  • In light of the recent Rich Energy/ Haas F1 debacle, I think it's wise to remind my fellow NASCAR fans, that our motorsport of choice has had a tumultuous history when it comes to sponsors, track promoters and team owners as well. Here's just a few cases of the worst liars thieves, and lawyers to ever disgrace NASCAR with their presence.

Forrest Alston, shit Formula One is just as hilariously shady. The attempts to spy on other teams would make the British Secret Service blush. A fight broke out in one garage when an F1 team owner got caught snooping under the car of one of his rivals and a mechanic caught and dragged him out!
In an equally funny but brilliant example of ingenuity, one team owner suspected a rival team was running a new kind of wing that would allow for very unusual suspension settings. He told his wife to make him some tartan pants! But he strictly insisted the squares all be precisely spaced. He walked up to the car and stood next to it while his wife snapped a picture. They were able to use rough mathematical calculations and it confirmed the suspension was set much lower than he anticipated. So he told his mechanics to ignore his driver's protests and set the suspension even lower!
And my all time favorite: in 1998, McLaren were accused by F1 magazine of running a special braking system that had not yet been outlawed by the judges so they sent their photographer to snoop around the garage. To his astonishment, McLaren foolishly left their car totally unattended. He stuck his camera in the cockpit floor and snapped a few pics and ran before anyone noticed him. McLaren's directors were absolutely shocked when the new braking system was front page news on the magazine's next issue!
And that's the verrrryyy tip of the iceberg!

Its a story thats been around since racing. When I was a youngster, we hardly ever raced on paved tracks, it was too expensive. We raced on dirt. Plenty in our area. We raced McGregor Speedway on Friday night, we raced Barberville ( called Volusia County now ) on Saturday, and raced Satsuma ( changed to Lake County Speedway) on Sunday if there was anything left of the car. We finally raced Samsula Speedway, in a big race, and against any odds, finished second. Except the payout window had been closed before the race ended, and the promoter gone. Left Fla. in '79 and the track still had not reopened . I have seen races since on the same track, so I assume someone bought it and handle it correctly now. Called New Smyrna now.

The manifold incident might have its roots at Bill Davis Racing. While Waltrip was racing for BDR, a friend of mine, who was the operations manager at the time, shared it with me. According to him, when the car would pit, the crew guy cleaning the windshield would smear a gel compound that was in his free hand over the air intake, as he leaned across the car. My friend said the car would get a boost for a few laps, until the gel had dissipated. This was eventually noticed by a NASCAR official, who warned them not to do it again. Being that this was probably reported and shared with other officials, this meant that they had to stop doing it altogether. It seems very possible that a former BDR team member, or even Waltrip himself, brought this this trick with them to MWR.

Two others you could've mentioned was Big Daddy's Barbecue Sauce sponsoring Junie Donleavy's team with Mike Harmon in 1999. They were supposed to be on the #90 car full time but Donleavy discovered something fishy when all their checks were bouncing, and their team ended up being part time with a variety of drivers and sponsorless for most of '99 until Hills Bros. came on board at the end of the season. Ironic enough Big Daddy came back for 2000 to sponsor the #41 Larry Hedrick Motorsports car driven by Rick Mast, but once again their checks were bouncing and unlike Donleavy's team, Hedrick had no other backup sponsorship plans and they were forced to shut down, leaving Mast to move over to the #14 Conseco AJ Foyt car. The other big one was Angela's Motorsports which showed up at Daytona in 2003 with cars being bought from Robert Yates, Harold Holly as the crew chief and Mike McLaughlin as the driver. It seemed to be an all star team in the making and they were the fastest in testing before all this shady stuff happened and the team dissolved before even running the 500. Even though McLaughlin was already in his 40's, this pretty much killed the rest of his career.

I remember when Lola tried to run their own F1 car, intending to enter into the sport in 1998 (in order to get the most out of new regulations coming in that year. However, their title sponsor, MasterCard, wanted them to enter F1 in 1997. The result was, inevitably enough, the car that was produced, the T97/30, was hopelessly off the pace. The rules state that a car and team can only race if the driver(s) sets a time within 107% of pole position (Jacques Villeneuve set a pole position time of one minute 29.369, so the rest of the field had to be faster than one 35.625 in order to qualify). The team's debut was the 1997 Australian Grand Prix, and the hurried nature of the car's build was self evident. Vincenzo Sospiri, the faster of the two was 11.6 seconds off pole position and Ricardo Rosset (who had a year of F1 experience under his belt) was 12.7 seconds off the pace. Needless to say, they were not allowed to race and MasterCard were so livid with the team's hopeless performance that they pulled out of their deal on the eve of the second Grand Prix, refusing to pay up

My dad raced at GP back in the late 60's and early 70's when it was both dirt and asphalt, and I ran there in the Charger division in the early 90's with your granddad and uncle. I would love to sit down with you and look through the old photos and swap stories about GP and the Blackwell boys.

Your videos remind me of WrestleLamia due to the NASCAR info and I hope you keep up the good work

Sun Energy will be on this list in the next 5 years. Bet. they sponsor so much in motorsports but from what I've been told none of the teams have ever seen anything from the company that is worth nearly as much as they're spending. The checks are clearing but no one knows why.

They were apparently sued over unbuilt projects just this year too. I know Kenny Habul owns the company and it seemed like he used it to buy his way into rides he really wasn't prepared for. Also did the same thing DC Solar did. Started small with the spending but then started spending more and more way too quickly for a company most people have never heard of. Also, Habul's last motorsports venture was the Bathurst 12 Hour this past January. Makes you wonder if he got spooked by the DC Solar debacle and thought keeping up the high profile racing involvement would get him found out quicker.

Sounds like Ameriquest as well. In one race in the Busch Series, they sponsored all four of the Roush cars in the race (back when Roush had a Busch operation and was respectable). By 2007, they were extinct.

@@DupontandLowesWarrior Stacy bilked the Dutch Government out of somewhere around $10-12 million. He was supposed to be promoting and marketing a thin seam coal mining machine, but he used the money to operate his race teams. Then when the money ran out he tried to start Raceland, a dirt track racing organization to compete with the NDRA. He managed to talk several contractors in the Kingsport, TN area to convert the Kingsport Speedway from asphalt to dirt with payment when they were through. I was the Director of Marketing for Raceland , and I sold several race night sponsorships and other sponsor packages to Pepsi Cola, Coors, Hardees, Shoney's and many more. The revenue I brought in was the only money he had as it turned out. I was duped by Stacy and did not receive a large part of the commissions he owed me. One day after he was turned down for a loan by Bruton Smith, he disappeared.
