SoCal garage rockers The Growlers are known for their incredible live shows. They have a dedicated following and are behind the annual Beach Goth fest, which takes place this weekend.

If you want to hear their "old sound", they have 5 albums before City Club to make that possible. Go listen to those instead of complaining. Let the band evolve their music.

I hear you man! But, people are complaining (although no band owes any fan anything) because their sound changed as a result of changing producers (getting rid of their drummer/producer) and allowing Julian Casablancas to take a significant level of control and artistic freedom over their new stuff. Their sound went to something more Julian Casablanc-ian, rather than something Growler-ish. However, here, in this vid., they seem to show us that they are perfectly capable of preserving that 'beach-goth' sound they created so long ago. In their future works, I hope they regain their artistic freedom and show us what they can really do when they have the money and the studio tenure to make some next-level beach-goth album. :P

They sound amazing and I wish people would stop blaming Julian for their sound change. The growlers chose to have Julian involved. This is how they wanted to sound. It's only natural to change over time.

yeah nah i agree, its their 'hung at heart' and 'are you in or out' albums that ppl fell in love with but they deadset havnt released a bad album, every album has been enjoyable in its own way. its been fun watching them evolve anyway

Man, you people why are you so 'not open' to new sounds or different styles? They dont have to stick on one existince because of that you are against to it. I'm listening this band for a long time and yes this thing they do now is completely a different thing and i support them. There is a beautiful thing, a beautiful album named 'hung at heart' and the other albums they made and became so perfect. But it doesnt has to be in the same way all the time and seems like they didnt want to... Stop blaming julian. They can be friend with anybody they want and they can be in any records they want. Stop behaving like brooks and the all band is forced to be in the cult records or they didnt really want to be in this project. Guys wtf?

Yeah cause they changed for fame and left their whole true fan base behind, and kicked out Scott and lost stonio in not gonna lie there's a few good songs on city club and I haven't been a fan for long but their old albums were better and were made for the fans instead of money

They sound good live, but I think the only detail (obstacle) is the album style. "City Club" is an album where the drum lines, synths, percussion, etc. are strong and amplified, and live the sound becomes weak. It's a good album don't get me wrong, but as I said, I think the sound is weak when they play any "City Club" song live.

They also don't have their drummer Scott here(kicked out) or bassist Stonio(hiatus?) so the live sound is lacking alot of what made the growlers so good for me.
coatzel21 I think Scott was a good drummer but only in his style (that country and rocker old Growlers), City Club wasn't an album for him. So I understand in fact why he got kicked out. I feel sorry for the band too, because they lost a good member.
I can understand that in terms of style but I definitely sense a void in the band just seeing them play. Oh well whatever they keep doing I'll keep listening. I read an article that Scott is establishing a non-profit called Studio's for Schools getting professional audio video equipement in schools that don't have the resources which is super cool.

I'm a brazilian fan, I hear the growlers since 2011, people have to understand that the band changes, the members have changed, the sound changes but the essence remains, I'm sure for this... The Growlers rocks!
This is beautiful. They make sounding that good look way easier it is. Only complaint is that one of the backup vocalists sounds pretty dreadful.

I really hope city club is just an "experimental" album and this doesn't become their new sound for good. Don't get me wrong, it's great they're trying new things, I just don't like this album in the slightest, especially compared to Chinese Fountain and Hung at Heart.

CRIME WAVE Stonio's band played beach goth, but he didn't play with the Growlers that night. So I'm really doubting if he's still with them.
And It's not bs, i talked to Brooks' cousin after beach goth and that's what she told me.
Travis Garman stonio confirmed on a post on Instagram that he was still in the growlers and i heard that Scott left the band himself cause he didn't like the band's new sound.... Idk man.

I’m a fan of their both styles. I got introduced with City Club but have gone back to listen to their start and something about it really resonates with me and I love it. Yes they probably won’t go back to their old sound but I still appreciate their change

City Club is actually a great record on its own, and they're still one of the most interesting bands out there - this performance, no matter how clean and harmless it is, doesn't do justice to them or their new material

this song is freakin' awesome. I think we'll remember this kind of sound in the future, in the same way people who used to listen to led zeppelin (or whatever) felt it in that time. It's grooveeeeeeeeeee and good
just come across this group. first song i heard on tv. got my attention, loving this style. Although his background singers let him down alot
it's definitely a different sound with new influences. At the end of the Album you still end with a smile and repeating songs. I wish they kept Perry and other guitarist.

Recently became a Growlers fan. Love their new music
guys, think about the band for a second. i know if i were in a band i wouldn't want to be writing the same kind of music my entire career. they released an awesome album, sure it's not the same, but if you expect the same thing out of a band each album the band would get pretty boring and the band would be pretty bored. the old growlers didn't go anywhere. if you want to listen to them they have five albums released before this one. and when you want to mix it up come listen to city club, trust me it'll grow on you. ;)

I dig the 'new' sound, the drummer needs to hit the kit a lot harder though. Seems to miss a lot of 'feeling' cause of how soft he's tapping the skins.
