I am a vinyl buff, and I think yes. It’s over. Even I switched to CDs because of their cheaper price. Vinyl just got too expensive, to me, at least. I’ve been away from any vinyl purchases for almost 6 months, and will keep myself without buying them unless the prices come down.

IMO.I know long winded, but it's true for me, and maybe not you, that's OK. I purchased vinyl in the early 70s, then 8 track, cassettes, DAT, CD, DVD-A, SACD, all the way down the line. VINYL MAY INDEED HAVE THE BEST AUDIO EXPERIENCE, THE BEST. However, you need a descent playback system to bring out the best in all these formats, especially vinyl. At one time you could buy vinyl at every dept store and every toy store, it's about all the working man's kid could afford. Do you know how many times I and everyone else returned vinyl for quality issues? It was common to get warped, skips, scratches, etc. When CD came out, we rejoiced. Finally, a guaranteed clean copy, no noise, no skips, it was heaven. NOW, the folks that did not experience this, experienced the vinyl propaganda. Rightfully so, AAA vinyl is awesome. But, the majority of folks are older, they went through these phases, they collected or can afford descent audio systems. When these folks buy $125 Mofi records, $150 UHQR, they don't play them on $200 vintage turntables with worn out stylus. They do buy 20-to-40-dollar records, which IS expensive compared to $5 used CDs which sound clean, or streaming everything in HD quality for #15 a month. (Which by the way, can sound awesome too, depends on the recording, engineering, the mix, the mastering, the production as a whole.) THATS THE REALIZATION, same realization back in 1985. That vinyl is great, when you have a capable stereo system, and you listen to pristine AAA albums made by audiophile labels that really care, and you're really into it. Otherwise, Vinyl it is simple to much hassle; it always was too much hassle. Think about it.....I bet most of us here have spent more money on cleaning records than most of the new commers have invested into an entire system. Once these newbies buy enough crappy quality new records, realize used records suck for the most part, and have to deal with everything that goes with the requirements of playback, they realize it sucks for the majority/ the masses...just like the 70s. A minority will always love it, because that's their hobby, thank goodness we have a few labels that will always strive to regurgitate the same old albums we loved when we were kids. Eventually, the vinyl thing will just return to the niche, and a minority will carry the torch, and enjoy the cult. No hate, no blame, just an opinion, peace out.

The problem is the record labels are so greedy and the cost of a new record here in Canada, and everywhere else, has gone insane. It’s very common where, after taxes, you’re paying between $50-$60 CAD a record.
So do I buy records as often as 5 years ago? Not at all. And it’s not that I don’t want to, it’s because I’m not rich and can afford everything I would like to have. So nowadays I’m extremely picky with what records I will buy.

No not really, but it's the largest audio chain store in Australia, its called JBHifi.
It used to be a store that focused a lot more on music and had the most alternative and wider selection than say Sanity or HMV, they now also sell air fryers, fans, TVs, microwaves and hair dryers etc and Sanity and HMV no longer exists.
So if you want to buy new vinyl in a physical store they're basically it, they're in most big shopping malls in every state, there's not many family owned record stores and a lot don't sell new stuff, my local here on the south east coast of Queensland only stocks used vinyl and CDs.
He will accept sealed new stuff as a trade but he doesn't order anything new to stock.
In the same store I saw Whitney Houstons greatest hits with a $119 price tag on it, just a 2lp standard greatest hits comp.

It was the last new album stocked at our local Walmart before CD's and vinyl got phased out of Canadian Walmart's altogether. I myself, a lifelong vinyl collector since the 1970's have definitely have pulled back on new vinyl purchases. You can plug in your headphones 🎧 , drink beer 🍻 and dance 🕺 🎶 the night away via the remote control. You can't do that with snap crackle and pop jumping vinyl and albums. As a store owner. The collecting of vinyl records was never meant for mainstream buying. Collecting Vinyl is a nitch market for special people who collect this format. What is changing is very simple, the economy. Also the price is based off of demand, condition and rarity when it comes to used vinyl and sometimes even the new releases. As far as the new vinyl, record stores price them according to the recommended MRSP which usually carrry a profit of about 8.00. I have been in this business on and off over 50 years, the average buyer does not know what goes on behind the scene of the record business. There's more involved besides price. I have seen records go out of print for a year are so, when it does, these records quickly becomes rare until they are back in print. Also there are sometimes first, second and third pressings of these releases. As a result, all of them look the same and mybe priced according to the pressings. Remember your local record stores can't purchase wholesale like the big boxes. Most new releases cost us an average of 26.00.

    As an older “audiophile who
likes vinyl “….yes, back in the day ..I’d buy an album just out of curiosity.
Once you get into vinyl..then you get into the quality of the pressing .
Then at the end you’re going to want to explore what higher quality playback sounds like ..
At that point you’ve moved beyond the Crosley and start moving into mid tier and even higher end systems and its associated gear ⚙️.

Im sure many folks might laugh at me, but, yeah - i got out of vinyl in the early 90s. Went to CD, then audiophile CDs. I’ve invested instead in quality sound system with SACD/ Ladder DAC, Tube Pre-amp… and the sounds lasts forever.
However, classic music (jazz, blues, folk, classical) has a fantastic draw for me - - purchased through vendors like Mosaic Records, i get to listen to brilliant music on CD.. and such the like.
These titles will never come to vinyl. (And i think perhaps there may be a new way of High RES optical discs to release some of the Vinyl classics that have yet to be released on digital in the future.
Good listening to my vinyl friends who enjoy that way. (But i am surely glad I’m a SACD guy when Michael Jackson One Step is $150 and the same title on SACD, cut from the same master - is only $29.99… and so it has been with a lot of amazing new re-releases.)

So, the market is overstocked with certain releases. As a result, the value of vinyl (as a whole) is tempered down, due to strategic decisions. I own a SACD player and love to buy mofi and analogue productions sacd's. They are excellent and less expensive compared to their 45rpm vinyl counterparts. For classical collectors like me who only buy vinyl from the golden age (60s to 80s) it is certainly not over. The price of new vinyl taking into account inflation is not much more than 70s prices when an LP was around £5. But why spend £30+ on a DG original source LP that can be had for £4 on ebay in EX condition. For marginally better sound quality? No.

  • @JJ-qs9hu
    @JJ-qs9hu Місяць тому

The prices aren't high based on wages. If you hipsters were alive during the 80s, you would know that the prices are right on track with minimum wage.
The other reason vinyl sales may be down is because nothing great has been released the last 18 months.
The only prices that are out of hand are used prices. I refuse to pay $100 or more, even $50 for a used record. I go to local record stores and they have increased all their used prices. Albums that were .99 cents to 2.99 are now 5.99 to 12.99 for titles that have been sitting in their stores for years. Nobody is looking for Streisand albums , and a used copy of Michael Jacksons Thriller shouldn't be $19.99 when that album is so plentiful.
Even newer albums that people have sold back are only $5 cheaper than a new copy. Record sellers, mom and pop ships are gonna put themselves out of business. They give pennies on the dollar and mark stuff up 2000% .
I pretty much have 99% of everything I want so although my buying didn't decrease this year, I'm only buying new from Amazon when I find deals. I'm not gonna give my money to small businesses that want to gouge their customers.

Out of over 100 albums purchased this year, 25 were new music from artists I loved. And a few newer artists. I'd say 2 were good and the others were underwhelming. I listen to pop, rock and country and Eminem . Basically each album had 1 great song and everything else were fillers and it's proven based on how well the songs performed globally. LPs are a luxury item today, not a mainstream format for new popular music. Most of my thousands of records are jazz and pop/rock from the analog era, before the 1990s. (Many of them are originals that I either bought when they were new or I picked up in used record stores.) Since the late 1980s, almost everything has been recorded digitally and sequenced for CD release, so while it may be fun to have vinyl copies, that's not really the format in which those albums were intended to be heard. I remember 1987 as the year CDs became the dominant delivery system -- when the Beatles' albums were digitally remastered and released on CD for the first time. In the last few years, those same albums have been remastered for vinyl. The pendulum will never stop swinging...

Today, you can have "on demand" access to the same music in a variety of formats, some of them virtually for free, like here on UA-cam or other streaming platforms. But CDs are also becoming rarer and more expensive. So, yes, collecting physical media of any kind is a luxury for those who can afford it.
