  • In this video, I changed the transmission fluid on a 2004 MINI Cooper S R53 with the 6 speed Getrag MT285/GS6-85 manual transmission/transaxle.
    Time required: approx. 30-45mins
    Tools required: drain pan, 8mm hex socket, ratchet, fluid pump
    Fluid used: 2 quarts Redline MTL www.amazon.com/Red-Line-Trans...
    Pump used: amzn.com/B000BQW5LK
    Notes: Original fill on 2002-2004 6spd manual transmissions is Texaco MTF-94. On late 2004-2006 models w/o limited slip differential, BMW MTF-LT3. Late 2004-2006 models w/ limited slip are filled with MTF-94. I have not heard any reports where Redline MTL harmed any first gen MINI R53 transmissions. In this case, shifting became much smoother and the difference was very noticeable especially in cold weather. The transmission is also much quieter as well.
    Torque spec on fill/drain plugs: 32 ft/lbs
    I created this video with the UA-cam Video Editor ( / editor )

    AKJeeper thank you so much for taking the time to make this helpful and informative video for all of us. Many have opinions of different brands of oils and lubes and all are valid in some context depending on the situation and individual. I want to change my transmission oil and as long as I follow the spec. that Mini recommends all will be right with the world :) I tend to agree with you, after over 50 years of working on my own vehicles I am not a fan of most additives. Keep up the good work my Friend!

    my local mechanic quoted a $250 fee for this very service on my 2003 S claiming the process required a separate pumping device to replenish the fluid and is less than a simple old-school fluid drain. This seemed less than practicable. I balked and am glad I did.

    GENIUS!!! "Lifetime" oil really does directly translate to ""warranty period only" in Manufacturer/main dealer (stealer) speak! I write with experience of the VW 4x4 haldex failure conspiracy fact. They dont give a fuchs.
    Transmission oil on Land Rover manual transmissions should be replaced every year. As told by a leding transmission specialist, so why would other cars be different? Nice vid.

    Thank you for the knowledge. I've a Mini Cooper S 2007 R56 and its very difficult to shift to the second gear when the car is cold especially in the morning. Many people suggested to change to Redline MT-90 GL4 75W-90 plus Liqui Moly 2019 MoS2 Anti-Friction Gear Lubricant. The car shift slightly better to the second gear in at cold temperature but the problem still there. Would like to know what do you suggest? Should i change the oil to Red Line MTL (50204) SAE 75W80 Gl-4 ? Thank you

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  7 років тому

      Do you have the optional Limited Slip Differential (LSD)? And how many miles on your transmission? Generally, on MINIs with the LSD - I run the factory MTF-94 fluid. I have put in Red Line MTL and AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid in R56 vehicles per customer request, and have not heard any bad reports from any of the owners yet.

    • @MooneyM20J
      @MooneyM20J 7 років тому

      I don't know whats LSD, The cluck was change at 70K and the car has 100K on it. when i called the dealer and i gave them the vin number they gave me this part number 83222339223. which is MANUAL TRANSMISSION MTF-LT-4 75w-90 so i thought Redline MT-90 would be ideal the both GL4 and 75W90.. but now after the oil replacement i see more forms about MTL 75W80... Any suggestion how the car can shift better in cold start up ? Thanks

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  7 років тому

      You can try the 75w80 fluid but if it continues to have shifting issues, I'm afraid your transmission may have issues with the synchronizers. Even with the old fluid my car was never hard to shift when cold. I just noticed the Redline fluid made things noticeably smoother.

    • @MooneyM20J
      @MooneyM20J 7 років тому

      Thank you very much. I'm planing to change it to RedLine MTL which is 75w-80. Apparently i called many specialist and they said since the dealer change the spec to 83222339223 which MTF-LT-4 75w-90 this whats many cause it in the morning. Royal Purple Oil said i can assure you the original oil needs to be GL4 75W-80 for this car when it came out but now they change the spec.
      Do you prefer Redline MTL or Royal Purple Synchromax. They both are Gl-4 75w-80 ? Thank you very much !

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  7 років тому

      Yes, it's likely that a fluid change would help things unless the transmission is having other issues, like internal damage or sensor problems. Unfortunately I don't have a video on the automatic transmission fluid change. It is a bit more involved than the 6spd manual transmission shown in my video. Here is a good guide, though: www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&ved=0ahUKEwj2gK2jurXRAhVR5GMKHUsNCLMQFghGMAM&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.motoringalliance.com%2Fforums%2Fattachments%2Fcooper-s-clubman-s-engine-and-drivetrain%2F2728d1332368330-6-speed-automatic-diy-atf-change-mini-atf-change.pdf&usg=AFQjCNFn_lYDhTqplztDaMatgqX2N6z8WA&sig2=bSxwkAg9giwdlUNgkrmCXw&cad=rja

      I found the following link about the transmission fluid for Minis: new.minimania.com/MINI_Cooper_Transmission_Fluids

    • @mrmhandley1
      @mrmhandley1 5 років тому

      Looking through that link Le Huan Tran posted it appears to me that the spec for the viscosity of the manual transmission fluid changed in July 2004 from MTF-2 (75w80) to MTF-LT-4 (75w90), because of "issues". Would it be better to use the redline MT90 which is 75w90? I looked on the redline site and put my wife's 2005 cooperS convertible in and it said that MT90 is not recommended, and MTL was recommended, but I wonder if redline are going off the original spec and not the updated one? I'm a bit confused. Her car is close to 100 miles and the transmission sounds really very whiny. We are in Texas so was thinking a heavier oil would be best because of the heat in summer down here. It's not like she is ever going to drive up to Canada in the dead of winter, she hates cold weather.

    Is it the camera angles or did you not use the jack points on a mcs?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  6 років тому +1

      Bred Saint I will never get underneath a vehicle that isn’t securely supported - I know someone who got crushed when a jack failed. You can clearly see all 4 jack stands under the car at roughly the 30 second mark. I’ll use the factory jack points for the jack but always use solid crossmembers for the jack stands. I want the vehicle rock steady before I even think about going underneath. The plastic jack points are not a suitable spot for jack stands, in my opinion.

    @AKJeeper Hello, thank you for video, i have mini cooper s 2005, 6speed manual transs., i want to add some fluid, i think its never been done before, is it ok to add MTF-94, because in my contry there is only this fluid avilable, is there be no problem if oils be mixed (I dont know which oil is in the gearbox right now, but from your description it is BMW MTF-LT3.
    My cooper s is from februar 2005, and I think he dont have limited slip. Best regards.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  7 років тому +1

      MTF-94 is a little bit thinner (75w-80 GL4) gear oil compared to MTF-LT3 (75w90 GL4). If you just need to top off a low transmission, I don't believe that MTF-94 would have any adverse effects on your transmission, compared to running the transmission low on fluid. Have you looked at your transmission yet? Some of these transmission will have a tag on them indicating which fluid was used as the factory fill. Also, if you can't find LT3, perhaps you can find a good quality 75W90 GL4 gear oil (do NOT use GL5).

    • @tmp61
      @tmp61 7 років тому

      Thank you very much for answer, can you tell my were to look for tag (to see which fluid go factory) at transsmiton compare with your video. 👍🏻best regards !

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  7 років тому +1

      tmp61 Not all transmissions will have a tag. I see them every once in a while on BMW products. If the transmission has a tag, it will be near the fill and drain plugs on the transmission.

  • @eurothrasher2823
    @eurothrasher2823 7 років тому +1

    MTF-94 = 05-06 MCS which came with limited slip . The MTF-LT3 is for 02-04 without limited slip which is about 99% of them. I think like other things in your video you have it backwards....
    Which is why MTF-94 is what is used in 2nd Gen since by that time LSD was no longer option but standard...

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  7 років тому

      I'll have to review the video again, but in the video description I have the fluid specs as you described:
      Late 2004 (post 7/2004) vehicles through 2006: MTF-LT3 (75w90) w/o limited slip, MTF-94 (75w80) with limited slip.
      Keep in mind, 2002 through 7/2004 vehicles w/o LSD also use the thinner MTF-94 (75w80) fluid.
      If I slipped up when talking in the video, I'll be sure to edit it and put the corrected information in it. Thank you for your comment.
