R53 Mini Cooper S Transmission Fluid Change DIY

- Changing the fluid on the R53 Mini's Getrag manual transmission is about as simple as it gets. If you have ever drained another transmission, differential, or transfer case, this is the same procedure...
1. Break the fill plug FIRST!
2. Then, undo the drain plug to drain out the fluid
3. Inspect fluid for signs of excessive wear
4. Replace drain plug
5. Fill the transmission until a bit of fluid drains from the fill hole (you'll need a pump)
6. Torque everything down and check for leaks
It’s really that simple. It shouldn’t take more than half an hour from start to finish. You can use whatever fluid brand you prefer, but a synthetic is definitely a good investment. It should be some variation of MTL 75W/80 GL-4. You’ll need two quarts but won’t use all of it.

Thank you for your hard work, very informative. Will give it a go myself!
This is super handy and timely as I was just thinking of this on my R53, thanks for posting the howto.
Happy to help!
Interesting watch that is pal! If you love your (older) mini this kind of stuff needs to be done to keep them healthy.is a question weather you pay someone to do or do it yourself.Rally enjoy the video
You say 1.5L? My 03 took over 1.8 (which is what I saw online). Which is it?
Add fluid until spills from the fill hole. Don't overcomplicate it.
Is this the same procedure for the auto and what’s the pump name? I need one or something similar
The auto will likely be different; I'm not sure. The pump is just a random one from the parts store.
I know mine took well over 2. Online calls for 6 quarts????
There's no way it would fit 6; it's just under 2 quarts if the car is positioned level.
@@350Z247 okay thanks for the help. Mine must be up a little higher in the back on jack stands. I thought that was insane when I read that. Lol.
@@SethHollingshead If it ends up with a bit more than 2 quarts, I don't think it will hurt anything. You should be good as is.
Don't you need a copper washer after?
Yes, any time you remove an old copper washer you should replace it.
@@350Z247 do you know what size washer it is to replace? I guess i could call a mini dealership and ask if they have them but ill probably get ripped off with the price
@@CoastlinesCollide I bought a large variety pack of copper washers years ago. Definitely worth the investment.
The trans has a magnet inside about 2 and 1/2 inch diameter it looks like a big wafer
Good to know, but my guess is they are all pretty saturated by now
Hi…This is an Automatic Transmission ?
No
its that easy!? dealer was gonna charger $600 fck them thank you.
Happy to help
DIFFERENTIAL OIL NOT TRANSMISSION OIL. change title
It's a FWD and thus a shared cavity...so close
Not real smart are eh?
@@heyhayhay247 Some people just don't know what they don't know.
