I sent you an email a while back, and I took your advice. You said “if you want to be a mechanic, then be a mechanic.” Well. I just finished up my first full week as an entry level auto tech. I thank you for making it simple. Just by saying, if you want to do it, then do it. That was all I needed to hear from someone in the industry to get just enough confidence to see if I’ve got what it takes. And so far, I think I do! Thanks man.
I always admired mechanics whenever I’d get my truck worked on. I decided to make this career change-4 months deep and I’m loving every minute of it. Before this, I was in IT and then had a small Trucking business. My best advice is to do the research and buy the tools that make your life easier before you buy expensive tool truck tools. Ask senior mechanics to show you what they use and buy what makes sense. Also, never ever use your hand as a hammer and wear gloves all the time. Put lotion or Vaseline on your arms to keep grease and burned oil out, it’s also a good scratch protectant. Keep a set of earplugs at arms reach when things get loud. Good luck 👍
That is super cool. I remember your email and good luck.
Congratulations! Don’t forget to try and learn something new every week. You’ll go far if you always invest in knowledge.
This is what I like to hear it is always nice to get a straightforward solid answer. Keep up the hard work.
Great Job
I loved my snap-on toolbox but after paying $14,000 for it and some idiot backing a cement mixer into it at work I replaced it with the harbor freight 72 in US general box and had enough money left over to buy a Monte Carlo SS.I will never drop over five figures on a metal box to store my tools again. Your box looks really nice though congratulations. As a professional mechanic people do not seem to take you as serious if you do not have a Snap-On or matco box
Agreed
Second that.
You have bought the best tool box on the planet. There is nothing quite like the Snap On Epiq box. Congratulations! I really liked your walk through of your new box. I really like how different techs imagine the space for their tools and how different lay outs of tools satisfy their needs. Really enjoy your videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge of Cat diesels!
Awesome video with an amazing amount of proper tools and equipment for your trade. Josh you take pride in what you do, it shows in your videos. Thank you for taking us along with you.
I always enjoy the review and comment you give! You can learn so much of what works well and what doesn’t, even when it comes to tools.
I love the idea of the springs for holding tools, I'll give that a try. Thanks for sharing.
Nice setup , I like the spring idea for pliers, I accepted a position with cat in my area starting in mid January , after 20+ years of truck repair I think I'll give a try to the heavy equipment side
I have the same matco box and I’m happy with it I’ve had it for years now never had any issues
So hard to organize a new toolbox and then relearn the new set-up. It's amazing how many tools you need/ collect during your career. I switched to the 84" bottom and top box a few years ago and couldn't believe how hard it was to get used to it. I still end up opening three drawers before finding things. Congratulations on a great purchase.
I already feel the pain. Im going from a 13 drawer Ive had for 20 years to a 10 drawer. It’s going to screw me all up! Lol
Wow, you are awesome and professional. I am providing engine parts to others, but I am still learning the structure of the engine.
Nice tour. The 1 1/2 socket for thermostat seals, same here for over 40 years. Instead of wood chisels for gasket scrapers the guys in this area would get saw mill planer blades. Cool tour!
One of my best tools, I found it on top of a cylinder head. A magnet that is so strong you can not pull it off a I beam with two fingers. Drop something in the oil pan you can drag it over to the drain hole. Around the oil pump it will stay in place do to the oil pump gear. One of my EUI height tools, I cut the lower side off (radiator side) so it fits better. Took a 7/8 deep well socket and cut a hole in it to torque EUI nuts on ACERT engines. Took a broken pocket magnet and attached it to a SOS tube. Made a short nine pin splice so when you hook ET up and you have no power, it has a long power wire with alligator clip to hook to a power source. Most of the time your home made and modified tools are your best, as they make your life easier.
I have a damper turning tool that slides over the damper to turn it, kind of like a sideways pipe wrench. Doesn't damage it, but might scratch the paint, really makes turning the Cats a lot easier.
@@AdeptApe Interesting, I use a long 1/2 drive ratchet with a cut off socket. Made a TDC bolt with a spring for C13. Put it in the flywheel hsg and when the bolt hole lines up, snaps in.
Sick tool box Josh. Thanks for sharing!
Love your idea of double stacking your sockets
Nice new "cart" I hope you got a really sweet deal on it. It will take a little bit to get things how they work best for you. Stay safe and healthy.
Very cool box tour video! You got some great ideas for toolbox organization!
The orange w/black looks pretty damn awesome!
I just recently came across your videos I work for a CAT dealership myself in Florida been there for 22+ years on the heavy equipment side I’ve accumulated quite a bit of tools myself I really enjoyed the video just when you opened your oring box my mouth dropped our contamination control is so strict anyway keep up the great videos thanks for sharing
RP Safety Dept would have field day with those red hooks that have no latches on them lol.
I’ve got that same 68in but it’s matte orange and I love it!!
I've seen a lot of these tool box videos an I have to say this is my favorite
Nice top draw setup, you do a great video . Keep up the great work
Awesome setup 👍👍👍
Did my apprenticeship in Australia in the 70s and a tool allowance was part of the deal. We only had to supply spanners, sockets up to 1 inch in size . Ones employer had to supply all the 3/4 stuff, air tools, tension wrenches ,special tools, lifting gear etc. Hence I could pick up my tool box up on my own and take it home to do whatever. I worked on Massey Ferguson tractors (30 to 120hp) and cane harvesters at the time.
Thanks for sharing people wonder why mechanics charge so much it’s not only the knowledge you are paying for but they have a lot of money invested into the work
Great idea for the sticky numbers in a pill box
Sometimes it's the free things.. Those hose springs are slick!
Nice setup. My old snap on guy offered me a great deal on an epiq a few years back and I didn't really need it, but am still kicking myself a little for not jumping on it
Holy moly, I been wanting on this!
Great color choice!
Great impact wrench!!
I heard angels sing, when you opened the toolbox. Holy smokes. I also use springs for combination open-box end wrenches.
GREAT Video Bro’ 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Watching videos like this makes me thank god I’m an aircraft mechanic, I don’t need nearly this many tools.
Hi sir i from Québec and you teach me a lot with your video I am a diesel mécanicien too but i am only 19 years old and i have a lot to know thank you for your video
I'm heading for the ICON 72" with a hutch.
Good stuff
Super nice !
Nice cart
Love that Snap on box,,but that price good lord they are very proud.😵💫
An epiq 68 inch box just has the ROLL CART! Damn.
Ahhhhh the Destruction of the Week sound effect for a Snap On box...only $50 a week for the next 20 years! Yes, true destruction of the week material there!
Wow. Impressive.
That is a working toolbox! It may be a mess but it works….
Wow, orange and black were my high school colors. I used to work with a technician who had one of the premium snap on tool boxes with butcher block top. Understandably he was very possessive of his box. Once another technician placed a part (part was in a box) on the top of his tool box. He was not a happy camper.
I don’t get people that buy a ultra expensive toolbox and treat it like it’s made of gold and nobody can touch it. My philosophy is any tool I bring to work is going to get used and damaged including the toolbox itself. What’s crazy is how none of these toolboxes have options for a clear covering over the paint like cars have on the front bumper. If I ever get a fancy box it’s getting protected so even if I throw a wrench at it the paint will be just fine.
I wouldn't be happy either if someone were to touch or put something on my property
A true mechanic - has speed drivers. Too many "techs" use powered tools when they need the finesse available from a speeder.
Ahh, Tapatio… a man of taste.

4:56 I have 2 of those height gauges too. Found one under a rocker cover in an engine & bought one. I don’t even work on cats lol , but I have ‘em
15:51 - colored telephone wire works great. Hard to find though. I raided the phone computer scrap bin years ago, and stocked up.
Hey Josh! Love your videos, really helped me land an apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic. Can I ask you do a 'tools for new diesel mechanics‘ specifically what tools are most commonly used and the names of them?
I’m starting my apprenticeship in a few weeks and a increasing my knowledge on tools would be very advantageous!
Thanks so much
organization and everything
I'm the last one in the shop without an Epiq box now. I like the flush front of the Epiq because I tend to drop things and it smacks the top of every drawer on the way down so a lot of my lower drawers have dings in them. Not to mention the stupid plastic slide locks on the Masters suck. But I haven't owed the the truck a penny in a decade, so that probably won't change unless I hit the lotto lol.
I dunno, it doesn't look any more disorganized than my boxes looked when I was still pulling wrenches...It's good to upgrade your boxes now and then, kind of a reward to yourself...
That’s the shape of box I wish I had got. I have the 84” with bed liner top and workcenter. But it has the single wrench long drawer not the two.
Very nice
I thought I was the only wierdo with socks in my toolbox hahahaha
I'm about 10 months into the trades, goin for my first year this May-June I took block instead of day release cause I heard that the sooner you finish the better. Bought my first mac tech series toolbox and man oh man... I wish they had it in orange with black trims.. the green with black trim isn't all that bad tho.
My only comment would be to get better organized and clean out what you don't use or need. Buy some Ernst drawers organizers for loose tools and Plano or Flambeau fishing boxes with movable dividers so you can customize them for all the little parts. I got a new big triple bank a few years ago and decided I wasn't going to let it become messy. Mechanics tend to keep everything and the next thing you have 20 years of stuff you will never use.
I got the roll cart with the impact gun holder I use one as my coffee cup holder lol
I remember my first time seeing an inverted torx bolt, it shook me down to my core. WHY GOD? WHYYYY?
You would hate working on Euro cars, I work on them daily and pretty much every other bolt is inverted torx. Still better than triple squares tho.
Nice 👍
I love how the intros just keep getting quicker and more incomprehensible with each new video. (0:00) 😂
Power Gen tech here with Cat but about to be moving into the engine bay. The epiq box is what I’ve been looking at as well. Can’t decide between the 68 and 84
an Epic crap on adap ape Box !
I bought that same box back in May my snap-on guy gave me a pretty good deal on it half the price that it is online
Avoid the rhino liner top, lots of failures. Then you end up waiting again. The bedliner coating Snap-on uses doesn’t hold up to brake fluid etc. I had mine replaced and went with a plain top
I had a ex coworker that just got a few 2x6 glued together and cleaned them up and took it to get line x, haven’t heard if it held up but I thought it was a good cheaper idea
Well they talked me into the rhino liner one so it doesn't scratch and if there is a problem I'll definitely let them know about it or there might be a video about it lol.
Thank you
Nice box tour . I need one with those deep draws . You like the Milwaukee cordless. I like the crock pot.
I do like the Milwaukee tools, but not their battery prices. Still use air tools on big jobs like main bearings and stuff though, keep oil off the electric impacts and doesn't beat them up as much.
I will take the crock pot over the tools any day. They make you sweat and say bad words.
Inverted Torx head ... Crescent makes a specialized adjustable wrench to round them off.
Bought a harbour freight tool box myself. That way I didn't have to support the SnapOn guy kids thru college. 😆
the cut scream about the snapon torque angle had me dead🤣🤣🤣 ive never trusted it either
Good to see you young diesel mechanics blowing your hard worked for money like I did for 44 years
Omg yes bro 🙌
This draw I should probably light it on fire. Brilliant! In next weeks video. How to put a fire out.
I went from a 72 master to a 84 epiq and I miss the small drawers that I used to hate. I cant stand the mixed drawers. I have them too
snap on cares the large carbide scrapers to ive got a 2 inch i like the box man
Great video thanks! Do you get a tool allowance? Is that pretty standard in the trade to get a tool allowance? This looks expensive
nice box ! lol not what one man says to another but ? i use a MBC elderodo “from tha 70s” an a matco top box - yea i’m old but still playin with trucks
Right "paperwork" yeah ok!😎
Thumbs Up! What brand/model tool do you use to cut open the oil filters?
I want a 2s in that Grey
"I should probably light this drawer on fire." That's gotta be my new box sticker. Like the vid, by the way, what are those boots ya got on?
The cat torque wrench looks just like the snap on that I have.
Snap on makes CATs tooling.
Nice!!$$$$$
Haha. I was wondering what those were on your boots.
Tapatio is the best!!!
Looks like mine. More stuff than tools.
Josh, would it be possible for you to get your hands on a WERA 6004 XXL adjustable wrench? Would love to hear a real mechanics thoughts and a honest review on it 😅
That’s an expensive set up there. It ain’t cheap being a mechanic. Every time a snap on truck comes it’s like a kid in a candy store. 😂😂
Lol darn inverted torques..2015 kenworth t880 drive line u joint bolts and steering box in otherwords they stay shiny
Realiza un video de las herramientas especiales caterpillar por su aplicación por motor
Commenting for the algorithm
Oh man 👍
That is why I ordered my Powerset up in my Cabinet I wasn't a fan of the drawer. You didn't get the alarm system add on I see.
Looking at both boxes, which one is favorite?
Just paperwork and such in there... The glock 19 looking back at you... Am I just a joke?
Where do you keep all your dial gauges, micrometers, etc.
11:25 what is cooking in the crock pot? seized fasteners or lunch? hot sauce is as good as penetrating oil, at least taste wise.
Hot sauce is like Lucas additive for food. A little makes everything better.
how big are the springs u use to hold wrenches ect
How do you like that Milwaukee 3/8 stubby I think it's the best damn tool I ever bought out of all the tools I have I could not live without that so nice not having to Drag a air hoes around to get the job done
OK you have a few more tools than I do, but that's not surprising because you make your living with yours and mine are, well I guess I make a living with mine but mine are to fix apartments. One thing I would like to know is what in the heck do you use a needle scaler for? When I worked for Atlas-Copco we usually sold them to foundries and I think that ships use them a lot to scale rust. Just curious. Keep the good stuff coming.
Don’t know about him a fix cars for a living and there good for knocking rust off cleaning up welds and annoying your co workers cause there loud as hell 😂😂😂
