Nicely done Brian, I have been looking forward to your take on this and it did not disappoint :)
Thanks David! 👍🍻
This was excellent (as always). Picked one up a few weeks ago after watching your review, and it really is everything I hoped. Fast, accurate, super stingy with wort, and a breeze to use and clean. Now I can rely on the Tilts for what they do best (temperature and tracking fermentation activity) and use the EasyDens for accurate OG, FG, and as many points in between as I want. For folks who really want to know the actual gravity numbers and have accurate ABV and brewhouse efficiency numbers, I think it's worth every penny. Cheers!
Glad you are enjoying it! I really like mine! 👍🍻
Great video as usual. I just got one for my birthday. Can’t wait for next brew day.
Thank you so much sir! I have been contemplating one of these as I am starting my own small Mead business in the UK and was looking at progressing from tradition hydrometer to one of these and your video has sold it to me. Such an indepth video and all of my questions about this product have been answered by you more than the company that makes it them self! I hope they are aware of your hard work reviewing their product 😁
Thanks!
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers One last question though, with the ABV reading is there a minimum it has to be for this feature to work? I noticed that easydens video states you need sg and fg for abv to be calculated? surely that defeats the point of this unit if you need them before abv is calculated. I want to test final abv of my high abv mead and low abv session meads as a double check without the other readings having to be present?
You can manually add the starting gravities of the liquid so it will calculate everything if you did not capture an initial reading.👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Awesome thank you
Thanks for the review Brian. I put this item on my "want" list almost a year ago. I am a habitual sampler when it comes to brewing so I eat into my volume of every batch. After watching your review, that has definitely sealed the deal for me. Will probably pick one up in December or January as I've made all the other upgrades I want to make right now. Cheers!
It is so easy to take samples...it's almost addictive..lol 👍🍻
Amazing little gadget you won’t regret the purchase
Interesting. It does indeed look like a cracking piece of kit, it's massively out of my price range. Not saying it's too expensive, but for my brewing needs- hard to justify. Even if I made (cough) essential oils. Great review.
Lol thanks! 👍🍻
Your set looks very nice now.
The product seams to be very nice.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks David! 👍🍻
Great review. It will be going on my wish list for purchase later on down the road.
It's definitely a great device! 👍🍻
Very cool. I wonder what is the underlying method used for the measurement; e.g. refraction of light (refractometer style), density displacement (hydrometer style), or other.
Never mind. I found it. It uses the oscillating u tube technique. I may want to get one now.
@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY yeah I was going to say that. It is a pretty cool device I'll say that for sure.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I just watched their video on how to degas a sample very quickly and easily using the syringe. Awesome. They have a 15% discount right now too. That’s $52 bucks off.
@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY yes sir such a deal!! I actually just did the same degassing technique on a beer I was pressure fermenting and it worked great.
@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY I think that 15% off ends today by the way..
I have one! It's amazing. The amount of beer saved is wonderful in itself!
Yes!! 👍🍻
What did you do before you had an EasyDens? Throw the beer away because the measurement was off?
@@SammaxMunich give it a sip, analyze the color, give it another sip, and then "water" my alcoholic trees.
Thanks for the review sir!! The Easydens is definitely a "nice to have" tool because up here in Canada it's expensive ($500 + applicable taxes CAD) so I'm curious if there are many (or any) users from a homebrew perspective. I could totally see this being used in a commercial nano brewery. I guess each Homebrewer's going to have to weigh the pros/cons of the Easydens vs standard methods (hydrometer / refractometer) and choose what's right for them.
Yeah I completely understand it's expensive and cost prohibitive in a lot of situations. I do agree completely with you on the nano Brewery side. I know there are quite a few home Brewers that do have the device though. I do like the fact that it has a lot of uses outside of just specific gravity though if you're into that sort of hobby. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Yep! If someone has other uses for it then for sure. I do like the very minimal sample size and the fact that it can be used both pre and post fermentation without any fuss (unlike calibrating your refractometer).
@@davechang-sang4366 yup! 👍🍻
I see the Oktober BenchMK in the back, any chance we get the review before the presale ends?
Yes sir! Coming shortly! 👍🍻
I have an older one, seems to work great but my refractometer sometimes gives different results. I dint know which to believe at times…
Sometimes I even pull out the ol’ glass hydrometer and get a third reading and then wonder, “is this one the correct reading?” 🤔
i LOVE this thing. You cant beat the minimal sample size and easy cleaning. Also removes all user error in taking measurements for the most part. BUT....... now I see this SMART REF thing..... whats that all about? Do you need that to get the actual ABV? I thought the easy dens gave you an ABV? I guess the easydens is only a predicted ABV?
It is a great device!
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Yeah the price is steep but not once after my 1st use experienced buyer remorse. Worth every penny.
This would be very helpful in the development of one of the applications for our Control System
👍🍻
I would love one of these, but really need to hold off till either the price comes down or they have a sale.
I hear ya..
Just got mine a few weeks ago and used it during my last brew day. Love being able to take small samples. Wish it had a high temperature rating. I like your work around of keeping some ice to do a quick cool.
Yeah the sample is so small it takes no time to cool it down. 👍🍻
I have some stainless ramekins of various sizes I use for measuring out salts and hops. I've been getting a small sample in one of those and setting it in bowl of cold tap water. Its in range from mash temps within a minute or so, especially if I move it around a little.
@@matthewmeiser2298 yup works great! 👍🍻
Just curious what can sealing machine you have in the background? Don't think I've ever seen a drill powered one. Are those more cost effective? Work good?
Justin that is the Oktober benchMK it is brand new they just announced it. As far as cost-effective it's probably one of the lowest cost on the market they're currently running an introductory special right now of $449. I'll be dropping a video shortly on it.
Initially I loved this device. During brewing it accidentally dropped off the table and bounced off my foot. The measurement tube broke. Took it apart and it looks unrepairable. Total drop was around 24”. Only difference between this and the manual one is around 300$ when this one breaks. This device is way too sensitive for my brewing kit.
Oh wow.
Just bought one because I should not be trusted with my Amazon account after drinking. No regrets though. Merry Christmas!
Lol!;
Someday on the EasyDens for me… but not soon. I think it would be awesome if the app integrated with Brewfather batch tracking tho. And I can’t wait to see the Oktober Benchmrk in action… info on the Oktober site is sparse. Good stuff!
Thanks man!! 👍🍻
Great instrument to measure gravity. I like the small sample size and auto temperature correct.
Does this device actually measure the temperature or do you need to measure it yourself before the test and input the value?
Cheers
It does measure temperature. I think it shows under the specific gravity measurement.
Great review for the the EasyDens. The only thing I can say is it's a little to expensive, just my opinion. Maybe one day I'll be able to make that jump to buy one. Cheers!
Yeah they aren't cheap that's for sure! 👍🍻
Dude!! I see the Oktoberfest drill driven canner back there…how is it? Great video btw 😂
Haha coming soon!! 👍🍻
Run the tilt during ferment and also use this guy. The tilts are great to see when things are done (calibration process is too complicated). I wish it could figure out abv at a given point on the wort / beer but otherwise love it. That said. Digital refractometer has always been my favorite. I broke mine and replaced with this and I still like refractometer better.
You broke the EasyDens abd replaced it with a tilt?
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers no I broke one of the digital refractometers. I think I got it wet one too many times. Replaced with this guy. Liked the refractometer better.
@@jymferrier oh ok.. I misunderstood.. 👍🍻
It's on my wishlist!
I hear ya!! 👍🍻
Nice video. This is something I'd love to have. Guess I'll wait for the off brand to come out. Lol.
Yeah I doubt there will be a generic.
Can you use it on liqueurs?
Like alcohol with sugar and flavors and stuff, or will it throw off the readings?
I'm not 100% sure on that. You might reach out to the company. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers thank you very kindly 😊
Just too expensive for me right now!
I'd be curious if you could compare it to a cheaper off the shelf model like the Milwaukee MA871.
It's less than half the price at $150 on Amazon, but I haven't seen anyone talking about it!
I may have to investigate those I've seen those as well. Might be a good thing to compare. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers $150 would almost be an impulse buy from me! I don't need the app and all the extra crap.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers ohhhhhh I misunderstood. The Easy Dens is ACTUALLY measuring density, it's not a digital refractometer. That could make it superior for sure, but still expensive!
@@JoeCole1 yeah that is true I forgot those are not the same instrument
Very nice video... Like every time ;)
Thanks!!👍🍻
Got to be the coolest piece of tech for reading gravity, just a little to much for me price wise.
👍🍻
Looks nice except the price.
Your awesome with education for a newbee, but you sell who supports your channel
I appreciate that!
If you're looking for an alternative here you go. Just send me a six pack of your brew and I'll drink it. Then I'll tell you how much alcohol is in it. 🤣
400$ for a tool I can only use with a smartphone, that essential ly measures density and temperature but lacking an small display? A prime example of planned obsolescence... You just need to wait until the app is no longer supported or you are forced to buy an upgrade. Don't support those companies!
I appreciate your passion! 👍🍻
To have to pay a yearly subscription for the app to fully use the product you just bought and paid a pretty penny for is just down right morally corrupt. Thus company need to have a good hard look at itself.
Even tho I can afford one certainly will not be purchasing one anytime soon simply for this fact.
Dusgusting
Pay? I didn't have to pay for the app.
