate ! And that's hello ok 😀
So the emu is the national bird and the kangaroo is the national animal because they are the only two animals that can't walk backwards. They are also on our coat of arms :)
I am Australian and an animal advocate and work in a zoo, and in my 45 years I have never heard of any of this and no one else I know has any idea of this either. I don't think it is true, it could be but it's not Australian.
Is Oootah a state in the Norf or Souf?
yes we eat them. look up the menu from the Australian hotel Sydney. you can get an emu pizza.
lol - hahahaha - I've never heard this fact but very funny and I will be the first to admit that Australians did do some really stupid things lol - We also put a bounty on the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacines) that was the apex predator along with the Dingo (but the dingo was brought in by man some 40K years ago) although Tasmanian Tiger was not a dog or cat species it was a carnivorous marsupial and the females had a pouch like the Kangaroo but look like a dog with stripes like a tiger - hence the name - the reason we put a bounty was because of the same - same mmm - farmers suspected the poor animal linked to the attack of their sheep (turned out the Tas Tiger was afraid of humans and never ventured close to their property and didn't eat sheep lol) - it was wild dogs and foxes humans brought from Europe gggrrrr The last surviving Tasmanian Tigar was in a Zoo 1930.
The only war we have ever lost up until now
Fun fact we have an eagle waaaaaaay bigger then the bald eagle and capable of carrying away small sheep also it sees in ultraviolet light.
Never heard about this, very bizarre, but I wouldn't doubt it 🤣🤣
My grandparents had horror stories from the Great Depression...
We chose these particular animals for the national emblem eg: kangaroo and emu because they can’t walk backwards.
Happy arvo Mr emoo
Hi Ryan greetings from Sydney Australia, Can you please watch the American Bald Eagle v the Australian Wedge Tail Eagle and who would win. You can also watch The Battle against the Australian salty Alligator and the American Crocodile its like a fight to see who will win. Kind Regards L
They are still massive pests today. I used to work on a potato farm and there were hundreds of them running around. They dig up and eat the crop as well as damaging it when they ran over them. As for eating… maybe not legally but I can’t say it definitely doesn’t happen 😅
Today you can get a permit to cull if there are too many.
as an emu, learning english was as easy as winning this war
