Just listen to the music, don't keep trying to compare it to the way they "used to be". They are trying out a new sound, and it is actually pretty refreshing if you give it an open mind.

I'm very glad they're trying a new sound. As great as they were you can only have so many songs with the exact same guitar effect before it gets stale.
My only issue with this song is that it's not as unique as their other stuff, like this sounds like the kinda stuff I've been hearing on the radio for 15 years, but I really have to listen to the full album. This is still a good song, though.

Ok, this reminds me of when they dropped "Good advice". At first i thought what a horrible change, i hated that song.
Then i listened to the whole "Chinese Fountain" album and was delighted. Fucking Growlers are always into new things, lets hear the full album before dropping any hate.
These guys are amazing and we cant expect them to sound the same as the HUNG AT HEART days.

people complaining that is not the same growlers or different are such casual fans, bands change over time, just take a look at growlers are you in or out album and there last years gay thoughts the sound and style changes

    • @m0bels
      @m0bels 8 років тому +2

gay thoughts ep is a collection of songs from before they had a label, those songs were made before in or out.

    • @JoseSLC
      @JoseSLC 8 років тому +3

m0bels all im saying people need to give there new album a chance i like it, just like many fans do, theres bearly two songs that thry have come out with so far there more to come, if your going to complain and say there not the same growlers, that there old suff was better your not really supporting the band and helping them grow, give it a chance

    • @plumnation
      @plumnation 8 років тому +13

This is not a "change". This is a project with Julian from the Strokes. It's a departure, an experiment. It will change the band, yeah, but it's not like they are going to make City Club from now on.

If you're not bobbing your head to flow the vocals, tapping your feet to groove of that bass line, swaying to that rhythm, then you have never been a true Growlers fan and don't even deserve to appreciate this badassery. This sounds like the Growlers I've always loved.

Look, yeah it sounds different and they had a pop artist produce it. The essence of the band, though, is still there. It might take a few listens. Tbh I didn't really care for their earlier sound when I first heard it, but now I swear its some of the best I've ever heard. Put yourselves in their shoes, if you only lived for your art, wouldn't you want to see it to it's full potential?

Julian casablancas produced and worked with the growlers on this album so it makes sense his influence is there. If you like what casablancas has done in the past this album will be a lot easier to get into. that said it's a lot more 80s influenced and poppy which isnt for everyone. Bands change and you can always listen to their old music if they go in a direction you don't like.

    Yes, I'm only a man
    Judgements of something ancient
    Clocking my time as finished
    The same is all replacements
    Ignorance is complacency
    Why are you purposely fading?
No stand, no sit, no stopping
    Ripping through the neon prophecies
Got let off by a ticket stub
    My time is fading fast
Through your mouth and out yours'
    Say what?
(Shine till the sun comes up)
    Come down
(You oughta wash your hands and pray)
    For what?
    (Shaking hands, swapping dirty blood)
    Pass it round
(You never do what you say)
    Say what?
(Shine till the sun comes up)
    For now
(You promise that you'll come around?)
    I'll be around
So I fear, but I don't know what it is
    So I want, but I pretend I don't need
So here's the pain of the stubbled lover's kiss
I throw my pages all away like shaking wrists
    So shake me down
Shake me up (shake me down, shake me down)
    So shake me down
Shake me up (shake me down, shake me down)
    So shake me up
    Say what?
(Shine till the sun comes up)
    Hey now
(You oughta wash your hands and pray)
    For what?
    (Shaking hands, swapping dirty blood)
    Pass it round
    Say what?
(Shine till the sun comes up)
    Come down
(You promise that you'll come around?)
    I'll be around
I tell me it ain't hard
As I hold my breath thinking why
Tell me to my beating heart
    That I know for sure
Better than I can know for sure
    What it did
My mistakes bend like payphone metal
I never know just what will come
As our [?] hands bind together
    River and me children
    Longer than a trillion
Get what I am given, forever
    (So shake me up)
    Say what?
(Shine till the sun comes up)
    Come down
(You oughta wash your hands and pray)
    For what?
    (Shaking hands, swapping dirty blood)
    Pass it round
(You never do what you say)
    Say what?
(Shine till the sun comes up)
    For now
(You promise that you'll come around?)

I like it. Bands change, it happens. I know it sucks when a good band changes and you don't like them, but I always have to remember that they're just trying to test out new sounds and their old stuff will always be available. I'm glad they tried out a new sound to be honest, many of their songs sound the same. On another note the "shake me up, shake me down" part sounds extremely familiar.

A lot of people are hating on the new sound, but it's not like they haven't changed before. Are you in or out and Hot Tropics were similar but very different from both Hung at Heart and Gilded Pleasures, which were also similar to each other. Chinese Fountain was pretty different from all past releases, and this one looks to be pretty different as well. I like it, and i have come to expect a different sound from them with each album. As long as Brooks and Matt Taylor are in the band I'm not worried about any changes in quality.

    • @Paugose
      @Paugose 8 років тому

I only heard a few Hung at Heart songs and Monotonia, it still recognisable despite the differences, I do believe this album is really different from the others I heard and that's the reason why people are reacting badly, but I didn't listen to all of their stuff, so I'm maybe wrong.

I'm sure they're doing this because Julian lets them do whatever the fuck they want.

why would they have signed to his label? there's a difference between controlling and collaborating, i'm sure they would take anything a producer with a track record like his on board.

actually, in a recent interview, Brooks noted that Julian had more control over the songs produced than compared to their previous albums they produced under other record labels. People are annoyed with these guys because their sound has changed as a result of getting rid of a major player who produced a significant amount of the songs/albums --> Scott, the drummer, was also a producer of the albums. Would have liked to see what their new album would have sounded like if it wasn't so heavily influenced by a member of the Strokes
