"Don't let fear keep you from unlocking things and having new experiences with your voice, and embracing possibility as you make mistakes" Some of the best advice I've ever heard
You can. If you record a metal album then go on tour for a month screaming every other day for two hours pushing through the pain, without slowly building technique and stamina before But probably not by trying stuff and taking a break when it feels uncomfortable.
Generally it requires a lot of repetition of bad technique to do that. Your vocal apparatus is fairly resilient and heals with rest (and sometimes anti-inflammatories depending on the injury), but it's like any other body part in that it can get overuse/repetition injuries. If you continue to practice poor technique, then yeah, you may lose it for good.
Only if you overdo bad things. I did a really dumb method to get some gritty vocals two days in a row. My voice was out for a week, falsetto and cord closure on false cord screams were... Not good for that week. So I gave it a rest. Voice came back and I went from a C#5 to an E5 now.
Great advice. I'm going through exactly the process you describe and I'm quite worried whether I'm doing it right. The fear of damaging one's voice is real but you have to find out what you can do with your voice.
After attempting to learn how to false cord scream my mixed voice range has become very scratchy, weak and breathy. After realizing this I’ve taken it very easy on my voice the past few weeks just doing warm ups and singing within my baritone range, which feels fine, however it feels as if I’ve now lost that mixed range part of my voice. Kinda scared since I finally just began to sing again after mostly recovering from long term diagnosed Muscle Tension Dysphonia. 🙁
@@chrisliepe Yes I’ve been seeing a speech therapist bi-weekly and doing recommended exercises. She told me to incorporate singing, but maybe I got too excited. I just hope I didn’t overdo it with the false cord practice…
Chris, I love you. I was also afraid to do something wrong with my voice, but I'm starting to understand that I can not let fear deprive me from what I truly want to do
That's once of the grater tip I ever learned. I've hurt my voice few times, but it tought by it how not to do it, and I was able to find the right way to develop my voice. Listen to him, he's the voice of wisdom ^^
That's so encouraging. Thank you so much! A lot of artists have damaged their voices, but they didn't stop at all and learned to get it right. Things happen and fear is quite limiting.
Here, here! Well said! There are particularly well loved singers of great renown whose voices went through dodgy patches. Everybody talks about them singing too hard, or using the wrong technique, but those who have payed attention to interviews, and the timelines of careers, will have noticed that most dodgy patches seem to come after periods of professional inactivity, and are also frequently associated with alcohol/substance abuse. The worst thing you can do for your voice as a singer, is to not sing.
When you're first learning you're definitely gonna cause your voice some (hopefully minor) damage, just make sure you're trying new approaches and taking breaks when you start to feel strain.
Inhaling constantly wrecked my voice for AGES. I lost so much range from both ends. You can achieve the same sound without inhaling. Sure, you can get higher inhales, but it isn't worth it.
@@chrisliepe That is the thing. There was no moderation. The inhale screams just sounded a lot more powerful and I could go lower or higher with little effort. This is why it is dangerous, because it becomes a crutch. Doing hour to two hour shows every weekend for a few years...yeah. I had to quit the band and have only now just got my voice back to how it was years later. This is why I say that it is better to just learn how to exhale scream.
Look here! Mike put the icing on the cake right here! I really miss this guy! He was an artist! We will never see what he had next for us. Rest easy Michael Jackson. I really loved you. Sincerely.
Went to a friend's house told him I'll be the singer never sang before homie said the only bad part was when I stop 🤙 don't be shy I left everthing behind with no expectations felt great.
the only time that a technique actually messed someone up was chris barnes. he was screaming before official technique was made, so you could easily notice his voice deteriorate. also smoking :/
Real talk dude like anyone can be the one to find a better way to do a technique. Starting out techniques had to be created and perfected by somehow. And for inhale screams? Dude I've been doing those since I was 14 and I'm 28 and they sound just as demonic as they did if not more than when i started. Honestly i just learned to think of it as a hiccup where you assign certain areas to clench at different levels. And my high inhales can go full banshee shriek. As far as those specifically? Ive got all sorts of tricks. But most importantly? Your mind is your limit.
Don't sing like Liam Gallagher cause the way he sings he puts more pressure on his throat, Although I don't know if that's true due to him having a comeback vocally come 2017 and forward.
well i can give you an example: Matt Heafy of Trivium lost his voice from screaming in a manner that was overly taxing. instead of giving up on screaming entirely, he learned a better way to achieve the sound live without overworking his voice. he took a break from scream vocals but then he eventually brought it back no big deal

I was told by my vocal coach that you actually can damage your voice so hard it becomes irreparable.

And frankly, if you’re starting, you might fuck up. It won’t be the end of the world. You’ll recover. Just take it easy for awhile.
Exactly. It’s the only way to learn
Thank you” had hard time speaking an speech class since I can remember, and always trying to better my speaking

I love your encouraging videos! Thank you!
Somehow I needed this today xD

Agreed. So many people say not to do breathy singing, for example, but it's safe if done correctly and without discomfort.

MTD recovery can be a long road! Are you engaged in any speech therapy?

Totally agree with you Chris, the wrong technique will always "feel" wrong, like biometric feedback, but fear is a creativity killer
That's some really good advice practice makes perfect!
Amen. We all have a right to go the distance. 🙏🏽

Thank you Chris. I think the same for my vocal students, too !!
Thanku indeed...
You rock Chris !!

Y’all really scared of damaging your voice??
It’s like a game for me 💀💀
Moderation is key! Budgeting! Subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
This is SO inspiring
That’s right. That’s how I’ve been approaching it.
any advice on how to expand your range down Chris? coming from a baritone that has expanded up a lot but not a lot down

Moderation :) Inhales are like hard liquor. Easy does it... A little is enough :)

Corey Taylor's 'Iowa'.
True or false, I'd rather use my growl singing technique in a moderate way since it's of secondary importance for me.
Who is the singer you are referring to, and what is the technique? I am blind, so I do not know what is on the screen.
Just singers in general. I’m making a generalization that people often use to keep people from vocal freedom
i like this kool dude

Well Adele and Bon Jovi are 2 singers that have had problems too
@@AtomizedSound bon jovi is 60. if I make it through multiple world tours before I start losing steam at that age id consider it a good run
Chris Liepe, the ultimate jeans n T-shirt kinda guy.
All things in moderation:)
but how do you "Increase the size of your budget"?
What about practicing with bad techniques (?)
Then you will damage your voice if you don’t listen to your body
what are the songs you use called like at 1:17:54

What singer? Show em then.

Speaking of which, any lingering covid effects? Or are you 100%?
I get videos liek that all over my feed and it’s always the same Channel, so annoying
So... Biden just needs more practice?
yes :)
