Shmendrick is immortal. His incompetence with the most basic of magics was so profound that his master realized something greater was working its will through him. So his master cursed him with immortality, until he had served his purpose and came at last to being a true magician.

Born in 1981, so yeah this movie was a huge part of my childhood, especially since I've loved unicorns since I can remember, it's how got into Gen 1 MLP to begin with lol. Movie always makes me cry, but it's not the scene people think. The scene that always makes me cry- when the Unicorn is first turned into a human. The pain in her voice breaks me. The voice Actress for her, Mia Farrow, is an amazing job capturing her. The Last Unicorn has my fav depiction of a unicorn. As someone who loves unicorns to this day, I've consumed a LOT of unicorn media and I have 2 pet peeves on how Fantasy settings depict unicorns- they're either 'sacrificial lambs' like in Harry Potter or they're dumb animals that follow around any virgin. This movie depicts unicorns how I like to see them- Wise creatures who are still pure of heart and do struggle when it comes to human emotions. Only 2 other stories I've read give respectful treatment Unicorns- my fav book of all time, Once Upon a Winter's Night and C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle (final book in the Chronicles of Narnia).
Fun fact for you- Ever heard of Studio Ghibli? Well the studio that animated this movie, Topcraft, is a Japanese Studio, and it's members would go on to help find Studio Ghibli (Miyozaki was NOT part of this studio). So you can see the early hits of Ghibli here, especially in the backgrounds.
@2:57- The opening is based on a famous tapestry that's found in a British Museum. So you're close. Also I love this song, it's awesome.
One big misconception about unicorns (at least the European ones), is they're 'horses with horns'. Their bodies are more dear-like though and they're slimmer, hence why they also have cloved horns and hooves. Their heads are more horse shaped and their tales of often depicted like lions. It's also why it's VERY insulting to call a unicorn a horse lol. Also the reason why MOST humans can't see unicorns is because of 2 things- they don't possess magic themselves or they aren't pure of heart.
The writer of this movie also wrote the book. He did try to make a live adaptation of the movie back in the early 2000s but couldn't for some reason. Both Christopher and Angela Lansbury were interested in replaying their roles as King Haggard and Mommy Fortuna. Apparently Lee really enjoyed this role too.
FYI, Angela Lansbury played the role of Mrs. Potts in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
But yeah glad you enjoyed this movie, it's classic for a reason.

Two recommendations for books about Unicorns that I feel do them the way you describe. "The Firebringer Trilogy" by Meredith Ann Pierce is a really good trilogy of books.
Then I can NOT recommend enough. "The Unicorn Chronicles" by Bruce Coville. If you like unicorns written with personalities and emotions like the one in this movie. You might like these books.

@@FaolanCortez Yeah I was going to mention in the comments about how we saw a woman looking at the unicorn outside her cage and only seeing the 'false horn'. I always wondered what might have happened if someone had seen both horns and mentioned it.
The second thing I wanted to say was about that eye patch guy calling the witch 'mommy'. No that's not his mother. Her name is LITERALLY Mommy Fortuna. He's just calling her by her name.

Actually, when Molly screamed at the Unicorn she hasn't seen *any* unicorns before. In many tales, unicorns visit virgins (yes, bodily virgins) as they're attracted to innocent, pure beings. Mollys outrage at never having encountered a unicorn can be interpreted several ways (I have not yet read the book, so this is just my interpretation from the movie footage):
1.) She believed in the tale of unicorns visiting any virgin, but since all unicorns disappeared (or didn't even visit every virgin) there was noone to come to her when she walked in the forests - and suddenly, when she's older, probably not a virgin anymore and with a gang of bandits, there is a unicorn. Irony at its finest.
2.) She might've been either abused/mistreated by someone (you get the implication within the context of 'virgins' and 'non-virgins') and never got to see a unicorn/get visited as she is no longer a virgin. But then suddenly there is one, after all this time.
One or another, it's sad. But it is so realistic. Molly is angry at first, asking the unicorn how she could "dare", but you hear and see the sadness below the anger before it shifts to accepting the situation and treasuring that she was able to see a unicorn once in her lifetime.

    • @kayladunaway7101
      @kayladunaway7101 2 місяці тому +1

There's also the possible interpretation involving "unicorn baiting". A young woman sent out into the woods to attract a unicorn in order to prove her virginity. If one never comes along...

Before this was a movie it was actually a novel.
There is actually not much left out from the book that did not made it into the movie.
There are two scenes in a village which show where Lir really comes from, the first one being about a man telling a prophecy to the group that someone from there village shall bring Haggards' downfall and that there had once been a baby that was abandoned, which of course turns out to be Lir. The second scene being at the end whith the man who told the prophecy turning out to be Lirs' real father who placed him for Haggard to find him in order to make the prophecy come true.
And then there is a scene at the very end where Schmendrick and Molly come across a princess searching for help. They send her to Lir.
I think cutting these scenes for the movie was a rather good decision.
The prophecy would have revealed too much too early on and the ending scene with the princess would have distracted from the more important events.
Anyways, the novel does have a sequel called "Two Hearts".
Unfortunately that one was never turned into a movie.
Nevertheless, it is about a griffin haunting a village and a girl searching for help in getting rid of the griffin.
She comes across Schmendrick and Molly many, many years after the story of The Last Unicorn. They send her to Lir who has become king, but he is an elderly man then who pretty much lives in the past and forgets the present. In other words: He suffers from a case of early dementia.
Nevertheless he helps the girl and pierces on of the griffins' heart, who turns out to have two.
Lir gets gravely injured but at the end of his life the unicorn appears once again and defeats the griffin for good, staying with Lir until he passes away.
The story is good, but it doesn't really have a happy ending, which I think a sequel should have provided.
I think there is even a sequel to that story, but I have never read that one.

I am so glad that there are reactions to this fantastic film coming out now more than ever; I have always loved this film, though I came to it very late, like I did the novel. It is a remarkable fairy tale, at once poignant and funny and also deeply sad, like most stories about unicorns, because they are intrinsically sorrowful beings, set apart because of their otherness. And in a lot of ways, for the small portion of time that she is Amalthea, there are no unicorns in the world. But the plot and the writing is so full of literary references to other myths and legends that give the world of The Last Unicorn such credence and power. Amathlea is the name of the nanny-goat that nursed Zeus when he was hidden on Crete by his mother from Kronos, his father. Lir is meant to be a stand-in for Shakespeare's Lear, before he became King, and the harpy, Celaeno, who is caged in Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival, is one of the harpy sisters from Greek myth. The world is so rich and full of life. I am so glad you loved this movie, as I love it too and the novel as well. I highly recommend the novel and the sequel that was released a few years ago now: The Way Home, two novellas that are set in the world of The Last Unicorn, and has a direct sequel to the story, with Molly and Lir and Schmendrick returning as characters to help the new main character, Sooz, and her village fight a very nasty griffin. Also, the cast of this film is amazing: Angela Lansbury (Mrs Potts, Jessica Fletcher, Miss Price) as Mommy Fortuna and Christopher Lee (Saruman the White, Count Dooku, Dracula, Willy Wonka's dad) as King Haggard. This film has an interstellar cast and I am so glad to see that people are finding it and loving it as many people have throughout their lives. It is always a great film, but so very sad and so very moving and poignant. It is impossible to watch it without dry eyes. Wishing you the best and lots of love from Scotland x

  • @InkyPetrel

Surprised you aren't familiar with the term "curry" in relation to grooming, since you're a horse fan :) A "curry-comb" was traditionally a flat metal brush with short, blunt spikes, (more modern ones are hard rubber but serve the same purpose), it's used on a horse to remove mud and other bits and pieces from the coat before moving to a softer brush. To curry a horse just means to brush them all over with one of those :)
(Though I suppose if the farmer was hungry enough it could be the other kind as well.)
This has been my favourite film since I was 7, and I understood the story perfectly well. I always feel a little sad when people say it's not for children, because it's a fairytale, it's meant for everyone, dark parts and all.
But I do think it's a story that grows with you, because every time I've watched it through older eyes I've found something new, or my interpretation has changed. Even now, decades after it was released, I continue to see new things in it, or understand things I just didn't notice as a child. It lives in my bones.
This was the film that planted a hunger for stories and storytelling in me. Mommy Fortuna's "She will remember forever that *I* caught her, that *I* held her prisoner! So, there's MY immortality, eh?" blew my 7 year old mind, I actually REMEMBER sitting there, realising that she meant her story would be remembered, and that whole idea just... rewired parts of my brain. The power of a story.
The book is also excellent, though this is one of the rare occasions that I would say the adaptation does a fantastic job, and reading the book AFTER watching the movie enhances both (and then watching the movie again, you SEE where lines in the book have been visually translated, like when she runs from the Bull, snapping twigs and blindly careening forward, you can see the line from the book: "The trees lunged at her, and she veered wildly among them; she who slipped so softly through eternity without bumping into anything." )
Anyway, sorry, I may have thoughts and feels about this movie 😂
I enjoyed the reaction! But if you enjoyed the film I'd suggest it's worth a rewatch on your own time, without needing to be on camera. It's just one of those soft, bittersweet stories that doesn't really get old, and the layers of symbolism can be fun to spend some time with. It's a story that rewards you if you give it space to breathe :)
Edited to add: because I don't see it in other comments, "men" here is used in the old sense meaning "human" though still with overtones of the other meaning. :) It's fallen so out of use it's not surprising younger reactors often misinterpret the line. Language changing like it does :)

In the novel the human spell had been done once before. To a male. I don’t think it was ever said what became of him. I HC he became King Haggard. Human so long he forgot himself, only knowing a deep emptiness. Then he stumbles onto his former kind in the forest. And he is happy for a moment, his soul knowing he was once was one of them, but not his mind. So he becomes obsessed. Chasing and collecting them all, holding his joy. This HC makes his death a release.

    The last unicorn....?
I remember this movie so much. I read the book too. I loved it, but it rips my heart right out every time.... I so much as hear the soundtrack and I get all sad and weepy.
I want a happy ending. But nothing ever ends, as Shmendrick said--- so I'll take a happy beginning....
It strikes me that Amalthea looks rather... familiar.
Supposing, and I'm just supposing here, that Shmendrick the Wizard, in his dotage, visited the unicorn's forest one last time, and found her still there, still immortal, still nursing a broken heart. Suppose she begged him to use his magic to let her somehow fly away from her grief and regret--- and he did.
Suppose he let the magic do as it will, and gave her wings.... magic wings, that let her fly away forever from the world that she knew.
Suppose she flew until she found a place so different she no longer recognized anything. And she settled down, adopted a sister from the funny little ponies that lived there, and helped her to ascend and gain wings of her own---
Suppose over the centuries Amalthea became Celestia. And the pain was dimmed, but she could never forget Prince Lir--- she would remember the color of his eyes when all else had forgotten his name.
Suppose one day, as she's sitting on the throne, that long ago melancholy filling her heart, and her guards bring word-- a stallion claiming to be a Prince from a far off land was at the castle gates... He walks into the throne room, a tall white stallion, tall as her, with a golden mane-- and a graceful horn and snowy wings.
    "Amalthea?"
She didn't move. She was so still, she couldn't have been told from an ivory statue, save for the flash of her throat as she breathed. She remembered him. She REMEMBERED him. Loss as ancient as the sun and moon caught at her heart, at her throat. "Lir?" she whispered.
He said nothing. But she'd remembered his eyes, after all others had forgotten his name. He looked up at her with the same feeling he had all those countless centuries ago, and nodded.
"How?" She answered her own question. "Shmendrick." The name was a laugh, escaping from her lips. "How? How did he know? how did you know?"
He smiled, his stormy eyes as young and alive as ever, as ancient as her own. "What was there to know? He showed me the way you went, and I followed."
Finally, that long ago day and today came crashing together. He ascended the steps of the dais. She ran down from the throne to meet him, Then her cheek was against his, their manes mingling together, soft rainbow shades and burnished gold....
Last Unicorn. First Alicorn. I like it.
