Dr. Michael Bauer of Colorado Canine Orthopedics discusses canine Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears.
Dogs with ACL tears may exhibit mild to severe lameness with both acute and gradual onset. A dog may not be able to bear any weight on the affected leg or there may be a more subtle lameness, all depending on the current degree of their ACL tear.
Some dogs will have an acute onset of severe symptoms and suddenly will not be able to put weight on the leg, other dogs may experience a slow, worsening lameness.
Almost all dogs, with any degree of ACL tear, sit to the side or with the affected leg out to the side, even when asked to do a good sit for a treat.

Excellent demonstration! Just noticed that with our vet today! I was wondering why theres such a varying degree of movement with this ACL injury! Thank you!

We had a chocolate lab. She was overweight but she was still active. One day she jumped off the couch and landed on her leg to hard. Turns out she had completely torn the acl. They had to do surgery the next day. When she hurt it, she screamed in pain. After wards, she was really careful to use. We took her to the vet and target diagnosed her with the torn ACL.

    Braces? Do they help?

Thanks for the video! I recently got my dog an A-Trac brace from Woundwear instead of doing surgery. The brace is already working so I'm hoping my poor dogs leg will heal soon.

My sweet natured 6 yr old Lab/Pitt/Spaniel mix has all signs of immanent acl tearing. X-ray showed a lot of inflammation. She has been placed on a special diet to lose weight, given an anti-inflammatory & pain medication to be used prn when limping.
    I have a few questions:
    1) why can't the tearing ACL be repaired before it is completely torn?
(What if it never completely tears & my dog lives a miserable painful life? She is only 6 years old)
2)Is the decision do surgery AFTER complete tear 'Vet Specific' or standard practice?
3)Will a leg brace help: -alleviate pain?
-slow or stop the tearing process?
(I was told they do absolutely nothing and ease the owners mind only)

Thanks for the video! I heard that some vets are NOT recommending surgery for a torn ACL because the cost is high and once torn the chance is pretty high of it tearing again. Your thoughts on this?

      So, euthanasia?

    • @jennyrose2200
      @jennyrose2200 2 місяці тому

not at all. There are conservative therapies, prolotherapy, and fitting with a brace is going to help the dog bear weight while keeping the good leg from being damaged by extra weight and use. @@convincedquaker

Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no. My Lab has a torn CCL and sits both ways. Whatever feels best in the moment for them.

I just got my dog an xray for lameness. Now from watching your video, I realize she does not like to sit usually, and will put most of her weight on one side. The xray did not show anything.

Turmeric Curcumin is the best thing for Dogs with joint problems. I have given my dog it for a few years. Without it she cant walk on one leg due to knee problems. It takes 4 to 8 weeks to start working. I give her 1 pill a day of Turmeric Curcumin with BioPerine and Ginger for Anti-inflammatory. It has to be 95% Curcuminoids, very important. The best one is Dr. Matthew's. It's $20 for a 2 month supply. Just 1 pill a day not 2.

Our dog is too old for surgery. She puts no weight on her leg when walking. It's getting bigger and there is dark red on the inside of her leg that seems to be covering a good part of the inside of her leg. Trying to keep her comfortable. Please advise.

Dummie you're dog is in major pain get it a brace and pain meds don't justify not helping dog cus of no yelping!! Dogs are great masters at pain!!

Not always, if it is bad enough, yes then probably. My dog completely tore it and she screamed when she did it. Afterwards she only whimpered occasionally. I would first check the dogs pads of the feet to make sure there’s nothing there. I’m not and expert. I am just speaking from experience. If your dog starts getting worse, take it to the vet by all means. No one knows your dog better than you. If there is a problem, your dog will tell you. Just pay attention and be careful

Pretty harsh. If they are anything like people a few weeks after the tear it may not hurt at all for day to day living and light excercise

I have a pitbull, and for some reason her front left leg is limping now.. She walks like she has no control over it. Like she throws it forwards and up and when she pulls she throws it back too far and it really is making me feel bad because the doctor said shes fine but she cant even go on walks but will walk perfectly fine on grass

My dog had tplo surgury 8 weeks ago. She yelped at around 5 weeks into recovery. After going in for the last x ray it turned out that her plate cracked? What should I do? The surgeon said it is fine but I can't find anything saying that it is. It is now been 4 months and her front left leg is now limping and she can hardly walk now. She had already her back right leg fixed Ideas?

i think my dog just tore his acl. my fucking dumb ass mother let the dog out in my backyard which is a 3stair high deck that goes into concrete. my dog loves to run as fast as he can and jump off the stairs onto conrete and small pebbles. he got hurt once before by hitting the tree there by jumping off the deck to get a squirrel. i told her never to let him out in the back and when he needs to go out ill walk him but off course she doesnt listen, his left hock is swollen and very hot to the touch. he limps with 3 legs. im almost certain that means its a torn acl. hes only 4 years old. im so fucking mad at my mother right now .

You have to exercise your dog or he'll go crazy and get hurt when he barrels out. Your responsibility.

likely this is an auto immune response to a poor diet. these tears are becoming more and more common.
