Was always curious about this unit. Great presentation David!
Many thanks Curt :)
Thanks for that David, seems like a very cool bit of kit. I recently bought a set of professional calibrated large scale hydrometers, which incidentally were about 1/3 of the price of the Easy Dens, so personally do not feel I could justify but may have seriously considered the Easy Dens prior to this.
Cheers Tim. Naturally this has further functionality but it really depends on what you feel you would like.
Great Video. While it is not cheap, it is a very nice product. I like the small sample size required for measument. This is something that will go on my wish list. I appreciate the product reviews you do on your channel. While not all will want to put out the money for this, many of us would never have known, or even considered this as an option untill hearing about it on your channel. Keep up the good work!
Many thanks Nick. I aim to be selective on products, I certainly do not want them to be the main focus.
No doubt, aimed for the next generation of serious home brewers out there. Right on the manufacturer for releasing a top quality product.
Yes, totally. This is for the serious homebrewer with a budget to match. Plenty out there though.
Very well explained and presented as always. This looks very useful and tempting. I much prefer the look of the new version, the old version looked cheap but was not!!!!
Great to hear Alan, thank you. Yes I think this looks more the part as well as having some speed upgrades.
So I bought the device on Monday because of this review and it arrived today. Awesome shipping speed from Austria to Switzerland. Since we are not in the EU, this can take forever but not this time. It actually arrived one day early (free shipping with DHL). The EasyDens feels really sturdy and I can't find any obvious flaws in the haptic design. I love professional gear and I'm happy that this device is affordable. You might be turned off by the price but this is no toy (thanks for the 10% off btw!). I tested it with a spirit I had on hand and it told me that the ABV is 1% lower than stated on the bottle. I actually believe the EasyDens since it is a cheap vodka I use for mixing. The other thing I tried was destilled water. 1.000 as expected. Normally I use a Tilt v2 but now I can check the wort during mashing and before the boil without waisting a lot of my beer. Awesome! I'll learn a lot from these new values and can't wait to try it out! Thanks for the review!
Great to hear. Yes Anton Paar are a great manufacturer and really the accuracy offered here is great value for the money. Just look at the price of the higher end instruments they sell to breweries. I hope that it continues to impress you as mine has done.
Very expensive, but a great looking product. Nice to see the big boys are making such technology available to the home-brewer. Thank you once again for a informative review. Perhaps you could do a video on the many different tools for measuring sg with there pros and cons.
This sort of accuracy is never going to be cheap and this is a small amount compared to the cost of commercial versions. I will be looking at some further content in regards to measuring devices for sure.
Excellent presentation. This isn't something I'd go for, but you never know what the future holds. At least now, I know what this is; I'd recently heard a pro brewer talking about this device. At this point I'll stick with a Tilt. I love the integration into Brewfather
Cheers Jim
Very interesting thank you :)
Cheers Paul :)
Awesome video David I really do love the new version even when compared to the old version. Having said that my long term testing hasn’t been all positive.
Thanks Bradley. I think this new version is a more attractive option
Yes definitely no reason to buy the old one. Probably not enough of a reason to upgrade if you have the old one.
Yes, sounds about right to me :)
Really nice method with the syringe !
Yes, very easy and you dont need a large sample
For this level of accuracy and quality i think that it has a fair price. Also 10% discound and free shipping is a noticeable offer. Here in Greece a well made tool with 0.01 accuracy costs 240 euros
Great to hear Nikos. Yes I think so too.
Great informative video as usual. Looks like a great piece of kit. Not sure I could justify the price tag to my wife though!!! That kind of money would buy me other, perhaps far more justifiable upgrades like a larger boiler/fermenter etc. This is a few years down the line for me I think.
Thats Rory. Yes, this isnt going to be for everyone :)
This is probably more suited for a microbrewery rather than a homebrewer. The amount of faff required just for one measurement where you have to pass through a coffee filter the sample, most likely even if dry hopped, and then cleaning that must be done with distilled water, is truly not worth it at the homebrew scale.
Personally I think that the combination of refractometer during the brewing day, and then hydrometer during fermentation is unbeatable for cost and ease of use, with the additional bonus that the hydrometer sample is the first time you can actually taste the progress of the beer. The precision required is more than suitable.
I guess everyone will have their own opinion. There are plenty of homebrewers already owning the first version and this one already.
Liked it a lot 👍
Many thanks Allan.
I too have been enjoying using mine for a few months now. So much less faff in the brew day. Only little criticism is the charging for an app subscription for the batch storage after so many. Seems a little grabby after spending so much on the unit.
Yes, agreed Dave. At least its optional.
CONTENT SPREE!!!!
Every week as always :)
Hi David thanks for the great video. After cleaning should I push air through with the syringe to remove the remaining distilled water? it doesn't come out by turning upside down. Thank you
Thanks Mike 🍻Yes. I push the water out in this way.
Great video. I just got mine. Are these the settings you would recommend in the app for homebrew?
Measurement Mode: Quick
Measurement Unit: SG 20/20
Alcohol Calculation: Standard
Enable Unit Changer: On
Thank you. Yes, exactly these.
looks like a great product for the commercial or micro brewer, not sure many home brewers will be taking up the offer ? good of you to bring it to us and with a discount though :)
This was designed for homebrewers who are looking for accuracy. Naturally that comes at price though and will not suit everyones budget or needs.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew would certainly work for those occassions when you forget to take the first reading...........just me ?
I am sure we have all done that at one point or more :)
Looks awesome, very intruiging ... A shame thow that I am forced to use a smartphone to be able to get the data ... Was there really no way to communicate a 2-4 digit number?? like a 7-segment display soldered to the PCB viewable thru the glass? Or will I chuck a fully functional device into the trash in 10 years - If I dont have an App with this BlueTooth standard in the future?
Thanks Robert. There is so much more that can be done via a mobile connection.
Hello!! Just the other day, I was about to pull the trigger on the Anton Paar EasyDens.
Then I looked at the app in the iOS App Store and from what I could tell, you HAVE to pay either monthly or annually a fee to use the app? Is this the case?
I just got mad. I don't mind dropping some $$ on a good instrument, but I refuse to rent the software to run it....
I can't at this time, find anything out there that refutes you have to pay for the software app to run this unit...can you help me out and let me know if there is any way to use the app for free or something else to run the EasyDens?
Thank you in advance,
CC
Here are the details on this:-
Brew Meister for EasyDens
Free: basic features and all measurement units unlocked
Free for 1 year: additionally all premium features.
Personally I have not paid anything.
If i create batch, does it calculate alcohol level and attenuation in my beer?
Yes but you will need to take the measurements and use the app.
Hey David, just got one myself.
I wanted to know if it's ok to use demineralized water instead of distilled water? Just want to do the first calibration check and also wanted to know for the future cleaning of the device. Wouldn't want to hurt this expensive beast 😅
Very sorry for the late comment for some reason UA-cam hid this from me. I would think so, might be best to check that with Anton Paar.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks 😊, yaa i checked with them and they said i should use distilled water, and they didn't really expand on that, so that's what I'll do 😅
David, I have a question that's perhaps somewhat less related to this video itself. I am looking at starting a nano-brewery after all these years of home brewing. If you where in my shoes and if you are in search of a 140-160L a batch system for a reasonable price. What would you choose? Would you consider a B150? or a BT140+ (from danisbrewtower)? Can we get in contact somehow?
Hi, I would certainly look strongly in the direction of the Brewtools 150. Its actually great value and a small footprint compared to other system volume systems.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Are there any shortcoming you would adress on the BT150? And if you compare it to the danishtower (in same budget range)? Seems capable? Or do you see possible flaws/shortcomings?
I am not very familiar with the Danishtower. I see that they have discountinued their smaller 80L systems, so I guess they did not sell well or had issues. Also I have not used a BT150, just the 40 and 80. Both of these I really love. I think they are at the top of the brewing market for good reason.
Naturally the 150 has the same heating as the 80, So that will be quite a loss in heating power.
When you change the batteries do you have to recalibrate
No, this is not needed.
When using with fermented beer I think you still need to convert SG to compensate for alcohol like you do with a refractometer?
No, this takes accurate gravity readings with or without alcohol present.
And how about distilled alcohol like liquer (with sugar) ???
Yes, it is happy there too
I just bought this based on your review. What’s the specific gravity 20/20 meaning? I took a cold sample and it measured 1.017 on specific gravity setting but when switched to specific gravity 20/20 it was 1.014. What’s the difference? Also do you ever run PBW through this or just distilled water? And do you just leave the water in there or flip it upside down to let it drain out?
In the video, the picture from the app, it says that 20/20 is temperature corrected, whist the SG isn't. E.g, water has it highest density at 4 degrees C, hence the gravity always needs to be temperature corrected. Just like a hydrometer reading needs to be performed in 20 deg C.
@@treskefy so you should always keep it at sg 20/20 so it can temp correct and get an accurate reading? So between my readings of 1.017 SG at 2C and 1.014 SG 20/20 at 2C, the 1.014 is the correct reading?
Yes, Specific Gravity 20/20 is temperature-compensated. I suggest using this at all times.
I can appreciate a product like this. The price would make me wince at least a little bit. But I already bought a digital refractometer and I have a tilt - so I am no stranger to fancy equipment.
The thing that really makes a problem for me is the effort required. I am investing in grain father fermenters for their convenience - but they do not have a sample valve.
Thanks for your thoughts. The grainfather conical has a bottom tap that is designed to give samples and transfer from.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew it is a good point I just had to use it tonight. I am not a fan at how low to the ground it is. I am planning to build a table to a convenient height to make it easier to take samples.
It is almost as annoying as the robobrew having the controls at the bottom.
I stand mine on a chair or on top of the glycol chiller. This allows easy reach to the bottom tap and transfers. I have the pressure transfer kit but seldom use it due to this gravity based standing.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew do you have any concerns over oxygen exposure?
No. As long as you do not splash the beer then all will be fine. Its easy stuff. Just make sure that your hosing reaches the bottom of the keg comfortably. You could go for the pressure transfer kit if this concerns you but you still need to control the flow and avoid splashing.
Yeah, way too expensive. I don't need what it provides so it's not for me.
By the way, can it measure gravity after fermentation also? If so, with the memory function will it calculate ABV? Or is the ABV measurement only for spirits?
it can and it does.
Yes all round though the instant ABV measurement is just for higher alcohol amounts. Accuracy like this is not desired by all but it will come at a price. Frankly this is a small amount compared to commercial versions.
Thanks for the review! Will there be an import tax for the US? Everyone complaining about the price obviously doesn’t brew enough. I brew all the time and tend to somehow break a hydrometer every other brew. Gone through 10 of them easily. At $8-12 - piece that adds up. Also you won’t be wasting as much beer using this. Instead of taking a 150-250mL sample adds up also. You are saving .5-1L per brew. So you can calculate that in as well (with less grain and water) and it pays for itself overtime. If you’re still doing extract or brew a couple times a year I can see that this would not be worth it. Thanks David!
Thanks Max. I suspect that there could be. Those that live in the EU will not be taxed. Yes, these have a lot going for them for sure.
Interesting but. Thing is, why would you need such high accuracy. At the moment an Hydrometer witl give 0.001 accuracy (displayed) or 4 significant figures. Another Sig Figure is interesting but not particularly useful.
A Refractometer can be difficult to read with any degree of confidence and a Digital Version would be useful. ABV measured rather than calculated from SG and FG would be nice I suppose.
I liked the negative pressure way of de-gassing. All I need now is a 250mm Shringe :-) for my Hydrometer Sample Tube thingy.
I don’t think this product is about need for homebrewers. Regular Hydrometer accuracy is quite a variable but for most of us its enough. Yes, the degassing methods are useful .
Worth mentioning for UK brewers that since some silly buggers decided to cripple our country by leaving the EU - they do not ship from their UK presence.
I've just bought one, and then had the added joy of getting a DHL invoice for an additional £74
Yes, its the same here in Norway.
Cute!
I'm guessin', that you're SOL, if ya' don't use a smart device?
Yes, you need a smart device for the readings.
love it, my wife would kill me!
Haha, I got a stern look from mine :p
Yes this is way to expensive. Yes it is what I am going to get myself for Christmas this year.
Ok tilt and tilt like also way to expensive and if you are like me and would need the pro model or a BT repeater to use a tilt (SS fermenter inside a winecooler temp chamber, the blue tooth wont get through I have tested with a low power device already) its only about $80 more for the easy dens. Also the tilts are way out of my risk comfort zone. Lipo inside plastic container inside acidic beer seems like a recipe for bad to me... With the dens the only contact with wort/beer is a the tip of a syringe that can be easily sanitised, you destroy the sample after, and its not enough to worry about losing. Other then the price making it a "well Christmas is coming up type purchase" I really cannot see the downside. Also knowing a bit about Anton Paar I can forgive the price, knowing the quality and support that will be behind it.
For the filtering step I think a bag of inline syringe filters off amazon would greatly speed/simplify things, just draw through the filter, pop it off and then inject into the easy dens once cooled.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
UK buyers beware. I took advantage of this and bought a unit - the BAD NEWS is the import taxes in to the UK add another 70 quid - i wont be buying anything from Europe again
Yes, this is the same for all countries outside of the EU. It's the same here in Norway.
Really not necessary on a home brew scale.
Certainly this is not necessary.
To have to pay a yearly subscription for the app to fully use the product you just bought and paid a pretty penny for is just down right morally corrupt. Thus company need to have a good hard look at itself.
Even tho I can afford one certainly will not be purchasing one anytime soon simply for this fact.
Dusgusting
I do not pay a yearly sub personally.
You've posted this same, exact, word for word claim on just about every review of the EasyDens. If what you claimed was true, fair enough. Trouble is, you're completely wrong and spreading misinformation. Like that word, "misinformation"? I don't, yet you're doing just that, misinforming people.
Are you a competitor of Anton Paar? Sure seems like it.
Plenty of people out there will strong opinions that are either wrong or right 🍻🍻
