    I am really happy people have enjoyed the video, it energizes me to make many more videos. StariV8, to answer your question, I also have several varieties of bananas in my yard and they do well, as long as we don't get a freeze. North Florida is too cold to grow tropicals, but central to southern Florida can grow them. In terms of transplanting a full grown tree, I tried that twice and failed both times, so I would think twice, maybe take a cutting first so you have a backup plan...

    Our fig tree in Florida also develops the reddish rust color and drops leaves usually beginning in late July or early August. It seems to begin when the crop is nearing its end. As you do, we just ignore it and allow the leaves to fall. It always comes back strong in the spring. Good video, thank ypu.

      Yep, that rust happens to mine every year, same cycle you described. I just consider it my fall colors (which I suppose are brown with black spots, hehe). Great news! I just added 3 new varieties of figs to the yard over the last couple weeks. One variety claims to have FIGS, get this, THE SIZE of TENNIS BALLS! I am so stoked to see that, btw, the tree already had the rust on it, still got it, hehe. Hope you sub

    How cool, so many interesting fruit trees from that region of the world, I am glad we are able to grow them in America. I know my Italian relatives always had fig trees in the northeast, buried them in hay the winter so they wouldn't die from the freeze. They were very prized.

    I have a two year old turkey fig and I have it in a huge pot, 100 lbs. I live in Colorado and bring it in the house after cutting it back at the start of winter so it doesn't freeze the roots, I give it 2 cups of water a month and when winter is over I use a dolly to move it back outside, I keep my tree well pruned so it stays kinda small so I don't get too much fruit. It produces about 12-20 figs a year which is perfect. A turkey fig is self pollinating, you don't need two to get fruit, Figs are sweet and high in fiber m m good

    Not sure how I would do that. I got my tree for about 12$ at a local nursery, so not too expensive to buy one that will get you fruit more quickly that a cutting. In fact, I would recommend getting a bigger one to start so you get plenty of fruit really soon.

    I just bought a house with a beautiful brown turkey fig, but the previous owners let it grow too much. It is 15 years old and 20 feet tall. My husband and I would prefer it to be smaller since it takes up the whole back yard. Also this video makes a good point about flies and not being able to get to all the fruit. Question: would cutting the tree in half (to 8 feet as suggested) be harmful? We wouldn't want to lose such a pretty and mature tree.

    • @EatYourBackyard
      @EatYourBackyard  10 років тому

      Marjorie Stevens Good question. I have had good results trimming mine way down to size. I keep one of mine at about 8 feet tall and only allow sideways growth. Makes it possible to pick from it without a ladder. The limbs are very flexible and strong. I would fertilize it after the trimming to help with after trimming growth.

    • @coastalsailor9151
      @coastalsailor9151 9 років тому

      Marjorie Stevens Not sure about the trimming, but when I was a boy my grandparents had an absolutely huge tree in the backyard. Figs were easily harvested because my grandfather attached tin cans to poles and you could simply rise the can up to the fig and once the fig was inside the can, a simple twist and the fig would drop into the can. Lower the can and enjoy. Check with a nursery, but I would worry about heavily trimming a mature tree.

    I recently purchased 2 Fig trees from my local Lowes garden center. One is a Brown Turkey Fig and the other is a Black Mission Fig. I'm planning on growing them in large containers to try and keep there size somewhat in check. I am in SE Florida and was wondering what month do you prune your tree back? I don't want to cut off any potential new Figs. I also was told that Figs in Florida grow a Summer and Fall crop, one crop more abundant than the other. Do you get more than one bloom where you are located from your tree?

    Any recommendation on a good time to prune the suckers and get them potted? I have 3 suckers on my Turkey Brown that also have figs on them. No doubt after I harvest the fruit, but should I wait until spring or as soon as I harvest the fruit? On a side note, this is my first fig tree I got this tree from Gurney's this past spring and it was a 3' stick with a root ball. I planted it in a recyclable shopping bag (aka Walmart grow bag system) and it just took off. I have since planted it in a pot and plan to keep it that way, but also want to grow fig trees in the yard. I live in zone 7A. Thanks!

      That is very coincidental. I was just thinking about that. The best
      time is in the early spring. Not so early that the leaves get burned by
      cold, not so late that the tree starts to sprout.

    • @EatYourBackyard

      My best guess is that they need fertilization. I bury the carcasses of many fish after they have been fileted around mine. They love that and really go off when you "fish" them. That is the method I use for big sucess and TONS of figs. BTW, they are also really susceptible to rust on the leaves from fungus. That happens to mine each year late season and the leaves fall off. It always grows back next year and the branches stay healthy.

    I just got one of these at the local home improvement store. It's tall and leggy, but it was 1/2 price and cost around $10. I'm in North Texas. I was told it would do fine in its container, for a while. I just don't know where or when to plant it. I also got a Meyer Lemon. I'm thinking of keeping them both as container trees. Anybody have any ideas? Feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Question I have a new bought Brown turkey fig tree but the leaves are all turning brown and falling off. I know to wait till around November to transplant it but is there anything I can do to stop the leaves from turning brown?

    • @EatYourBackyard
      @EatYourBackyard  10 років тому +1

      Charles Frazer Yes, that happens to all of mine each summer. The leaves get a blacky spotty thing that happens on the leaves. Then eventually all the leaves fall off and it grows great the next season. I have heard it is a type of fungus, and you can treat it with chemicals. I would rather just let the natural cycle happen, since it doesn't seem to impact the fruit much. The big problem is what to do with all the figs it produces. It rains figs in the early summer.

      They don't get very tall, maybe 15 feet. I recommend a Persian Mulberry for that use. :)

    People in California should take note of the cautions that the California Invasive Plant Council have identified for brown turkey figs. From their brochure, they state: "Edible fig, Ficus carica: Can be a problem in the San Francisco Bay area, the Central Valley, and Southern California. May be spread by birds and deer, as well as by vegetation fragments. Can dominate stream and riverside habitat." Residents close to open space should probably not plant edible figs, esp. if deer are around.

      I don't know, there are a lot better options for fig trees in your area, some of the northern varieties are the best in my opinion, find a nursery that sells a good type and get that sucker in the dirt!
