Thank you for taking your time to explain this. I am new to LP-world and since I am very interested in 1960's records - I was searching for a best way to protect them as much as I can, because records like these - when they are gone - they are gone for good - no replacements of any kind. This video was very helpful.

Thank you! Nice clear and concise presentation (unlike so many other fusspots, I'm not bothered by some background noise in a short video). It's been surprisingly difficult to figure out which inner sleeve is my best bet without spending a bunch more money. The diskeeper 1.5 mm round bottom looks good to me.

Thank you for this highly informative video. FYI: The only pink bags I've ever seen are 4 mil anti-static, non-corrosive virgin polyethylene film. These are the same bags that sensitive electronics and computer components are shipped in. Theoretically, that bag would be superior for eliminating static. I'm not sure if it would scratch records or not, but if polyethylene is preferred, as with your '2.0 Diskeeper Inner', then those bags should be amazing for inner sleeves (not to mention they're about $0.16 a piece).
That bag you held up looks a bit flimsy for 4 Mil, so it may not be the aforementioned one above, but I wanted to share the knowledge in case it comes in handy. Thank you again for the great videos. Keep it up!

I received a few packs of the Ultimate Audiophile Sleeves a while back so I could try them out...they are FANTASTIC. I've been using the poly-lined paper sleeves and the paper fibers were driving me crazy. I cleaned some records as well as some new purchases and popped into the Ultimate's and I'm 100% happy with them. Nice an slick, but stiff enough to hold shape. Not a paper fiber to be found. I will be swapping out every record in my collection with these.

When I take a record in and out of a sleeve, I "bow" the sleeve while inserting and removing the record! That prevents a lot! But like you said, it doesn't prevent dirt from getting in! And the record has to eventually touch the sleeve when you put it away! But "bowing" helps keep the record from scraping against it!

The PVC outer sleeves stay clear no matter how old they are. Only thing that changes, they harden and may crack at the corners due to the escape of the weakeners. The outer sleeves that are slightly cloudy and soft are made of polyethelene, the only plastic suitable for protecting the outer sleeves. You might consider keeping the PVC sleeves if lined inner sleeves are used. Migration of softeners into the PVC is blocked by polyethelene-lined inner sleeves. (records are made of specially formulated PVC, but it depends what formula is used. Some PVC might not resemble the other chemically, that fact might explain the one PVC is rather immune for softener migration than the other). These migrations are also known under another name: free radicals. Remember the gases escaping from particle board? It resembles the effects softeners cause escaping from soft PVC. Difference is old particle board fumes might damage our health. Despite all that, both are so called free radicals.

Your Ultimate Sleeeves are fantastic! I would recommend one improvement. The bottom of the sleeves are a bit flimsy. Maybe add a 1/4 inch or so reinforcement at the bottom of the sleeve? That would really be great protection.

  • @EddieJazzFan
    @EddieJazzFan 10 років тому +4

Yeah those low density poly sleeves on old albums actually oozes a plastic film onto the record. But I've used the high density poly eth lined paper sleeves for years and never had trouble with the paper coming unglued from poly eth material. The straight high density poly eth sleeves without the paper feel too flimsy IMHO. Those round bottom sleeves do look great for the old classical Lps that have the tight fit like the really early 50s Columbia albums. Thanks for the informative vid.

I love the HDPE 2.0 Sleeve City inners. I started using them on all my records a few months ago. What I do is insert them into the current paper inner sleeves if they have any artwork or lyrics on them. Good results, low static & the best part is it doesn't cause any light scratches like many other sleeves. I hate the round bottom ones though, have to say. One thing about the really old fashioned rice paper sleeves, that I sadly just replaced with the HDPE 2.0, they work well on older records from the 50's - 70's, and the smell of old vinyl on rice paper is just amazing. What are the best outer sleeves you would suggest for gatefold covers?

I have bought new records with the pink hue on the inner sleeves. When I would put my fingers inside the sleeve I would end up with residue on them. I don't understand why a pressing plant would use something like that. I throw stuff like that away and put the record in a Mobile Fidelity sleeve which I really like. The Mobile Fidelity sleeves look a lot like the rice paper sleeves you showed. Acoustic sounds also uses a sleeve like that for their records. I wonder if they are made by the same company.

  • @Sleevemonger

A little Yes, but mostly No. At 4:25 he uses a sleeve that can easily fold back on itself at the corners when inserted into the LP sleeve, thereby risking vinyl scuffing. Best to use a harder outer sleeve with a rice paper interior, which won't adhere to the vinyl like a poly interior.

  • @dustoff499

I'm not one to play my albums to the extent paper sleeves become an issue. As long as they are acid free and of good quality my collection is happy. In my experience those fancy poly sleeves are difficult to incert into the outer sleeve.

So of this is overkill. If your collection is near mint high dollar collector records sure but if you collect for the fun of it and have lots of commons, and crate digging rescues a decent paper or poly inner sleeve is all you need. That and handle your records with care.

I would like to go a bit further than that and WARN for the PVC jacket protection sleeves. The softeners in the PCV tend to attack the PVC vinyl records are made of. This process takes years so any newbees should be well aware of the danger. So never use PVC outer sleeves and use polyethylene sleeves instead. These sleeves come in several thicknesses, the thicker ones are less transparent but do their job just as good as the thinner ones. A record that has been attacked by softeners coming from PVC outer sleeves have a duller surface and there will be excessive surface noise. Needless to say these records are damaged beyond repair, cleaning won't help either. This warning goes for all PVC based vinyl records, styrene is immune for PVC softeners. Styrene was used by some USA based record factories for 7 inch 45rpm records. These 7inches were injection molded instead of pressed.

You can also store the record in the jacket with the opening facing "up"! Facing the opening of the sleeve with the opening of the jacket, can easily cause your LP's to fall out of the jacket! That's bad! And one thing you said that I disagree with, and is common sense! DO NOT PUT TWO RECORDS IN THE SAME SLEEVE! It will scar the hell out of your record's! That is NOT a smart thing to do!

my collection is worth more than your car do you not service your car. All the old paper sleeves contain acid that turns paper yellow and leeches onto vinyl thus all need replacing. A costly venture when you have 5,000 albums at .20 each is a thousand bucks. I did spend 700.00 for a VPI record cleaner as well preserved, CLEAN vinyl is the only thing that sounds GREAT. It is "all about the music" (quote from "Music Direct").
