@@RealRidez yes I bought my first 928 at 16 years old in 2005. I’ve since owned 3 different 928’s. I have a ‘84 euro 5 speed twin distributor 4.7 now that is about be restored. I’m truly obsessed
First one at 16? That's amazing! Good for you! How difficult is it to restore a 928 these days? I assume its not easy considering the need for rare parts combined with today's general supply chain challenges.
Sorry for the late reply. Parts are no issue! Roger at 928srus or Mark at 928Intl have everything you’d need. It’s been tedious. Just bought #98 built spring of ‘77. Euro spec single mirror pasha 5 speed! Sat for 20 years. I’m deep in it now no going back
I had though I would never have a 928 then out of the blue at 58 years old I saw one at a price I could afford in good running order. I bought it immediately and I don’t regret it a single bit !
What a lovely and extremely eloquant guy. His story is quite touching and he and his wife seem to have it licked as a family unit. I watch a lot of classic car vids and get tired of the big "hey guys!" intro's with people nearly shouting at you throughout, i found this vid informative, genuine and really quite insipiring. Thanks for this and when i get my S4, i'll base my vid on this one. Thank you from th UK. PS, if you wife has a sister :)
Ive always fantasized about these cars, even to this day..Im 63 and test drove these in my late 20's..they were the stuff of dreams and had a Special, ultra unique quality about them..be it the body style or the dogleg 5 spd or the dash, it exuded a Differentness and gave off a low key exotic feel as opposed to a "Look at me" one.
Well done for Darren. My story mirrors yours exactly. I fell in love with the 928 in 1985 at the age of 15. Finally bought a 1989 S4 in February of 2021. Mine isn't quite as "showroom" as yours although I’m getting enormous pleasure out of having work done on it each year as the budget allows. The good news is it's still in great condition and drives fantastic!
My dad owned a 928 when I was 12. Promised myself I would own one.... Sometime... I am now 54, and my son gave me a 1984 as a gift... 4 years ago...THE BEST ENGINEERED CAR IN THE WORLD.
I always admired the 928's as well. It was just out of this world back in the 90's even (when I was a young guy). The design has certainly aged well. I think people are finally starting to realize how well built car this was. It was always overshadowed as a classic car by air cooled 911's but maybe things are changing. Good GT's and GTS's demand high money these days. Enjoy your 928. Great video!!!
Well said! There seems to be a larger interest in the 928 lately. Perhaps we’ll get a chance to see more on the road soon. Thanks for watching and for supporting the channel 🙏
I've owned 9 Porsche's over the past 25 years, including two manual (85 & 86) 928's for a total of 16 years. I can honestly say that I've never owned any car that was more reliable and have never once experienced a single electrical issue (gremlin). They are amazingly fun to drive & absolutely rock solid in every aspect. The 85-86 are the sweet spot IMHO, because they're the only years where you have the original body style combined with the glorious 5.0 liter 32V V8. My advice is to find yourself the lowest mileage & properly cared for (service history & manual) example possible before they blow up even more in value and appreciate to the point that they actually deserve to be.
Hi Norm. Thank you taking the time to watch the video and for your comment. I agree with you that the 928's have not reached their true value. In time, I too believe they'll blow up in price and will become a true collector's car for any enthusiast, and not just for Porsche or 928 fans. I hope you enjoy your cars and wish you many happy miles with happy smiles. Thanks for watching.
This is one of my dream cars and by far to me the best looking Porsche ever. It is so unique and yes, the back end is legendary. But I have to say, the 944, 944 Turbo, and 928 S4 are the best looking front end designs Porsche ever made IMO. I have only driven the 944. I grew up reading Car & Driver, Motor Trend and when I saw the S4, I thought it was the greatest car ever. I've obtained one of my dream cars already, but this is definitely on the short list of 3 and obtainable. The third (not so obtainable) is the McLaren F1.
Hi Kem! So glad you enjoyed the video. The 944 definitely has a great front end, and definitely a fan of the F1. Really appreciate your support and taking the time to leave a comment. I hope you enjoy the other stories featured on the channel. Cheers!
Had to wait till I turned 41 to buy the car I dreamed of since I first saw one from close. Found in Miami a low mileage manual S4, black with linen leather seats. Still have it 31 years after. Brought it back to France, and still can't believe how lucky I am to be able to drive it several times a month except in winter. Still beautiful, amazingly comfortable and stable at illegal speeds. A head-turner more than ever, which doesn't really matters to me, but each time I look at it, I find it as gorgeous as on day one. I even stare at it in my garage, and thank again my Dear wife who has always liked the car and never, ever, even in tough times, asked me part with it. I hope to be able to continue driving 'the beast' a few more years !
Hi Darren. I don't know if you will see my message. But know that you put tears in my eyes. I happen to have the exact same passion as you and since the same age. I am 48 years old and I have been dreaming of owning a Porsche 928 since I was 12/13 years old. Life's priorities have always put imperatives ahead of this dream. It's not just a question of means but of priorities (I'm waiting for a Tesla in a few days... but it's the family car and we can't do everything at the same time). I've probably seen all the reports in the world on the Porsche 928, in English as well as in French (I'm French), but I've never seen a story that touched me so much because of the sincerity of the message. It's not only about a car, but also about a part of your own childhood, your memories. Things said simply and from the heart. I have never even had the opportunity to sit in a 928 let alone drive one. I just know that I hope I don't end my life without one in my garage. And my only certainty then is that it will never leave my house after having taken up residence on the walls of my childhood bedroom for so many years, on simple posters. I wish you all the best with your 928, it moved me a lot to see this video. I continue on my side to pursue the dream. If one day it comes true, I will certainly have a little thought for this report. And even if we don't know each other, I wish you the best. Christophe
Hi Christophe. Thank you for your kind words. I will be sure to share them with Darrin. I am very grateful you enjoyed the video. I hope that you too will achieve your dreams, and when you do, you come share them with all of us. Wish you the best.
I share your passion. It took me 5 years to find my 87 and I've had her for 29 years now . At times they can be demanding mistresses but when everything's working as it should it rewards like no other.
Hi Gordon. It looks like you have your own astonishing story! Maintaining her for nearly 30 years is truly a commitment. What is it about the 928 for you?
😃 Demanding mistresses. More like a demanding husband.🙄 Btw, I had a 1987 Porsche 928, in mid 1993, until my X totaled it drunk driving. I had just turned 28 years old.
I think the flip up headlight design came from the Lamborghini Miura. Just a beautiful car. To me it always look like it came straight out of a Stanley Kubrick film. Still looks fresh and modern today.
I had to wait 36 years to get my 928 that was my first and last porsche. I've had it 37 years which is now half my life. it's an eclipse, this will never happen again. I know that Porsche owners are not mathematically challenged, but for those of you who are I'm 74 years old. And I still love my Porsche 928. I came to the conclusion that if I can always get in and out of my Porsche nimbley that I will be forever young. so far that seems to be true.👍😎
I like this guy and feel similarly. I had different interests, had three 911s, life took over, then when I put my head up again, I'd "lost the bug." Then...it came back -- hard -- and I hunted for and got, similarly, through the Rennlist 928 forum, a beautifully-sorted 89 S4. I had an 89 C4, 96 C4 and an 01 911TT and I treat this car far more reverently. That TT was like an appliance -- a great one, but still -- uninvolving. I am so much more attentive to the S4, check cold oil and coolant levels etc before I even dare start it up. Always scanning the dash during drives to check oil temp and pressure levels. The 911s were like set it and forget it -- and I loved them all. 928s are weird. That's fine with me
Great video! To me this is by far my favorite Porsche nothing could compare to the looks & styling. I can’t decide between 1980 corvette or a 928 for my dream classic purchase 🤷♂️
When I was 13 years old I was nearly knocked down by a beautiful turquoise Porsche 928 on a sunny Sunday morning in early 1979 whilst delivering newspapers in Manchester Northern England. The 928 looked like a space ship, a jaw dropping sight compared to the vast majority of grey hum drum cars of that era. I was unhurt, my bike got damaged on the kerb but I didn’t care because I saw the car that God drove. The experience stayed with me all my life - owner of a jet black 928 S4 (2002-2015)
@@RealRidez Thanks a lot, the 928 S4 was hands down the greatest car I ever owned. I’ve owned gutsy performance cars like Saab and BMW in the 1990s and they simply paled by comparison. The 928 wasn’t a conventional car owning driving exercise, on reflection after 13 years and only 100,000 km it was a great life changing experience, and Im happy and proud I lived my boyhood dream of owning a 928. I sold it to a wealthy Scottish collector, after losing my job and hitting a rough patch back in 2015. At least he had the means to maintain and keep it running in excellent form to this day. Sometimes you just have to let the things you love go on their way to continue living and be loved by others 🙂
So funny I had one I drove the wheels off of it. S4. Problem is they are 80 percent trashed cause you can drive two 911s for the cost of keeping the 928 on the road. 2nd many can't work on it. This car has features I bet you haven't found yet. Like the little panel on the passenger side kick panel you can unplug the fuse so you can tank some 87 octane incase you run out of fuel somewhere. . 928 is one of the sweetest cars . You can pinch wires just pulling the cluster out.. only reason I know this is the car I learned how to work on. Only one guy I would trust working on this bad boy if you can't yourself. He is in Atlanta. He is the 928 God. European classics 👌 🙌 this car is also very fast end speed is insane for the time they were built. I got my 928 for 3600 bucks had 86000 miles not rips back side window leather was perfect.. I only bought it cause I could work on it.
I saw 928s and always thought they looked cool when they flipped up those lights on the autobahn to make others move over and loved that beautiful rear end with the scalloped out rear tailghts when they passed by when I was stationed in the army in Germany in the mid 80s. Finally got a chance to get my dream guards red tan interior 928s with the subtle front and rear spoilers that I always thought were understated and tasteful. Bought my 1984 928s from the original owner's son after he had a stroke and could no longer drive it. It had under 60k miles on it in 2015. I have put 15k miles on it the last 7 yrs. All of them chocolate miles on beautiful weekend days. Too much reverence to waste it in commuter traffic and risk it getting damaged or wrecked. What makes it more special to me than any other car on earth is that it got me to my mom's funeral in Feb 2016 right after valentine's day. By all rights I should have missed the funeral but this car got me there and for that I will always be eternally grateful. And I got there in a car that is red the same color as a valentine for my mom that I loved more than anyone in my life. Every time I look at this red car I can't help but think of getting to her funeral the day after valentine's day and I give thanks to the Lord that I was able to be there for her as she was for me all those years. I have gone through rough times since then but have held onto this car through thick and thin.
I've allways loved the 928. Like you, I noticed them before I was a teenager. They are so special, the design, the amazing sounding engine, all the tech innovations and how well balanced they made the car. Almost bought one in 2001, but, I realized it would be irresponsible of me to think I could daily one due to the cost of maintenance and my limited mechanical knowledge being much younger back then.
I really wanted a 911 but couldn't afford one because of the price increase so I ended up with a 928 5-speed manual and it's a great car, really fun to drive :-)
@@RealRidez 1980 928s Euro, but it has a 1985 manual gearbox which is supposed to be better when it comes to the syncros. The brakes are also upgraded to the later brakes I think, the upgrades was done by one of the previous owners.
I've had a 924 turbo, a dozen 911s, a 912, Caynenne, 2 Macans, have a 718 Spyder on order and a new 911. I have a mint '89 928 GT. The coolest Porsche I've ever had. But the 912 has lots of people stop to talk to me about it. Even at stop signs and stop lights.
Very nice! The 912 has such a cool, classic look to it. Must feel good being behind the wheel! Good luck with your new rides on order. Thanks for checking out the video and dropping a comment. 🙏
The 924, 944 I would buy anytime, even without turbos and slow as hell. They handled amazingly well and are timeless classics. But the 928, the goddess, one of my favirote cars since I was a kid
Fantastic video. As a late-Gen-X'er, I can relate to everything you said. I'm casually looking for a 5-spd 928. I've been collecting cars from the 80's and 90's. I have a 1989 240SX turbo-swapped, a 1994 C4 Corvette 6-spd, and a 1995 M3. Looking to add a Station and 928 to the collection.
Great video as always!!And yes, never give up on your dreams! This is proof that sooner or later they will become true. Thank you Real Ridez and thank you Daren for the great story you shared with us all! 👏👏👏👏
Congrats on your 928. My first car was a '84 928 way back in 1986 thanks to my mom and pop. I'll always have a place in my heart for that car with so many great memories.
Omg! Im wondering where do you go from there; owning a dream car of that era, in that era at a young age. I knew a few rich kids who got expensive things on a platter from parents without trying and they didn’t turn out well, failing spectacularly in life. At least you sound like you really enjoyed and appreciated gifts that would be a lifelong dream for many folks to accomplish.
Great story. Love the car. The 928 and /or the 911 is my dream car. But at 51 years old, it’s unlikely I will ever have one. But, enjoy your dream and congrats.
I fell in love with the 928 in 1978 when it appeared on the cover of Road and Track. It stayed with me for years. I finally saw one for the first time in 1991. That was somewhat of a religious experience. I finally bought a 86.5 in 2007. Truly a remarkable car.
I too have always loved the 928 since I was a kid! It’s not my favorite sports car of all time (that honor would probably go to the Z32 300ZX) but it’s definitely in my top-five, if not higher. I’ve just always loved it more than the 911 (though I also love the 911) because it is so different and cool, even to this day. Man it would be awesome if Porsche resurrected the 928 similar to what Ford did with the GT back in 2005! I’d buy one in a second (as long as they didn’t turn it into some stupid EV)!
Great taste! #agree that it would be awesome if Porsche resurrected the 928. Time is running out before we only see EV's and hybrids ⏱️ Here's hoping someone at Porsche sees the vision soon!
I loved the 928 from the first year it was introduced in 1978 to the last year of it's production. Would drool riding pass the Porsche dealership when I was young. Porsche back then had a outstanding line, 928, 911, 944 and each car had it's own character.
I worked at Porsche of Naples 2005 I remember some really nice ones being traded in for the 2000 just unreal how much they went up ! My first car was 1989 944 5 speed the car had 89,000 on it every thing worked what a fun car I brok the drive shaft and had to sell it !
Back in the 80's my then girlfriends older brother had one. I got to ride shotgun and fell for the sheer bold design and futurism I could not really handle. Ever since that I always wanter one and finally 2013 bought my 1989 S4. I will stay with this until i kick the bucket. My son can then deside what to do about it .
Beautiful looks. The automatic gearbox is a power killer in this series... if I took this car I would replace it with a dogleg gearbox immediately. The schematic diagram would have been useful to me a long time ago when I had a 928
The manual transmission in the early cars was very delicate. They got better in the later cars. But the Mercedes-Benz built automatic is truly bulletproof and suits the car very well. To each his own.
I've heard that you can fine tune the automatic transmission quite easily to be much more responsible. Check this guy's channel, lots of 928 content. ua-cam.com/video/-ehDAZXVi_Y/v-deo.html
Very cool video about a very cool looking car and a very happy and proud owner ❤ if i ever can affort a nice one i buy it immediately. The new Porsches dont have that feeling any more when we had in the 70s 80s and 90s..... When they were special. Today its all the same and hybrid 😭 give me that V8 🙏❤️
I would not be surprised if Porsche is looking for some new blood for their line and re-invents this model. They should just keep it as is and it will sell.
always loved these cars, almost bought one a few times but sadly things didn't work out, and or I was outbid. of course I had to go looking for a manual, but wasn't meant to be so I got a challenger again.
Being outbid always feels like a blow. I don’t blame you for wanting a manual. If you’re in the States, manuals are hard to find. Glad you found a good car at the end. We covered a newer Challenger R/T Scat Pack, it was a fun time! Thanks for watching!

I know that Porsche owners are not mathematically challenged, but for those of you who are I'm 74 years old. And I still love my Porsche 928. I came to the conclusion that if I can always get in and out of my Porsche nimbley that I will be forever young. so far that seems to be true.👍😎
Incidentally it's a 1981 Porsche 928 automatic that I bought in June of 1986.
Eterna juventud
That's fine with me
Thanks for watching and sharing your story, Gordon. Glad to have Porsche fans as yourself engaged with our content. Truly appreciate your support.
Great video! To me this is by far my favorite Porsche nothing could compare to the looks & styling. I can’t decide between 1980 corvette or a 928 for my dream classic purchase 🤷♂️
Thank you! 🙏 The 928 is definitely a head turner, so is the 80’s Corvette. No matter what you choose, it sounds like you’ll have a great car!
Sorry about the bad driver! Pretty amazing story! Glad you landed yourself a 928. I wish you many happy miles and smiles!
Thanks for watching and for sharing your story! Glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck with your 928. I hope you enjoy our other videos as well!
picking up a 1991 S4 this week.....
Thank you for watching and sharing your story 🙏🙏 so glad you enjoyed the video!

Awesome video Darren and a great story 👍👍
Thank you Andy! I hope you enjoy our other stories!
I really wanted a 911 but couldn't afford one because of the price increase so I ended up with a 928 5-speed manual and it's a great car, really fun to drive :-)
Sounds like a great compromise! What year is your 928?
@@RealRidez 1980 928s Euro, but it has a 1985 manual gearbox which is supposed to be better when it comes to the syncros.
The brakes are also upgraded to the later brakes I think, the upgrades was done by one of the previous owners.
Sounds amazing. Have an IG?

Thanks! Just gave a follow.
I have a crush on the 928 since my childhood too, and recently got me a 928 from 1979. Love Darren's story, can relate to it!
Thanks for sharing your story Darren. You've inspired me to make the leap to purchase my first sportscar (a Porsche 928S).
@@RealRidez - Right on. Porsche has a plant in Ukraine that was closed at the end of March which is the biggest cause of delays with the 911s.
The 924, 944 I would buy anytime, even without turbos and slow as hell. They handled amazingly well and are timeless classics. But the 928, the goddess, one of my favirote cars since I was a kid
Thanks for watching and sharing the love for the 928!
Thank you, Andy! Sounds like you have an amazing collection! Thanks for sharing!
Def a work of art
Great video as always!!And yes, never give up on your dreams! This is proof that sooner or later they will become true. Thank you Real Ridez and thank you Daren for the great story you shared with us all!
👏👏👏👏
Thank you, Andreea! Never give up on your dreams!
Congrats on your 928. My first car was a '84 928 way back in 1986 thanks to my mom and pop. I'll always have a place in my heart for that car with so many great memories.
Amazing first car! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
I love this 928 and a beautiful Car
Couldn't have said it better, Jerriel!
Beautiful car but another great episode showing the side people don't normally see. A lot of great things to take away from this one!
Thanks buddy! Compliments from a fellow creator always means a lot. Looking forward to future episodes from Motor Drive!
Great story, great car, great video! Well done!
Thanks my man! Appreciate introducing us to Darren and for all your support over the years. 🙏
And by the way those GT wheels look absolutely perfect for the black car. Cup wheels are equally nice but I wouldn't change those to anything.
💯💯💯 couldn’t agree more!
@@RealRidezThey are. Read my recent post
Modified Porsche 928 releasing 8, and the price is $500,000 🤯 Btw, the headlamps on these Nardone are so very ugly.
Great story ,I have a 928s 1985 310 hp euro in Nz:)
Thanks for watching! Congratulations on your ‘85. Many miles and happy smiles 😁
Really cool story. Congrats bro.
Thank you for your support to the channel 🙏🙏🙏
Good For You. My 1980s Dream Car. When I Win Big Lottery I'm Gonna Get a 928, Too.
...just a car that looks good to me. so this is a car it very much moves me.
Definitely a car that looks good standing still 💯
Great story, beautiful video.
Thank you, Y.T.! ✊
Definitely a car to hold on to. Wishing you many happy smiles and miles!
❤😊
Beautiful looks. The automatic gearbox is a power killer in this series... if I took this car I would replace it with a dogleg gearbox immediately. The schematic diagram would have been useful to me a long time ago when I had a 928
Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy this and other videos on the channel!
The Porsche "928S" was 1 of my Dream cars growing up, the only car that I'd wish for more is the 1995 Dodge "Viper"!!!
I adore it too, and would certainly have one if I didn’t love the XJ-S just a teensy bit more.
Thanks for doing this car
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Support like yours really helps this channel grow. 🙏
I drive my 85 and 87 around and people always stop me and think they are new models and want to know what it is. Timeless design
Couldn’t agree more! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
My favorite car ever is the 928. There is no substitute baby! 😄
I would not be surprised if Porsche is looking for some new blood for their line and re-invents this model. They should just keep it as is and it will sell.
💯agree. Such a beautiful car, even with today’s standards.
always loved these cars, almost bought one a few times but sadly things didn't work out, and or I was outbid. of course I had to go looking for a manual, but wasn't meant to be so I got a challenger again.
Being outbid always feels like a blow. I don’t blame you for wanting a manual. If you’re in the States, manuals are hard to find. Glad you found a good car at the end. We covered a newer Challenger R/T Scat Pack, it was a fun time! Thanks for watching!
@@RealRidez factory ordered mine, I’m an hour away from the Brampton plant as well but didn’t get a chance to see it being built due to covid.
IMHO the 928 is the most gorgeous car ever made, just me,
I believe you’ll find many like minded motorheads in your corner. 😉

That is my fav year!
Would you recommend this car for a "tall person" that’s around 6’4 ft. tall?
Not an expert, but I do recall reading an article that the 928 can seat someone up to 6’5 comfortably. Hope this helps!
