Do you guys ever use drones to check for sharks?
Be good to add context to the timing and that the approach regarding killing sharks is now outdated. We conserve over and above killing sharks.

There probably are drones to help out since the time of the incident.
The fact that the helicopter took the time to film that shark, and sell the story to the paper, but not call it in is truly shameful.

@@EvieDoesStuff768 so? that shark looked like it had every intention of attacking that surfer in the helicopter video. as far as i know, and as common sense would dictate, it is a simple duty to report shark sightings, especially to the lifeguards who patrol the beach where the shark nearly attacked somebody. i completely agree with @Rummycaek and you should be ashamed to forget that people's lives are on the line

They see sharks all the time. The ocean IS theirs.
Sometimes helicopters naturally have video, for training purposes, helping law enforcement.
I live in Florida. Hundreds of miles of coastline. I was taught how to swim before I can really remember, as are most children here. I can't even imagine going in to the ocean without knowing how to swim...I just can't.
Back when I couldn’t swim, I was under very strict observation at all times and was told to stay where my feet can stay COMPLETELY on the sand - no tip toes. As I got a little stronger at swimming it was and still is SWIM IN THE SAFE ZONES. I live up the coast in CT
Oh man tell me about it... I was taught to swim, I even grew up with a swimming pool in my yard and yet I know I'm not a terribly strong swimmer. If I'm in more than six feet of water for more than a few minutes, I'm pretty much drowning.
I know that, I know my limitations, the ocean knows its and so when I do go to the beach I man the bbq and hang out with my dogs. We keep our distance and nobody has to die that day.
I just don't get people who aren't making that calculation any time they go near something as obviously deadly as the friggin ocean

100000% I grew up in England Hastings a sea side town and was taught to swim before I can remeber, although our ocean isn’t as dangerous in regards to sharks and that lot it is just as dangerous when it comes to rips and currents, I couldn’t imagine entering the ocean without having been taught about it and how to swim in it first it’s just mind boggling people don’t realise how dangerous it is and it’s sad to see how many fishermen die each year 😢x
Can't stand people thinking they own the place/ocean/land/life... you're a geust in the sea not the owner. Respect that.

Thanks for updating on the shark attack victim at the end. Horrible! Poor guy. After so many years without attacks. That's some bravery from the lifeguards to get back out there day after day knowing what lurks beneath.

100% agree! When you're working in the water, you've got to remember that you're in marine life territory and need to respect the ocean
@@BondiRescue Not just working, literally anyone entering into the water needs to accept this. The attitude this episode is written in however doesn't paint that picture. It's worded as though it's a human right to be able to swim at Bondi beach, and for some reason the humans have more rights to swim there than the sharks do. The nets wouldn't be there if people actually felt as though they have LESS of a right to be there than the sharks.
Could happen to anyone and it’s apart of the job. My uncle was a police diver and for years said he doesn’t understand how no one has been attacked in the harbour because of the bronze whalers that he would often see and then it happens.
I believe it is much like bears. People throw garbage and food items onto the beaches and shores. Fishermen throw chum into the waters to attract fish which attract the sharks, dolphins and other sea creators. Don’t disrespect the oceans and all whom live there and you and others will be safer. 🌅💕💕♥️❤️
Honestly I love how the French guys handled the situation, they knew that the guy was panicking and that it wasn't the right time to ask unnecessary obvious questions when he was hurt

Head wounds terrify me because it’s so scary when you bleed fast. The Irish gentleman was so nice and calm.
The head and face are very vascular. Usually, the wounds look worse than they are due to all the bleeding. Unless the skull is fx or penetrated in some way, head wounds on the surface heal rapidly 💞
@@16MedicRN I know, I have had a little experience myself (I got a nasty cut just above my eye in high school but thankfully didn’t put out my eye) and I bleed very easily. In the moment it’s always startling
They always look so much worse than they are... Anyone who's done any emergency service or search and/or rescue work will tell you it's usually the injuries you can't immediately see that are the most serious.
You'd be amazed how benign bullet wounds can look... That was the one which surprised me more than once.
I had the same injury happen to me 15+ years ago and all I could think about is he must be in shock. I don't remember it happening to me I just remember my parents horror stories. Not a lot of people really think about this but when trauma like that happens, even if it doesn't break your nose it will cause breathing complications for the rest of your life. I recently just had surgery to correct all the complications it brought to my nose lol

I have seen a shark caught and beaten to death. It was horrific. Unless they attack, they should be left alone... even then it's their ocean and we're in it.

Walking in NYC people get beat up and killed for no reason at all, every day, but they're not sharks, but criminals! The criminals are worse and scarier than sharks in NYC, USA!!
Do remember guys, sharks may be hostile of course but they're not that bad as many think. With the right handling you can usually safely swim with them. Accidents can always happen but its the same with cows and horses.
More people are killed by cows and horses per year, than by sharks

The fear mongering towards sharks have caused a lot of undue hatred and fear towards them as well as people killing them for no reason. Morons who decide to go into the animals environment and act surprised when one out of thousands of those animals attacks you shouldn't be out in that environment. Rare attacks will happen if you are in an environment with wild animals and that is not the animals fault.
Horses are wayyy more dangerous in my opinion, there’s more deaths from horses a year than sharks
Those surfers that saved that guys life are heroes, not only the pulled him out of the water but they've also kept the guy from going into shock. They kept him calm and kept talking to him which is the right thing to do, someone there knew first aide which saved the man's life.
I was irritated earlier in the video when I saw the daily telegraph front page titled "Shark Attack Danger Ignored" and I can see that the lifeguards were irritated as well and took it quite personally. I would have also if I were them. I feel it was the duty of whoever was in that helicopter to notify the lifeguards of that threat so they could take proper action. It was by no means a lack of duty by the lifeguards! These men and women in blue are absolutely amazing!!💙

To be fair the everyone responsible for filming that footage did ignore the shark attack danger, so the headline was technically correct. But it was The Daily Trashagraph so who knows what they made up in the article.
This episode was a roller coaster. Someone gets smacked in the face with a surf board. The lifeguards save four people at once. A person lost an arm/hand to a shark. Seeing the shark attack victim's hand just flopped over like that was a bit terrifying. I hope the guy is doing alright now.
That older fellow at the end is absolute right, if you go into open water you as a human should accept that is not our domain we are but visitors. respect the ocean you might get a piece remove from you.

Many people who have experienced shark attacks have been very vocal that they KNOW this is a risk, and understand it's not their domain, and that they still respect (or even still love!) sharks. Your comments imply you've been attacked by one, and if that's the case I'm sorry you experienced that. It's no different than going into any other animals territory, you should be aware and understand that risk, regardless if you've experienced an attack or not.
I would add that the probability of getting bitten by a shark is so low it's insignificant, they don't even eat human flesh, 99% of the time they only take a bite and then leave. Same with killer whale, they are harmless.
Of course the probability is a bit higher if you are a surfer since they may misidentify you for a prey.

The lack of sharks isn’t really something to celebrate - it’s a big problem for the oceans and us.
Australia's inshore waters are absolutely loaded with sharks. Considerably different from offshore including different species of sharks. When you have 30,000+ people on a beach inside a Bay, a lack of sharks is absolutely something to celebrate. Inshore shark species are not endangered like some of the offshore species and it's not as though every part of the ocean is lacking sharks. Offshore on the East Coast of the US is flooded with sharks for example. It's mainly Asian and South American waters that are being decimated.
@@JeffSmith-eq3kc found research by Australian experts and they say the opposite - for instance, numbers off Queensland coast declined by 90% in last 50 years. Species including great whites, tigers, hammerheads etc etc hugely affected - numbers declined by 92%. Depends what your world view is I suppose, as to whether you think this is good or bad news.

@@ponggaaa4854 with respect you’re totally missing the point. You need to read all of the responses, including mine. The lack of sharks in coastal areas is indicative of a wider issue - i.e. a massive global fall in shark numbers due to over fishing (shark fin market being the biggest culprit), habitat loss, pollution etc etc. Oceans are huge but they are also highly vulnerable, and with 8 billion people in the world and rising it’s ultimately likely to be very bad news in the next few decades, unless there is a miraculous turnaround, which sadly I can’t see happening.
Those Indian guys that went one after the other to save their 1 friend deserve respect. They really stuck together and didn't leave their friend alone to basically die. That's true friendship right there.
yes I see what you are saying but same time that friendship could turn 1 body into 12, sometimes you need to make sure you understand if you rescue someone and fail you are now part of the problem, a double edge sword friendship.

I find it so strange that people can't swim. I learnt from a young age and I'm thankful for that, so I just can't picture someone who when they are suspended in water can't just start naturally treading...
Seems to be a regular issue on these episodes with visitors from India and the middle East in general not really knowing how to swim or disregarding the general rules of the beach. Lots of vids of them harassing girls.

The blood looked really gnarly but it was just a small cut. The broken nose on the other hand is an issue although the pain is bearable. Mate will be alright, just needs to get it treated, otherwise it will be crooked forever 😅

These guys do an amazing job - they put themselves at risk every time they go in. If the helicopter doesn't communicate, they need a drone to get an aerial view for themselves!

It’s definitely interesting to me, I live in Hawaii as a born and raised Hawaiian so I’m a very comfortable swimmer and could be in rough-ish waters for a pretty long time. But I’m always baffled when people who are not from here and clearly tourists start going out farther than me (and you can tell their moving with some difficulty) especially because I am aware of all the rip currents and dangerous zones since I have been going to those beaches for years, but I presume most of them are not. Crazy really
Born and raised on big island and people just never know when to stop. Especially in Waipio Valley my dad's jumped in and grabbed people getting thrown around before, the signs are there for a reason.
Many near drowning and broken necks from Sandy’s . Also , from Hanauma bay , many drownings looks nice and calm but it’s dangerous
I also am a native Floridian (50 years living on the coast and 13 years on a lake). I learned to swim by age 3, swam on the Orlando juniors swim team then swam on jr and sr high teams. The very first thing I ever taught my children was how to handle a rip current. Every time for the rest of their lives before entering the ocean we went over how to handle a rip current / basically every summer day, every fall day we went over rip current protocol. All my kids ended up being life guards and saw first hand how panicked people get in rip currents. Fortunately they only had to do a few rip rescues. The other safety talk was about sharks. Where we swim/surf at home we usually don’t get the more aggressive sharks nevertheless the no no is early morning swimming/surfing and sunset swimming/surfing and absolutely NO night swimming. And we all know that even with precautions we may get caught in a rip, we may get bitten by a shark but at least we are prepared and aware!
My parents did the same to me. Taught me how to swim at a very early age. I'm going to do the same to my children. It should be a priority for everyone
good job, it’s crazy to see the amount of parents that go to foreign countries and let their kids who don’t know how to swim, go into said foreign waters. there’s really no excuse, not even being landlocked, in the 21st century it’s easy to do research
The best way to avoid sharks when swimming off a beach is to watch out for drop off points.Stay close to shore, where you can still see the bottom and where reefs/ rocky places are present.Don’t go beyond them.Sharks like drop offs because of how food like fish congregate there.

An old seafarer was once asked how you can know if there is a shark in the area. He said, " Well, you take a tablespoon down to the water's edge and as a wave comes in you fill the spoon with water. Check the spoon to make sure there is no sand in the spoon. If there is none then taste the water. If it is salty there is a shark in the water!" 😋

Yikes, it reminds me why I started learning about signs of sharks and what to do when faced with one. Not often we get a shark here at Rehoboth beach but always good to be ready.
I have been in Rehoboth once a summer for 18 years now and have never seen A shark or heard of one however a good view from my relatives apartment gave me a good view of a few Orca Killer whales not to far off shore.

Sharks are literally just on their home, so we need to be respectful and understand they could attack thinking of food. Of course it's scary to hear people being attacked, severe injured or even die, things like these just happen sadly.

@@krow9710 humans are not a part of a shark's diet. If they were, more people would be eaten whole and not just get their hand/leg injured. A paddling human resembles a seal from beneath. And they (seals) are in fact something sharks like to snack on. But since sharks do not have hands like humans do, to test if something is what they think it is, they must use their mouths! So no, sharks are not "predators of humans".

Yea, it’s super sad. I’m not naive to the dangers sharks can pose to humans, but I don’t agree with nets when they end up killing them. I wish we had a way to keep swimmers safe without hurting sharks. I know that when I enter the water I put myself at risk, but I dive and know I take that risk, as I think most divers and surfers would agree.
@@samco63 Yes, it's heartbreaking to see any sealife caught up in those nets, turtles dolphins drowning slowly because they can't come up for air, even sharks have to keep moving to breath. It's sad the human race is so selfish and put their lives above all other life when we trespass in their territory.
But then again, it’s putting one animal live, against about 700 human lives, humans and sea life area separated. No question about it.

My dad was Navy taught me to swim and I have great respect for the sea, I much prefer pools rather than the sea,Bondi looks far to dangerous at times with the rips,I'm a strong swimmer I wouldn't attempt those waves. Sorry for the surfer but at least he's alive .
Towers and binoculars are crucial but a dedicated drone team could direct lifeguards in the water to a victim or drop a line or float much more quickly
I love what you guys do; it's upsetting that Glenn was attacked. I hope that he will get better and will still be able to pursue what he loves best, No one should have to go through that trauma, Glenn, you guys, or just anyone in general. I hope this makes more people aware of what might happen and how we should all be careful and aware that we are not alone in the water.
Every time I see shark attack & bondi beach in the same sentence I think of that dude who faked a shark attack but turns out he just robbed someone & the “shark bite” was injury from a window he put his arm through 💀

I wonder if drones would also help them patrol the waters for sharks? Dunno if the winds would make that too unrealistic, but an aerial view seems like something they could use
I thought the same thing. There’s commercial type drones that could handle most of those wind conditions and you could survey a large swath of water in a short time. Seems like a no brainer too me but maybe it’s just not in their budget to go the drone route. Or not yet anyway.
Drones weren't really a thing in 2010.
This was in 09/10 but they did do a little program a couple years back with drones I’m pretty sure.

The 6 guys drowning was scary but very comedic in the way that they just all one by one got stuck in the rip

Ima be honest, idk why people go in the water if they cant swim, get some lessons first. Maybe stick to a pool. Learning how to swim is super valuable. Started as a toddler and been fine ever since. Even just learning how to float on your back is huge cause its pretty hard to drown at tht point unless theres huge waves

It's extremely common for sharks to be in the surf in FL and CA. Shark attacks are very rare.
You have to take certain precautions, don’t go past the reefs, stays as close to the shore as possible, don’t go near large schools of fish, etc. As a swimmer, I try to stay just past where I can stand with my head mostly above water, my surfer friends make sure to check certain websites to learn about any shark in the area.
I HATE that people have the natural curious urge to TOUCH. DONT TOUCH THE WILDLIFE. we’ve touched it enough already…

The Salt of the Ocean are tears of misunderstood sharks, many sharks mistake the people for food as juveniles. The sharks own the ocean and we need to respect them.

I'd go back out. I live in an area that gets great whites in the summer and I have been told since I could swim that there are great whites in the harbor when its warm enough. My grandfather who's a marine biologist taught me at a young age that sharks aren't out to get us and that they're quite beautiful creatures. I still swim off a family friends dock that is in the harbor and I always take a little extra time to sit there to see if I can spot any fins.

Glad I came across your channel. Love it❤️ My oldest child's grandmother died by drowning and although we had a swimming pool, she doesn't do beaches, lakes, etc. My youngest daughter almost drowned in South Carolina here in the United States (someone said it's because tides we pulling her down), thank goodness my cousin's husband was there & saved her. It REALLY scared her and she was afraid to swim for awhile.

I played water polo for years in highschool, swam in highschool, have been swimming since I was a child, as my grandmother taught all of us in her backyard pool as young as 5, but I know that I am no match for the ocean- nobody is. These lifeguards always provide a very sobering reminder.

I love that the homies were willing to die for their friends like they couldn't swim either but they saw a homie in need and went for it

I'm not happy a shark is patrolling around Bondi beach, but the day after an attack is the kind of day I would go to the beach. I would rather hang by the shore anyway, checking out what has washed up, listening to only the surf and birds, no loud crowds, maybe sit in the sand where the water rushes up onto my legs...that's bliss to me. So the day after is my prime beach time, weirdly.
RiP currents are deadly. Even a strong swimmer could drown. We always swam horizontal to shore to get out of one.
I lived in Florida for a time in an area with many many sharks. There are things you can do to protect against shark attacks, like not being in the water at times of lower visibility, dusk etc.
I am much more afraid of all those powerful rip currents that seem to constantly be running at Bondi. I mean there seem to be 4 or 5 at all times.
If I ever get back to Australia and Sidney, you won’t catch me in that surf, even to meet a hunky lifeguard. 😉
For many years I have thought that it would be an amazing cooperative experience to have trained dolphins who could patrol the seas.
They would have an alarm system in place to alert the lifeguards of a shark situation.

We are so vulnerable in the water. I know now why I steer clear of natural bodies of water and stick to man-made pools. If something like a riptide got me I would be toast, and soggy toast at that!
Sharks are one of my favorite animals. They don’t hunt humans. They mistake humans for another one of their prey and unfortunately attack at times but that is because they can’t tell the difference. They are a vital part of the ecosystem. Without them, ocean life will crumble. Remember when you are in the ocean, you are in their home. How would you feel if people came into your home and killed you because they were scared of the possibility of you hurting another person? How is that fair? People need to remember that we are apart of ecosystems that we share with other animals and plants. Just because we are the most developed organisms on earth, that doesn’t mean we are more important than other organisms.

I mean we kinda are more important. If your child died in a shark attack would you just shrug it off and say "its okay the shark was more important than my own child anyway"
Scuba diving has always been a desire of mine. What a beautiful ocean and twem swimming with all the fish and hearing the sea life is healthy.

That’s pretty rare, shark nets are just meant to separate sharks, and the beach. Nothing else.
