    Just a fun fact for everyone: Military bows, especially from 1000AD onwards, are often 100lb and up. The draw weight of the Mary Rose longbows is variously estimated; the estimate of their average draw weight is about 130lb. A surviving Mongol conquest-era bow is estimated at 166lb. Surviving Ottoman military bows average over 100lb.

      Yup: It is comical when Hollywood etc have women drawing bows... Swords(short generally), yes, as that is historically accurate, but bows? Yikes... Try again! Most men could not pull the big warbows and generally settled for the smaller warbows. Modern Compound bows make us all better than the old timers.

    • @mgtocrateezspeaks3971
      @mgtocrateezspeaks3971 Рік тому +51

      @tanneradams20 there's a misconception in Hollywood that bows are light and swords are heavy. We see women archers twanging away like it's a rubber band, yet lugging a sword like its a log. The truth is the opposite. Swords typically weigh less 5 lbs, excluding the larger varieties. Bows, in order to be strong enough to drop an unclothed man, should be around 40+lbs, and don't get me started on the armor. The bows back then had to be heavy to not only cover great distances, but to hit with enough force to penetrate armor. Horse bows are typically lighter because they're used at a closer range, are smaller for use on horseback, and were made for more rapid fire.

      I remember, I found my father's old bayonet back when I was about 8. He was still in the military at the time, but this was his old bayonet, I believe for the M16 which was phased out. I was amazed by it.
      He told me when I was old enough, I could have it. I've remembered it ever since. About 5 years ago, he was going through his old stuff, and my brother and I were both visiting. I see my brother with the old bayonet, and it turns out, my dad gave it to him. He completely forgot he ever said anything to me about it. I can't lie, that one hurt, especially considering I went into the military while my brother didn't. I idolized my dad.

    Just a note for the future, use both arms. Push the bow out *whilst* pulling the string back. All at once, one motion. For a forward draw, you need to turn your torso forwards, and pull back using it along with your arm. If you're trying to simply draw over your torso, you'll have almost no power in your arm to perform the draw.

    - Start low _(aimed at ground)_
    - Lock the elbow of your stabilization arm. _(left)_
    - Swing the bow up, elbow staying locked, use your back and shoulder muscles together of your drawing arm. _(right)_
    - Twist your upper body towards the direction of your drawing arm _(right),_ using your shoulder and back of your stabilization arm to push the bow forward.
    Once you get this series of movements down, as they basically all flow into one movement, you'll find it vastly easier to draw heavier bows. Much heavier bows. You are engaging every major muscle group in your upper body by doing this.

    Longbows recovered from the wreck of the Mary Rose (sank 1545) were estimated to have draw weights of 100 to 160 lbs. It took years of practice to build the correct muscles and become proficient. Just imagine shooting 6 to 10 arrows a minute for an extended period.

    • @shadowz8579
      @shadowz8579 8 місяців тому

      Hmm many longbows were up to 200 pounds and the Mongolians had their recurve bows. Just very slightly less power but another smaller so they can use them on horses. Imagine shooting arrows on horse back. And they use to shoot so many they actually had runners that would bring more arrows on horses. That way they would just have an entire mounted army and just pepper the enemy from a distance. Now THAT must be hard

      I have a hoyt VTM 80# and can draw effortlessly. I can shoot 100 arrows out of it in one training session without any pressure.
      When I shoot, I don't need to care about wind because I shoot heavier arrows yet they still fly faster then other people's. You gain accuracy with higher draw weight.

      @@sovietrepublic38 not at all the point I’m making. I’m all for going above and beyond in power with just about any sport/hobby/etc. archery is the one thing where the curve of draw weight/draw length has a STEEP drop off and below marginal difference for those that feel the need to crank up the weight. Something I will never understand. Guys will pull 26/27/28 inches and think throwing on 80lb limbs are gonna take them to the promised land. I shoot 30.5 inch and at 73lbs on my 11 year old monster, I’ll go toe to toe IBO with any clown that shoots 80/90/100lb on any bow of their choosing.
